My daughter was just in the show in December.
We arrived early int he morning. You go to the AM Idol building and was around back by the commissary. There will be signs and people there. You choose a song and they take you in to audition.
You will then be told if you will sing again for the "Producer". If so you will sing again and choose your song for the show.
My daughter was chosen for the first show. She had to return one hour and 15 minutes before showtime. Our family got early admission and had to be there 30 min early.
That said...It took up all morning! Dad stayed for auditions, the other 2 and I went to the animation station.
My daughter is 18, but if you are under 18, a guardian must stay with you the entire time. So they have to be backstage, and there for the full time before.
My daughter did not win so we were finished.
Several years ago, she did the show. She won her show and then repeated the whole process again at the 7 pm show.
Quite honestly, I was relieved she lost this time. The first time was fun and exciting, but that was the majority of our day. We told her if she did it, this trip, we would come to the shows but were not going to hang out with her while she did hair and makeup and mic checks and practice.
Have fun!
