Tell me I won't feel like a burden, food allergies

I would not feel like a burden. I don't have allergies but the servers always ask the first night if anyone has food allergies. Also the wonderful part of cruising with extended family is that everyone can do their own thing but still have some together time. We have cruised with groups of 15 and 19 and both times, we stated up front, while still in the booking/planning stages, that we do not all have to hold hands the entire cruise and decide each activity by committee decision. Different ages enjoy different activities and it's ok to just say, "No thanks, I'd like to do something else."

It wasn't planned, but what ended up happening is that we'd all do different things each day and all meet in the MDR. It's all good. Enjoy your cruise and don't feel guilty.

Thank you to everyone who responded to this post! I'm not the OP but I'll be cruising next year with a newly diagnosed food allergy that I did not have the last time my family cruised, and this thread, especially Starwind's super detailed information, is so helpful!

A few other comments that I don't see posted (coming from a multi-allergy family). Every time my family has cruised on DCL, we are amazed at how many of the special allergy plates go through the waiter station. So, it might be the most normal you ever feel!! The tables without the allergy meal covers may be in the minority LOL!

The only negative is having to "always" eat in a slow sit down restaurant for every meal. Since our dinner waiters are always so great, we actually ask which restaurant they are working during the following day when placing our pre-orders. We try to follow them if possible. It's comforting to see a familiar face, and someone who already knows your specifics. This actually came in handy the one time we had an issue. My daughter (who was still young and in the "touchy" faze) must have touched an allergen on the table or window at the breakfast buffet - and got hives on her arm. Well, our waiter saw our distress, called ahead to medical and was so kind and helpful to the rest of the family. Thankfully all was OK. That night at dinner he informed us that they had cleaned & sanitized our entire table and surrounding wall area - and they did the same each night. He really took care of my family! (We have avoided the buffet if possible, too.)
