I know it will be hot, hot, hot (I like it that way) but what are the chances for hurricane warnings? Is it very rainy?

HOT and humid. Rains EVERY afternoon for 20 minutes to 2 hours or so. Hurricanes are possible, but not that common. :)

We went in August last year and were suprised how much rain there was. We usually go at the beginning of June and it rains hard most afternoons but only lasts for about 20 minutes.

We had 3 days last August that it rained for 2+ hours. It's nice because it clears out the crowds somewhat, but since the outdoor rides were closed during the rain, the indoor rides got very busy.

Maybe our week was an exception last year, but compared to June, there was significantly more rain in August.

We must have gotten lucky in 2000 when we went in mid August - the weather was hot and humid, but I don't remember it ever raining to an extent that the rides were shut down. I can only hope we will be that lucky when we go in July:p
Bring LOTS of sunscreen and a mister bottle, or fan - or both. I loved our fan/mister bottle, and never got sun burned once. Have a great trip:Pinkbounc

HOT HOT HOT!!! I live in Miami and cannot take the heat at the theme parks during the Summer. It rains every day and not just rains, STORMS! It's too hot even on Memorial day weekend, which we have done. Huge crowds and heat do not mix! Especially with the whiny kids. Problem is that summertime is the only time a lot of people can plan a family vacation. But just be aware that it's hurricane season and extremely hot and humid. Sorry to be a bummer, but it's the truth:(

We live in Tampa. Orlando is very hot in August. It averages between 90 and 93 degrees during the day. It really does not cool off much past 80 degrees at night either! What is really bad is the humidity. It rains almost every afternoon for about 30 minutes to an hour. This rain is usually in the form of thunderstorms. They come up fast and sometimes have lots of wind and lightning. When they are done you have about 30 minutes of cool temps (75-80) before the humidity kicks back in. There are not usually a lot of hurricanes in August.

Now, we live here so by August we are pretty used to it by August. We do not let it stop us from getting out and riding our bikes, going to the beach, or going to Busch Gardens and WDW. However, we see people who are not used to the weather and they are Blizzard Beach --- ie MELTING in the Fla. sun.

Here are some tips to keep cool. Don't wear heavy cotton. It is not as cool as people think and it retains water. We try and wear as much nylon/polyester as possible. I know this sounds funny, but what I am talking about is the bathing suit type of material like Nike Dri-fit or Umbros shorts. Also, invest in some sandals like Tevas or Nike walking sandals. Keeping your feet cool is important. We dress our daughter (2) in little dresses and skirts to help keep her cool. Also, drink lots of water. Nothing is better in the heat that good ole H2O. Oh, try and stay out of the heat between 1 and 3pm. Plan lunch, indoor attractions, or sims in the pool. Oh, if you are not used to the sun, remember your sunscreen. Banana boat makes a great spray sunscreen that is not oily and is sweat and water resistant.

Enjoy your trip!

Quote "There are usually not a lot of hurricanes in August"......Hurricane Andrew was on August 24, 1992.....:(

We lost everything we owned (not looking for sympathy just stating a fact).

I appreciate the advice. I'll make sure we're prepared for some rain and plenty of heat & humidity - I love the humid weather - coming from the Northeast are summers are way too short! My husband on the other hand - will have to take it slow - he doesn't do that well in the humid weather. I'll make sure we stop and get plenty of H20. I envy you your great weather in the sunshine state! We very excited about our visit.

Poor Pooh - sorry to hear about your loss. Hurricane Andrew was tough.

We were in Disney last August in a tropical storm - interesting. We bought ponchos and danced between the raindrops. We stuck to Epcot and MGM during the especially bad moments.

There is some excellent advice in this post. My general advice - be at the parks when the open. No shirts with sleeves - sleeveless only. No pants - shorts only. Be back at your resort for lunch and rest. Resting in the heat is very important. You'll then be ready for more fun in the late afternoon. :D

Yes, starting over was extremely difficult. Now we really pay attention to the weather reports during hurricane season. My daughters really appreciate things a lot more now....thanks for the kinds words.

As far as the heat, I find that getting and always having a big cup of ice and just eating those cubes helps a lot too! Early a.m. as park opens is good advice. Evenings are humid but at least you don't have the sun beating down on your face. Between 11:00 and 2:00 is the hot time and then of course there is the storm time, so it's good to be inside for lunch or good time to see the rides or events that take more time....(movie @ France, any of the shows that are inside, Presidents @ MK)...that type of thing....The church in Norway is so cold you will never want to leave....it's a great great cool off place...don't miss it........Have a blast!:D

Hi,

We have gone to WDW in Aug before and will be there again this coming Aug. It is very hot. Not much rain. Just a daily afternoon thunder storm for 15/20mins. No hurricane issues either.

We spent 14 days at WDW last August and yes it is very hot and
humid and yes there were thunderstorms every day . I dont remember any of them being too bad though except for one. I got stuck in a major thunderstorm going to see my brother at the
Polynesian.I just dropped DD off at POR with my sis and for some reason the best bus to take was the one going to TTC,by the time I got on it the wind was knocking down trees and I was drenched. I was the only person on the bus with the driver and one trainer. When I told him were I was actually going he said there was no way he was going to have me walk in this storm to the Polynesian and dropped me off right in front of the Lobby. What a great guy he was!! Being from California I just don't see alot of thunderstorms and lightning bolts so I was fascinated with this. Maybe thats why they didn't bother me too much.:)

Make sure you have plenty of water (we used britta bottles) and its handy having misters to cool yourself down. We used misty mates which we woould fill with ice water in the morning and would last all day

We have gone four times, the last two weeks of August and have been very lucky. Out of all four trips, we only had a total of 1-1/2 of rain from all trips combined. It was mostly in the afternoon for short burst. Once it started just as we were returned to CBR for a swim. By the time we has our suits on, the sun was out. My favorite time of year to go.

We went in August 1999, I think the dates were like the 21st to the 27th. It didn't rain one time, the skies looked threatening several afternoons, and lightening closed the Dig Site pool once(we stayed at CSR) but it never did rain!

Now, regarding the heat....it's not really the heat that'll get ya, it's the humidity!!

Would I return that time of year? YES!

ONLY because it's late in August, and most schools in the southern states have started meaning the crowds are very tolerable!

Went to WDW in Aug of 75 and remember saying "never again" I am from CA and never new about humidity...
Well 2 years ago I went back in Aug.... Rained for hours, lots of lightening and they closed the water parks, Gave us a free rain out pass at Blizzard Beach. Never got to ride the rapid ride at Animal Kingdom because it kept closing, never got to ride a water mice either. Could only use the pools in the mornings because they seemed to close the pools every afternoon because of lightening. If you look closely you will see lots of lightening rods EVERWHERE. When it lightenings within 5 (?) miles all water rides and pools close for 30 minutes... So it can be hours before it reopens.. Also when it rains it doesn't really cool you off.... Well once again I said "never again" Give me Dec or April anyday.....
