Hello!

We are traveling with a 5 year old and an 8 year old and are trying to decide if Star Tours would be too intense/scary for them. Can anyone tell me what type of ride it is and if my kids are likely to enjoy the ride or not?

Thanks for your help!

Our two girls were 5 and 6 on our last trip. Both were hesitant but ultimately loved it. Go for it!

I think Star Tours is more funny than intense/scary (admittedly I'm an adult, not a child). I would be cautious if either of your children (or you for that matter) are prone to visually induced motion sickness. I struggle with a lot of simulator rides and Star Tours is one of the worst for me.

Star Tours is awesome! It is one of my favorites and I ride it over and over. It is a simulator with a 3D movie; you get tilted and bounced around, but you're not actually going anywhere. You may see Darth Vader or Boba Fett on screen (they mix and match different segments, so you don't know what characters/destinations you're going to get), but you have R2-D2 and C-3PO on your side, so you know you are going to be OK! Seriously, that would be my reassurance about any concerns of "scariness" - R2 and 3PO are not going to let anything happen to you. R2 has everything under control. ;)

I have no experience with taking kids, but it really is a fun "adventure" type ride.

(ETA - Well, Boba's not actually on screen, his ship is, and he talks.)

Blast off on a thrilling tour of the Star Wars universe aboard a Starspeeder 1000. Voyage to amazing alien worlds — like Tatooine, Naboo or Hoth — and come face to face with the likes of Yoda, Princess Leia or even Darth Vader.

Featuring state-of-the-art technology—including a flight simulator, digital 3D video, Audio-Animatronics characters and “in cockpit” special effects and music—Star Tours: The Adventure Continues realistically immerses you in the Star Wars mythology for an unforgettable intergalactic adventure.

Pre-Boarding Hurry along the forest moon of Endor—home to rustic Ewok cottages and a towering AT-AT—and make your way through a sleek Rebel bunker to a bustling Star Tours spaceport. Inside, behold R2-D2 and C-3PO tinkering away on a Starspeeder 1000—your cosmic transportation vehicle—amid a throng of projection screens, glowing scanners and blinking droids.

Weave your way up a ramp past customs and baggage screening before picking up a pair of 3D flight glasses and continuing to your departure gate. Following instructions from an overhead monitor, board your interstellar space vehicle for a journey through the darkest reaches of the solar system.

Become a Hero of the Rebellion! As you prepare for lift-off, a series of mishaps unwittingly causes your starship to launch and C-3PO to take control. Suddenly, your space cruiser is intercepted by Empire forces. Fearing capture, C-3PO pilots your ship on an unpredictable flight that will rocket you to the farthest reaches of the galaxy and back!

Tour the Universe During your voyage, interact with many of the otherworldly characters and places made famous in the Star Wars saga.

Hold on tight as you navigate jagged desert rocks in a dusty pod race on Tatooine. Maneuver around menacing AT-ATs during a whirlwind battle on the icy planet of Hoth. Hyperspace to the watery planet of Naboo and avoid the clutches of a giant fish or retreat inside the dreaded Death Star to escape Darth Vader before doing battle with Boba Fett.

Will your starspeeder elude capture and safely transport you—and the rebel spy—safely back to the Alliance base? May the Force be with you.

If they make the height requirement and aren't afraid of a motion simulator, they should be fine. I would advise they know at least some of Star Wars before they board and for you to know that the sequence isn't carved in stone. I think there are 52 different sequences so you can't tell your kids, "this person will say this, and then that will happen, and then that will happen" as it changes with each ride.

Last year, we got the final segment with the droid crashing through the windshield. As the barrier in front of the screen went up, a small child near me asked his mom how they were going to fix the window :)

They should be fine. I was a ride scaredy cat as a child (cried through the whole queue for BTMRR...) and I always loved Star Tours.

I would just explain ahead of time that it's a room that moves while you watch a movie - it doesn't actually go anywhere, no big drops, no upsidedown, no high speeds, etc.

I agree with everyone else; it's not really scary. Our daughter has always liked it too. She rode it for the first time at 4 years.

I wouldn't consider it anywhere near scary. I would consider just SEEING and HEARING the Tower of Terror and the Alien scene in Great Movie Ride would be more scary for young kids. (My wife is not wanting my 3yr old to go on GMR just because of that one scene).

I wish my son would be able to grow 2 inches in the next two months so he CAN go on Star Tours .. I am sure he'd love it.

My daughter was not much of a thrill ride kid, but she absolutely loved Star Tours at age 5. I told her it would feel like she was going somewhere, but really we were just in a "room" that was standing still and bouncing around. That seemed to really work for her. Something about the fact that she wasn't actually in a vehicle that was on rails going at a high speed, like BTMRR which she hated, made her feel more secure and she absolutely loved it. We rode it several times that trip.

Star Tours was hands down DD's favorite attraction at age 5 on our last trip. I'm indifferent to it, but I imagine we'll be riding it several times on our upcoming trip.

My two older sons loved it, at the time they were 8 and 5. This year, my youngest is now tall enough to ride it and I am pretty sure he is going to love it!! My middle son was chosen as the Rebel Spy once and that was one of the highlights of the trip for him.
The motion may be a bit much for little ones but we never thought it was very aggressive.

My niece went on it with me when she was 5 and loved it! You get "tossed" around a bit, kind of like if you were driving down a very uneven road in the car. There's nothing that really jumps out and goes "BOO!", though. You basically just feel like you're flying very fast, while avoiding "objects". If they go on Splash Mountain, or Thunder Mountain Railroad, I imagine they would be fine with Star Tours.

If you know what D-Box is at your local movie theatre, it is the same experience but a lot more coordinated with what you are seeing.

My son loves it, and he is terrified of everything. Really.

I do want to reiterate the motion sickness issue, though. I get severe motion sickness, and take meclizine daily when traveling. Properly dosed, I can handle any coaster at Busch Gardens, but Star Tours STILL knocks me down. So, if the kids (or you!) get motion sickness, don't skip the dramamine (or whatever you use) thinking you won't be on a "roller coaster". FWIW, though, my son also gets motion sickness, but he's fine with meclizine. Maybe I'm just too old. :)

My 5 year old daughter loved it. She didn't know anything about Star Wars going in, and I know very little. It's definitely not necessary to know anything about the SW stories before you go in.
