Tell me about separate use years...

We will soon have 2 contracts, both at BLT, but separate use years (one March and one September). The September use year contract includes 150 points from 2015, has the full 160 for 2016, and then 160 per year going forward.

Will both contracts show up in one spot in my DVC account online?

What other headaches can I expect to encounter because we have 2 different use years? Afraid to screw this up, but it was a perfect fit for us, so I decided to just go with it and work with the use years as best I can.

What made it a perfect fit?

While the contracts can be listed under a single log-on, they will can only be used separately. There will be a drop-down box to select which contract to view and use.

You will have to track each UY separately, IMO not worth the price or size of the found contract. Can you do it, sure, live with it for a couple of years and modify your holdings later as necessary.

It will be as if you have two totally separate accounts, even though you will have a single log on.

2 different banking dead lines; so make sure you set alarms on your phone or something.

You will have to transfer points from one to the other should you want to combine them and use them at 7 months; which as Bill has pointed out in other places can be problematic.

I however, just bought a different UY as well. There were multiple reasons, but the big one is my first contract was a direct purchase from Disney who just gave me an april UY (and i did not know any better), and that was not a particularly good one, so I wanted a better one for my habits.

Also, I do not plan on combining them much, so I am not worried about the point transferring.

It was a loaded contract - which we were in need of, as we'd already stripped our first contract bare for about as far out as we could. Hence, the reason to add on.

The points number seemed good for us, and the price was right.

Got it! For our December trip, I'll have 15 points left over from our first contract and then the remainder will come from the new contract. So, I should be able to transfer the 15 points over to the new contract, and then I can make my reservations from that single account, correct?

Caution on transfers, DVC doesn't always know how to deal with them and they are difficult to track. You can't transfer online so you have to call. I think they are getting better as more members are added and more transfer.

Transfers retain their home resort, (doesn't matter in your case), and their UY. Transferred points can be banked but banked points can't be transferred. For a reservation, it has to fall within dates of both UY's for you to use the points from both contracts.

You've obviously made your choice and decision but for others reading, it's rarely worth it to save the relatively few dollars to get a separate UY for a better contract. That's double the case for the same home resort. The exceptions would be where having extra wait lists spots is important and/or if they each target trips during the year that are favorable, like a March/April trip and a Sept/Oct trip.

Thank you for the tips! The remaining 15 points are for the 2017 use year.

We have had two a very long time. Some points:

If currently purchasing both contracts, make sure that the two contracts are deeded to the same names and that Disney is informed by closing, through the broker or otherwise, that the same persons are purchasing the contracts and that you want both to show up in the same online account. Those are the initial steps needed to assure nothing gets screwed up and you end up with both contracts in the same online accounts.

For all essential purposes, the two memberships will be treated as if you were two different members. Each use year has its own banking date. You will receive separate annual budgets and annual dues statements and if you have automatic monthly withdrawal for your dues from your checking account, there will be two separate monthly withdrawals. The points in the two use years cannot be mixed to reserve any single night and thus if you want to use both use years for a single trip, you have to either transfer points from one use year to the other and then do the reservation, or instead book part of the trip with one use year, the other part with the other use year, and then contact MS and have the reservations linked so you will avoid having to change rooms. And note that if you do that transfer of points you will not be able to reserve online with any transfered points and instead will need to call MS, thus giving up the one hour online advantage if you are tryng to book something that can disappear quickly at the 11 or 7 month window. If instead you do the two separate reservations and then link, you have the different issue that each reservation will have its own arrival date for determining when you can reserve at 11 or 7 months out.

Each membership will be entitled to have two active wait lists at any given time, and you can purchase one time use points for each membership, meaning you can actually get up to 48 one time use points for a single trip when you are using both use years for one trip However, that only works if you follow the method of making two separate reservations rather than using a transfer of points for the trip, and do the one time use point purchases before attempting to link the reservations because once linked the reservations cannot be modified without MS first unlinking them.

Each membership gets to make one transfer of points per use year and thus you effectively have a two transfer per year right. Also, MS will usually let you do multiple transfers per year if they are done only between your two use years. If you go two times a year, and use only one use year per trip, you can avoid the risk of losing points due to a cancellation. You have until the end of the eighth month of the use year to bank points. If you schedule a trip to occur late in your use year and have to cancel, you face the risk of not being to bank the points if you are beyond the eighth month of your use year when you cancel. With two separate use years like March and September, you can use the September use year for a trip in January or February and the March use year for a trip in July or August and avoid that cancellation/inability-to-bank risk.

Overall, we have not had any real problems with two use years and it is not any huge additonal burden just to have to deal with two rather than one use year.

So helpful!! Thank you!

So - could I do the following?:

- In about 2 weeks, when the points from the new (Sept) contract should be ready to use, can I call MS, transfer the 15 points from the March contract to the Sept contract, and then, immediately after doing so, book at my home resort? It's past 11 months so pending availability of course. It would be 150 points from Sept 2015 UY, 160 points from Sept 2016 UY, and then the 15 transferred in from the March 2017 use year.

- Then - when the 7 month window opens up for the second half of our trip, can I use the remaining 30 points from the Sept 2016 UY, plus borrow some points from the Sept 2017 UY, to book a studio at another resort? Can I book this scenario online or do I have to wait the extra hour for MS?

As I understand it from the above, you intend a December 2016 trip. You currently have a March use year which has no March 2016 points and only 15 March 2017 points left. You are getting a contract with a Sep use year that has 150 Sep 2015 points and 160 Sep 2016 points.

If that is true you cannot do what you plan. Points transferred retain their own use year and cannot be borrowed after being transferred, and thus those 15 March 2017 points will be useless for a Dec 2016 trip if you transfer them to your Sep use year membership because you would have to borrow those transferred points to be able to use them for a Dec 2016 trip. In essence, the only way to use those March 2017 points for a Dec 2016 trip is to leave them in the March use year and borrow them to make a reservation in Dec 2016,

You have another issue that could arise. If those Sep 2015 points have not yet been banked, then the only way they will be usable for a Dec 2016 trip is to be banked by no later than April 2016, the banking deadline for those points.

As to your general questions about transferring points, you can do a transfer into your account and also a reservation using those transferred points in the same phone call; you just need to make sure you do the transfer first before the reservation.. You can make a reservation that actually uses transferred points from a different use year only by calling MS and not online. It is a sytem issue. Points transferred into your account from another use year do not show up online as being in your account, In other words, if your were to transfer March points into your Sep use year, you could not do a reservaiton online using your Sep use year and those transferred points because when you go to get points online to do the reservation, the transferred points will not be shown., Finally, for a Dec 2016 trip, you could borrow points from your Sep 2017 use year if needed.

Thank you!

So - can I just leave the 15 points from the March 2017 UY untouched and use them in 2017 (before the banking deadline) to book a 2017 or 2018 trip?

Then - when booking the second half of our trip, if I only use points from our September UY - 2016 and borrowing some from 2017 - this would be doable online, correct? Because it's borrowing and not transferring?

I did know about the April 30 deadline on banking those 2015 points. I will have them used up prior to that day.

^The March 2017 points can be used as "current " use year points for any trip between March 1, 2017 and February 28, 2018. If you want to use them for a trip that is during your March 2018 use year, you would need to bank them by October 31, 2017.

When you make the reservation for the Dec 2016 trip, you will be able to do it online and use Sep 2016 points and borrow any needed Sep 2017 points as part of the allowed procedures on the first page you get after you lock in the reservation for twenty minutes.

I only have one contract and one UY, but from my observation I think it would be OK to have two UY. While it makes for a little extra organization necessarily, I would think you could use banking/borrowing and the occasional transfer to easily handle using up all the points. And I can also see the advantage of booking trips based on when you travel relative to your UY to avoid the risk of being unable to bank a cancelled trip. (Book May trip with your April UY account, book October trips with your August UY account)

One question though for those more knowledgeable than I - if you have two contracts at different resorts, is there any difference to them being the same UY or a different UY? You clearly couldn't combine them at 11 months anyways. Would you be able to combine them at 7 months without a transfer? What advantage if any would a single UY give you.

Yes, there's a big difference. If they're the same use year, they show up together and can be seamlessly combined at 7 months.

The difference is less if they are a different home resort but it's still more difficult to combine points with separate contracts.
