I want to pull my son out of school a day early to start our vacation. Crazy that I am so flustered about it.

However, he is in junior high, and everything that I have read in the school rules, etc. does not say anything about absentee in school due to vacation or personal reasons.

I have a meeting on Tuesday when I plan on mentioning it to the staff at the meeting to see what they have to say about it. And afterward plan on emailing the teachers that he has to ask if they would please send any work he would miss home with him.

I am hoping that there will be no tests or quizzes (what is the chance of those happening the last day of school before Spring Break?). And I am hoping that the teachers would all be excited for him and tell him to have a great trip and not to worry about missing anything (wishful thinking, huh?).

If I let him miss that day of school, we can leave at noon to overnight in the hotel we are staying at before we fly out the next morning, missing all of the traffic. If he stays in school that day, we will hit ALL of the evening rush hour FRIDAY traffic.

Please tell me not to feel bad about him missing one day. His grades are good and he has no missing work.

Of course, its up to you...but I would never pull my child out of school just to miss "traffic". Different story if you're concerned about making a flight that night, but if all you're doing is going to a hotel? Leave after rush hour.

Correct. The airport is 3 hours away, and our flight leaves at 7:30am.

Leaving after rush hour would work, but in all honesty, we don't want to.

How about a middle ground: Have him go to school, but pick him up early at noon or 1PM and THEN go... Here if you pick them up within the last two hours of school, it doesn't count as an absence. That way, your son is not absent, he only misses one or two classes and you can still beat the traffic of rush hour.

This is what I would do, too. In our district, it's rare for teachers to give the work ahead of time, so don't count on that. Dd13 hates to miss school.

That will probably work. I am still going to see what the staff says at the meeting.

In the past, his teacher in elementary school has told him to have fun, as have all of the staff, and even the principal. We have always left a day early to get to the hotel and nobody has had an issue. That is why I had planned it again to happen that way.

However, with him being in junior high, I never considered the fact that they may not be so understanding. I am hoping they will be though.

One day? It is just one day. I wouldn't sweat it. And I taught junior high!!!!! If he has a test that day, as most teachers will close a unit before a break so everything the kids learned for it isn't forgotten on break, just ask that he take the day before. Other than that, I HIGHLY doubt your son will be missing a lot of work, talking from experience.

I don't think one day is that big a deal even for an older child although I do try to avoid it. At my DD13's school, tests on the last day before breaks are quite common as it's not a good day to present new material but a great day to finish something up.

If it's causing you this much stress and you don't plan on leaving until noon, why not pick him up on your way out of town. This would be our choice as my DD13 wouldn't want to start or end a vacation with the thought of makeup work or put off tests.

I would never worry about 1 day! My kids missed 7 days for our trip. They are only in 2nd and 4th, but my niece and nephew also missed 7 days for the same trip. They are in 6th and 10th grades. No problems, and all 4 of the kids are honor roll students.

If it's a 3 hour drive, I would pick him up at lunchtime. That would give him most of the day in school but still help you to avoid most of the traffic. You can spend the morning packing and loading the car and be set to go at noon.
