tell me how southwest boarding works

i think it's coming from puerto rico to orlando to philly. i'm trying so hard to change flights, but would cost over $700 for different time that day. had i known orignially it was a connecting flight i would have never booked it.

ok someone help me out here. i may have discovered something that will help me.

my flight # is 440 mco to phl
just found san juan to phl stop at mco and 2 flight #'s 281 and 440 -- does that mean the people from san juan have to get off plane and into new plane how does boarding work for that? i don't want to spend $614 to change flight times

Yes, they would have to get off. They will have a separate boarding pass at MCO, they get in line based on their boarding # for that flight. How do you know the plane you are getting in Orlando is coming from San Juan?

i knew it was a plane coming from another area cause it was 3 #'s rather than 4 and i'm lil crazy to know info so i searched each airport (i started bottom up so didn't take long) and found it was from san juan to mco to phl

If the flight is originating somewhere else it would have the same flight number. So it doesn't sound like your plane is coming in from San Juan.

As for how boarding numbers work.

1) Anyone who is already on the plane from the previous flight will stay on the plane. If they have to change planes for an unplanned reason but were supposed to stay on the plane they will still board first (although I think after the medical preboards in that case)

2) medical preboards and children 5-11 that are traveling as unaccompanied minors board next. They are the ones that need extra time and they want them towards the front.

3) Business select passengers A1-A15 board next. It used to be that this was mostly empty on many flights but they recently started selling these spots for $40 at the airport if they were empty still so now they are almost guaranteed to be full.

4) Anyone that is A list or Alist perferred will have the next boarding numbers as long as they had their Rapid reward number on the flight before the 36 hour mark.

5) Next is anyone that got EBCI until they run out of A boarding group spots. For your group this is the earliest you will be able to board.

6) Family boarding between A and B groups. This is for children under 4. How many people they let on with the child varies based on the day but could be as little as one adult per child. Also any A listers that didn't have their info in on time board here.

7) The rest of the people with EBCI board next.

8) Finally all those that didnt get EBCI board in the order they checked in at the 24 hour mark.

With a group of 9 I would be prepared that:
1) You will not be able to find enough space for 9 at the front of the plane. Most of the time the medical preboards and anyone on the plane before you take the front at least the aisle and window seats so you won't find full rows. I have A list preferred and on most of my flights the first fully empty row when I get on is 7-8 rows back. A lister's make this worse because most of us are business travelers traveling alone so we tend to all sit one person per row.
2) You probably will be able to get 2 people together at the front of the plane if sitting in front is more important to some then sitting with the whole group. They would have the aisle or window and middle seat next to the business person that already sat down.
3) You probably could get everyone together since you have EBCI, but that will be towards the back of the plane if your looking for 3 rows all in close proximity.

You probably want to figure out sub groups of 3 or less, as people sitting directly in front, behind, or across from you are of limited value during the flight while the seatbelt signs are lit.

You with the lap baby (?) might want to share a row with grand parents. If you board during family boarding you could try and take a middle seat. Most folks that don't know you won't want to sit near a lap baby, so when the grandparents board there will be a place for them.

great news, the 2pm flight i've been trying to get finally went cheaper -- still not as cheap as I purchased my return flight, but enough for me to change it! so I don't have to deal with my flight being a connecting one! woohoo!
