I recently moved from Florida to Virginia about 3 months ago. I have been actively looking for a job for the past 2 months, I use the normal ways- newspapers, craigslist, career builder, monster, indeed, snag a job, and I have registered with 3 employment agencies in the area. I have applied for numerous jobs, but have only been on 2 interviews- one I turned down, and one that they still haven't hired anyone for yet.

My question is that if you too are looking for employment, what ways are you doing so? I am trying to seek out all opportunities available and hoping that someone out there can inform me of other avenues I'm not aware of. If you have a great site, or a tip that could help me or anyone out there who is seeking employment, please share. Thanks!! :)

I got my job through a Temp agency about 22 years ago. I was working one temp job that was ending and a new opening came up that was temp to perm. They liked me and hired me and I worked my 10 weeks as temp and them became permanent. I've changed positions within the company three times over the years.

Good luck to you in your search!

Have your registered with a Head Hunter? Checked listings in trade journals for your field? Attended professional conferences in your field that might have position postings?

I did a LOT of networking. I specialized in a specific software that was a necessity in lots of markets. Sometimes people are your best resource.

Working for a temp agency.

If you have a college degree, getting involved with your college alumni network.

Looking at the career center links on local business web sites.

Going in person to businesses and asking if they are hiring.

Temp Agency is a good place to get some work while you are looking. Also Join LinkedIn and Network as much as possible.

try networking on linkedin.

Volunteer. This will help you meet people, give you something local to add to your resume and get you out into the community. If it's possible, choose volunteer work that relates to the kind of work or organization you are looking for.

what kind of work are you looking for?

I got my current job by responding to an ad in a professional journal.

depends on the type of job you are looking for. If you are looking for a retail job, go inside every store in the local shopping center or mall and either fill out an application at the kiosk or ask for the manager and get an application. If you are looking for something a little more professional, call your local chamber of commerce and find out if they have some sort of networking event going on in your area then go to it.

Great thoughts and suggestions, I am going to try to call the chamber of commerce tomorrow and I will check out the linked in site.

I am a Dental Assistant, I am also a Medical Biller/Coder. I guess I always thought that it would be so much easier to find a job in a larger cit, but now I think maybe that just means there are more people also looking for jobs too.

Thanks for all the responses, keep em coming!!

Welcome to the big VA. I live in Newport News.

Williamsburg is a HUGE tourist place in summer months, it is still a little too early there to start for that industry. Busch Gardens/ Water Country still early to start hiring. However in winter months are crazy slow, except near holidays and Grand Illumination.

As other people suggested, temp agency. there is one right there in Williamsburg on way to Busch Gardens. Protemps

There are new stores going up in Williamsburg, so retail would be hiring. Some places don't advertise that they are hiring, so you really have to put yourself out there.

Medical field? There is Sentara Hospital there in Williamsburg and they have a website of their job listings.

College of William and Mary has a website of their job listings and it isn't just teaching.

You can search jobs with the state: Virginia.gov

Go to Williamsburg public schools website, they have job listings, even down here where i live in Newport News.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

Oh, I was off the chart on my listings. Ok, Medical Biller/ Coder. 3 Major hospitals in the area of Williamsburg and Newport News. All have their own websites.
Sentara.com, Riversideonline.com, BonSecours.com

Dental Assistant: do you have local yellowpages? if not, google to find dentists around you. There are quite a few.

Good luck. still try the temp agency, you never know what that door can open.

Hey thanks, I really appreciate it, I don't even have a phone book for the area, and don't really know how to go about getting one, so most of my info comes from the internet. I live right by BG and WC so I will try to check out the Protemps place. I have applied at Sentara and over your way at Mary Immaculate. I will definitely check out some of the things you've suggested. Thanks a bunch!

I did all these things and it still took me 15 months to find a job after I was laid off. What finally worked -- networking. A friend knew of an opening and recommended me for the job.

This is exactly what I am afraid of. So many things are hinging on me finding employment right now, it is quite hard not feeling like a failure. It seems like every thing out of my husband's mouth is Well, when you get a job ______ will happen, We can do ____________ when you get a job, or When you start working you'll be more ______________.

I am still trying every day and nothing is happening. but I'm still trying, lol!

Thanks for the help guys, I really do appreciate it more than you all know.
