Tell me everything about Lake George

My family is going to go up for a visit and I am in the planning stage. We will go in the summer (2010 - this year we are going to WDW!). I know it will be DH and I....DS (15) and possibly DD (19) and/or DS' friend (15) and maybe DD BF.

I'm looking to either rent a home for the week or get some sort of suite with a minimum of two bedrooms. We love doing everything.

I've researched the websites. I'm looking for hotel recommendations or sites to rent homes. I'm looking for recommendations on restaurants and things not to miss.

I'm also interested in anything you know about Fort William Henry Resort. It seems to have alot that I am interested in....indoor and outdoor pool....right in town....in room safe....suites....fitness center....spa.....restaurants.

In other words I'll take any info I can get!

Don't know of any places that meet your two room minimum requirement, but I do know Lake George. We use to go up there every summer. We'd stay in Bolton Landing which is up Rte. 9N, on the west side of the lake. We stayed at a motel on the beach called the Chelka Lodge which does have some housekeeping units. You can check them out if you want. They do have a website: http://www.chelkalodge.com. We like Bolton Landing, because the village is too congested and too touristy.

Some restaurants to check out are The Algonquin and the Logjam. There are also some dinner cruises on the lake that are wonderful.

If you have visited all of the web sites, then you already know pretty much all that there is to know..

I can't give you any personal info regarding accomodations in that area because I'm so close to there, I've never had the need to spend the night..

Just know that it can be very, very busy during the tourist months.. There is one "main drag" right through the center of town that can get very, very congested.. They just wrapped up "Americade" over there this past weekend - 10 days of a huge motorcycle rally..

Everything you could possibly want to do is either right there or within a very short driving distance.. The Fort William Henry Resort would be a good choice - in terms of being able to walk around town (where the shops and restaurants are) - but that also means having to deal with the constant noise..

You will find that a lot of young people hang out in Lake George and it can get quite rowdy at times - especially Friday night through Sunday night..

Still - if you have never been, it's something worth doing at least once.. You will either love it - or hate it - LOL.. I always go over there right after Labor Day.. It's nice and quiet - shops are having their sales - and the traffic is practically non-existent (on the week days)..

You might want to try doing a search on tripadvisor.com for personal experiences with the various accomodations..

You only live once, so give it a shot!

Wow we use to stay at Hulets Landing, I think it was across the lake from where you staid.
One thing about Lake George. It is cold cold water until mid August. When I say cold I mean frigid. It is so refreshing but you have to be a polar bear to stay in it for a long periiod of time before August.

If you think you might be interested in the resort, I can answer questions for you. There is no pool or hot tub, but two meals a day are included in the price, as well as waterfront activities, including sailing.

It is in Diamond Point which is north of Lake George Village. We like the resort so much that we rarely venture in to the village anymore - maybe for lunch or to the Great Escape (Six Flags) - but that's about it. The village is crowded and noisy, but there is a lot to do.

There is some outlet shopping which we like to do on a rainy day or girls' morning out.

Hi all....checking in to read the replies.....Thanks for the info. Sorry, Lake George New York. I had no idea there were lakes named George anywhere else.

I looked at the canoeisland resort and it looks absolutely wonderful. The only problem is that one of our requirements is a pool. DH will not go into the lake water for any reason unless he falls in while on a boat. I think he's .... welll.....since it's my DH I can say it....NUTS. Anyway...we need the pool unless we go without him which is always a possibility....ok ok just kidding.

Can someone comment on just how noisy and conjusted it really gets in the village? I really want to be there because I want the kids to be able to go without driving....15 year olds mostly.

I am going to check into these because it may be nice to have a home vs. two room suite....my only issue will be location.
