We are 4 adults and 2 children thinking about getting a cabin at Fort Wilderness. Can you tell me about your experiences?

We loved staying there. There is 1 bedroom with 2 bunks and a double bed, a bathroom, a living room with a pull-down Murphy bed, and an adjoining kitche. The kitchen and living room are really almost like 1 big room with an island separating them. The transportation is time consuming, so it's best if you have a car. The pools aren't themed like at the other resorts. We have an autistic son, so it was nice to be able to have privacy without worrying if the neighbors could hear the loud kids.

It's in the woods, peaceful and relaxing.

Check allearsnet.com for pictures.
We really enjoyed our visit. The beds are pretty good, though only doubles. Storage was kind of strange. Lots of units to put stuff in, but no shelves inside the units, so not as efficient as they could be.
There are three or four drawers in a built in dresser in the bedroom, this dresser had a large TV on it. A large closet (no door), safe, a a large horizontal surface on the other side of the closet. Three windows in the bedroom. Two twin size bunks, an endtable with two drawers, and a double bed. Also a door to the porch here.

Bathroom was a good size. The shower head was wonderful (massaging type). Two shelves in the bathroom and a coat hook on the back of the door allowed us to keep our stuff off the counter. Also ample storage under the sink. Tons of VERY hot water!

Darkish hallway leading to the kitchen/living room. Thermostat here to make the cabin COLD!
The kitchen has ample cupboards, fully stocked. Also a good size pantry for groceries. Decent counter space, range, dishwasher, microwave, 2 coffee makers.

Table inside door, seats 6, 3 heavy side chairs and a bench. Short couch, two child chairs and two end tables. Also two cabinets, built in, flanking the murphy bed. These cabinets and the TV cabinet were empty, so you could use them for storage.

We were very happy here for the 8 days we spent

We had cabin 2501, which was steps from the pool and laundry and close to the bus stop.

We have stayed in the cabins twice and I really like them. The first trip we stayed for eight nights, 4 adults and 1 toddler - the second trip it was 4 adults, 1 child and a baby for 11 nights. The first trip we didn't feel cramped at all, there was plenty of space. By the ninth night of the second trip we were feeling a little bit smushed. We still had a wonderful time though. I agree about the storage, there really isn't enough room for luggage. The bathroom is plenty large enough, and the kitchen is great too. I loved the privacy, and I actually really liked the dark decor. It really made the cabin theme believable.

Have a great trip! :sunny:

I like the cabins, and think they offer more space than a regular hotel room. But if I had more than 2 adults for more than a couple of nights I'd probably choose 2 hotel rooms for privacy and the extra bathroom. But it depends on the ages and closeness of the group.

It's nice to have an outdoor place to hang out, though. You really don't get that at the values/moderates.

I'm also wondering about the cabins.
My sis is planning a trip w/ her 4 kids and would need 2 rooms elsewhere. Her DH doesn't like the "cabin idea", so I guess my question is Are the cabins cabiny or are they disney cabiny (if that make sense) Also how far to the pool and what type of quick restaurants nearby?
I don't think the storage thing will be an issue, as we were just on a 10 day cruise w/ them and they never unpacked-just piled things up!!! :earseek:

:rotfl: Mousekeeping comes daily (yes -- the famous towel animals may appear), the grill is magically scrubbed down nightly, and the AC is COLD!). I'm not a huge fan of hotels -- even four star (ya seen one mini-bar with circa 1998 M&Ms and $4 dollar water, ya seen 'em all).

The cabins are well appointed, quiet, and totally comfy for families. We are looking at a trip in January with at least 3 adults (and hopefully an additional adult, two kids, and a baby). With only the three of us, we'll have tons of room. With the additional four, we'll be down-right cozy but with the deck and eveything, it'll still be great!
Upside
you stock the fridge -- no scuzzy out of date M&Ms! (actually -- the kitchen is great. We always save a bunch of money by fixing some of our own food). It's peaceful and quiet. And the boat-ride to the monorail is a hoot.
Downside

  • Some folks rag on the resort busses -- personally, I never waited more than 20 minutes.

The FW cabins are ABSOLUTELY our favorite plave to stay @ WDW. Since this upcoming trip is a celebration gift for my DD, we seriously discussed Concierge-level at one of the deluxe facilities but ultimately, we decided
Naaah, we'd rather stay in a cabin at FW.

If extra bathroom space is an issue, you could request loop 2100 which backs up to camping loop 1100 and its comfort station (including laundry). There's even a path between the two loops.

We loved the cabin in our Christmas 2001 stay. Perhaps it's the early camping trips when that's the way we could do Disney, but my kids often still request Fort Wilderness!
