Tell me about your Kindle

I love, love, love my kindle. I'm also a proud kindle-enabler and try to share the love whenever asked. :)

For me it has been a money saver. DH and I also share an account which is really convienant. I used to buy books in hardback and even with discounts we usually spent about $16 for a new release. I haven't spent more than $9.99 on any kindle book purchase and those are I can count on one hand. I have 'bought' dozens of free or very cheap books, although my downfall has been when the first book is free and then I like the author so much I buy the rest of the books in the series. :lmao:

I admittedly stalk the free and bargain threads over on the kindleboards, people are great about posting their finds. Also, if you go to amazon, put -domain into the search function in the kindle store and all of their current (and sometimes past) free offerings usually show up. You can also check the movers and shakers section in the kindle store and very often there's free books there too.

I recently bought 2 hardback books by my favorite authors because I have all of their other books. I'm really regretting the decision and I think for the most part I'm done buying hardbacks. I have 273 books on my kindle and for a photo comparison:

It's not for everyone, but us, it's been a great invention! My hands hurt just looking at those books!

I adore my Kindle! (Actually, I have the Kindle 2.)

I love almost everything about it:

I can carry multiple books on vacation, to the skate rink, anywhere -- and they take up no more space than a small magazine. I love that at Bible Study I can carry a King James Bible, an NIV Bible, and a historical commentary all in my purse.
Book storage has always been a problem in my house; I have never in my entire life owned enough bookshelves. Now I'm storing oodles of books in one tiny spot.
I never lose my place in a book (even if I'm reading multiple books at once).
I can look up the definition of a word effortlessly (without even leaving my text). I'm finding that while in the past I might've just skipped over a word, figuring that I basically knew what it meant, I now check the actual definition, and I'm learning nuances of words that I didn't know before -- and I have a degree in English lit!
I can read a chapter of a book before I commit to buying.
My aging eyes love the ability to change font size.
My books cannot be lost; even if I damage/lose the Kindle itself, my purchases are stored on Amazon.com, and one phone call could install them to a newly purchased Kindle -- of course, I hope never to use that feature!
I like to lie on my back and read, and the Kindle is lightweight and easy to hold in one hand; it doesn't try to fall shut when you're near the front or back of the book.
It's easy to read in sunlight.
The Kindle can do a few things other than hold books; for example, it can also hold archived information that you email to it. I scanned our passports and saved them into my Kindle, giving me an electronic copy to take on our upcoming cruise.
You can also subscribe to a limited number of magazines and newspapers. This is sensible in an ecological sense because you're not wasting paper.
I love that I can buy a book anywhere, anytime, and it'll be in my hands in less than a minute. You have to set up an account with Amazon, and anytime you buy a new book, it automatically goes to your credit card -- and you get an email stating that you've bought it.

Though I love it, I must admit a few negatives:
I am NOT saving money on books. I am reading more books, and I am buying more books -- as opposed to trading with friends or borrowing from the library. (However, I'm not hounding my husband to buy me bookcases anymore, so maybe that evens out.) Everyone I know who has a Kindle says the same thing; it is absolutely NOT a money-saver.
Having said that: A pleasant surprise was the number of FREE books that Amazon offers (try around the first of the month - they tend to pop up then). I have a backlog of free books waiting for me. Some of these are classics (Pride & Prejudice, Dracula), but others are written by new authors who are trying to attract a fan base. Many of them are things I wouldn't have chosen, but I have enjoyed tremendously.
Not all books that I want are available in Kindle format; I expect this will change as time goes on.
Some books I don't think I want in Kindle format; for example, I like paper cookbooks. And though I downloaded a Bible, I find it rather slow to flip from chapter/verse to chapter/verse at church. My daughter downloaded a Manga cartoon book, and it was disappointing; the wording is small, and its size cannot be changed.
One issue that I haven't solved yet is reading by the pool/beach, something I love to do. When I'm near the water, I simply pop my Kindle into a ziplock bag, and it's safe from splashes . . . but I can't leave it lying on a chair while I go for a dip. After all, if someone steals a cheap paperback, I won't be too upset, but if someone steals my Kindle, I would be devestated.
They advertise that bestsellers are $9.99 -- the truth is that MOST bestsellers are $9.99. Some books are more; for example, I just bought the newest Diane Galbadon book Echo in the Bone, and it was something like $16. Why? Because she knows that we will pay it. Also, I just bought the Lord of the Rings triology, which isn't a NEW bestseller and might not belong in this conversation at all, and it cost something like $10.99. I didn't think that was bad though, considering that it is a set of THREE books.

Comments that're neither positive nor negative, but that you might want to consider:
As soon as you buy a Kindle, you should immediately add some protection to keep it in top condition. I have a plastic film over the screen to protect scratches to that all-important part, a sticker from DecalGirl to prevent scratches to the body (and I like that it's pretty purple/blue instead of plain white), and a clear rubber-condom-type cover which makes the whole thing more "grippy" and makes me feel that I'm less likely to drop it. I keep the whole thing in a quilted, zippered bag. Maybe I'm paranoid, but this thing was expensive, and I don't want to damage it.
I use my Kindle almost every day, and my daughters often read Kindle-format books too. My battery lasts almost two weeks between charges -- IF the WhisperNet is turned OFF. With the internet feature turned on, it lasts about three days. The moral, of course, is that you should always keep your internet OFF unless you're actively buying a book. There's no purpose in draining your battery over and over.
Though you can buy books through the Kindle iteself, I prefer to buy on the computer. It's faster to switch from screen to screen, and you can see the full-color covers and recommendations for you. When you buy on the computer, the book is automatically sent to your Kindle. The next time you turn on the Kindle, you need to turn on the WhisperNet, and in less than a minute your new purchase is downloaded.

Go ahead and buy the Kindle -- you will love it.

What they said plus:

-I Love, LOVE my Kindle 2.
-I spend more now on books but I am also reading more.
-I am reading the better books (I usually read chick lit light stuff) that are free and ones suggested by my smarter friends now that they found out I have a Kindle.
-I can't say enough how much I loved bringing one Kindle to Hawaii isntead of bringing the six books I read while there.

Two downsides: although you can read it in very bright sunlight, it is not back-lit. You can't read it in bed without a night-light or a bedside light or a book light. Also, Harry Potter is not yet available in Kindle form. But I am waiting and waiting!

I have installed on my Kindle the plastic protective sheet over the screen, and I have it in a pink leather case that opens and holds like a book.

But I did have to laugh with MrsPete: When I was at the beach or the pool in Hawaii, I DID take it out of the case and put it in a ziplock bag so that water and sand wouldn't get into it.

Also, you have to get used to being the coolest person around. Everyone stopped me at either the pool or the beach to ask me about how I liked my Kindle. I was happy to share.

I got my Kindle 2 for Mother's Day and I LOVE it! I really didn't think I would like it but I was able to "test drive" when my aunt was visiting and I fell in love.

It is so great on trips and when you are out and about and have a wait. It hardly takes up any room and if you finish a book you can just download another one. I also love that you can get a sample chapter before you buy a book. This has saved me a lot of money because if I don't like that chapter then I don't buy the book. Also, if I hear or read about a book that sounds good I will download the sample chapter so I can check it out later. :thumbsup2

My only problem is keeping my DH from swiping it. :scared:

I LOVE my Kindle, it is the new larger one. I am blanking out if it is called Kindle 2. I think it is Kindle DX.

I take it everywhere, and also bought a nice leather cover for it from Oberon. And the skin from decalgirl.

What I love is no books hanging around in boxes, waiting to be donated somewhere..... I like picking a new series from a new author, and being able to read them all in order, easily.....

I cannot even describe how much I love the darn thing....

Where do you guys get accessories for you Kindle? I don't have a case or a skin for mine. Maybe I need to add those to my Christmas list!

I have not had a Kindle for very long. My reading material tends to be mystery, non fiction, historical fiction. I am amazed at how many free books (or low cost) can be found on Amazon. I check "bestersellers" every couple of days. There are two new free books tonight that weren't there yesterday,.
I am cheap, I won't pay $10 very often for a book (in fact, I've never done it). I just check Amazon just like checking email......it doesn't take very long.

I especially appreciate the ability to carry many books, since I travel and hate carrying alot of books.

Hi everyone, OP here. I just wanted to thank you all for your in depth responses - just what I was looking for! I have the iPod Touch with the Kindle app loaded. I do enjoy it, but of course the battery life on the ipod is nothing like the Kindle and the screen is way to small to read for any length of time. I am considering asking for this as my Christmas present - I do love to read and usually do the bulk of my reading in the summer. I haven't been able to read too much lately and feel I'm really missing it. I don't have any room for more books in this house and have boxes to be donated to the library. Does anyone know if they will be coming out with the Kindle 3? With my luck, as soon as I get the Kindle 2, a new version will be released.:sad2: Thanks again!

Also, Harry Potter is not yet available in Kindle form.
Shhhh . . . don't tell anyone, but I have all six Harry Potter books on my Kindle. They're bootleg copies from ebay, so they're not as nice as purchased-from-Amazon books. They're not searchable, and they have some spacing issues, but those are some of my FAVORITE books, and I wanted whatever version was available for Kindle NOW. When Amazon finally gets them, I'll buy the real thing.

JK Rowling is saying that she doesn't like the Kindle format and she will not allow her books to be published electronically, but I remember back when she said she wouldn't allow her books to be made into movies. I figure they'll be available eventually.

They already did. It's called the Kindle DX, and it's much larger and it boasts more than twice the storage capacity. It's also much, much more expensive.

Honestly, I think I like the Kindle 2 better (maybe I'd better keep thinking that since it's what I have!) because it fits into my purse.

I use my Kindle CONSTANTLY, and my husband already said he'd buy me an upgrade when they come out with a COLOR screen. I don't know that that'll be anytime soon.

Yes, I know about the DX, I was thinking more along the lines of a Kindle 3.

Just want to thank you all for sharing your thoughts and information. I am going to purchase the Kindle 2 for my husband for Christmas. He loves to read and has some vision problems, so I felt this would work well for him. A close friend has loaned my DH the first Kindle to try it out. He really likes it and is reading every spare minute. :) Everyone sharing their comments on the Kindle 2 helped me feel like this is really what I want. Thank you.

If someone could please tell me where to buy the plastic cover for the screen and a good case I would really appreciate it.

On Amazon, of course! Be careful on the case you buy. One type has a small pocket to place a book light into, and other types of covers from the same manufacturer do not have the pocket. Their light only seems to work with the cover with the light pocket. I found just one plastic screen on Amazon and it works really well.

I just looked and the manufacturer is M-Edge. Their customer service is great. Just email them and they will explain which covers have the light pockets and which do not.

Mine doesn't as I didn't care for the bulk of a bigger case.

Good to know! I know she prefers writing out in long form by hand and is very much against ebooks, but I am very much against putting any more books on my shelves so I shall look for the way you got them! :thumbsup2

At kindleboards.com, they have a whole forum dedicated to accessories. There's also a review section where people post what they like/dislike about the cover or other accessory they've ordered, which I've found very helpful. I know there was a problem with some amazon covers a while back, am not sure if that's been resolved or not. I've got a decalgirl.com skin on mine and an oberon cover, while DH has a M-edge cover and has been very happy. I'm sure you'll be able to find something you like. :goodvibes

Thank you so very much! :goodvibes I will research this holiday weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Thanks to you guys for your reviews, even though I didn't ask for them. Thank you OP for asking this. For now I downloaded to the computer for a trial and see how I like it. It's not the same thing, but it'll give me an idea. I'm thinking of asking one for Mother's Day next year. Then I'll have it for the summer reading marathon.

I think I like the looks of the Kindle 2. The DX is too big for me.

It's so good to see so many new Kindle converts around ! I have almost my entire office converted to the Kindle. I hope everyone that receives one this Christmas enjoys it !
