We are flying to Orlando Sanford. Trying to save $$ on baggage. I was thinking a book cat for personal item. How strict are they? I know they are a budget are line. I am flying out of Lexington another 1st

We always take a backpack as our personal item (school size, not hiking size).
The stipulation for personal item is that it must fit under the seat in front of you, so you can fit a laptop bag, fairly generous backpack or even a small dufflebag

We either take a backpack or we fight over my under the seat bag. We have used the bag below several times on Allegiant with no problem.

When I made my ressie the lady told me personal item would be a book bag, but has to fit under the seat. I really like the bag Sammielynn posted, that's sweet.
They have dimensions on their web site.

Your check bag has smaller dimensions and only 40 lbs. instead of two overhead bin bags, if you can fit the items in one check bag that is a savings.

I told dd we were going Allegiant and we were "wearing" 5 pairs of undies, three shorts, capris and pair of slacks with 5 T-shirts and a jacket, lol.

Hope you don't have to buy an extra seat each - that would eat up your savings pretty quickly!!!
