I have a new house and a new baby and am thinking about buying a Roomba...Are they as great as they sound? New or refurbished? Any deals out there?

Would love to hear reviews, suggestions, etc.

Thanks in advance!:goodvibes

I have two of them and they are great! I got mine on woot, but they have deals on them at Target and Amazon sometimes, too. Or go to roomba.com they should have some deals as well.

They are nice to have. We have one that will do I think 3 rooms before battery needs recharging. They are great for that in between type cleaning. I would not to depend on just it for all my vaccuming. They do pick up more than I thought they would though. Make sure you get a docking station with it. You can program it to run on whatever schedule you want and then when the battery gets low it will makes it way back to the station to recharge. I think we got ours on ebay.

i won mine in a raffle. was disappointed. We put it in a room with carpet and it didn't pick up everything. Our living area was too big for it, but paying $50 for a base, was too much that the DW didn't want to spend. it was ok, but I'd rather do the old broom/swiffer route we do.

I got one for a Christmas gift from my husband almost 2 years ago and love it! Our main floor is basically 1 large room and I use it there the most. On the main floor we have hard wood, carpet and vinyl (kitchen). It goes well between all 3 floors. We do have spots where we have to block it from getting stuck on the quarter round or vents but once we figured those 4 spots out, we know what to do now. I set it to go and leave the house and when I get home, the floor is done :) We use it in the basement but not as often. My husband got me the basic model that didn't have the charger/base. We then bought the charger from the Roomba site for $30 and it was so worth it.

I agree with the person who said it doesn't take the place of complete cleaning. I still vacuum with my Hoover but this is good for cleaning every few days.

I have no experience with Roomba, but laughed when I saw this because on one of the episodes of the Bravo show "Flipping Out" there was a scene about Roomba and how the housekeeper Zoila hated it, LOL.

I have a labrador retriever (see her to the left?!) who sheds like crazy from April to October. I love that the roomba helps me keep up with the vacuuming. I still do a thurough vacuum once a week, but the roomba helps keep it nicer inbetween. I got mine through woot also and then ordered a second for upstairs. I like that I press the button before I leave the house and it usually finds its way back to the charger, so that it is ready to go again.

I loved loved loved my Rooma til it died a few months ago. Well it didn't die, it just turns in circles!! We had it about 2 years before it stopped working right, and I used it every few days. I'm asking for a new one for Christmas this year.

I was a person who used to sing the praises of roomba for all to hear. We have two cats, and I think they and I tie for shedding hair! Roomba was wonderful for managing that. I used it in addition to my big-mega vacuum, and I was careful to clean it every couple of sessions. But the thing just started to fall apart, despite my only running it about 2-3 times a week. First, the rotating side brush kept snapping apart like a twig. A complaint to them had them sending me 2 free ones and not too long after that they sent out a universal letter letting people know there was an issue and they could get some extra ones. The bumper strip fell off and no amount of glue or tape would get that sucker to hold for very long. Then it began stinking at picking up material until one day it began limping and turning in circles. I was just barely past the warranty date, but I still emailed them asking for what I could do. They basically said, "send it in and pay for repairs" without any suggestions. I did some research online, and it appears that in houses with dog/cat hair, that fur tends to creep up inside the Roomba and get into the gears. And yes, even despite regular brush/tray cleanings. We had to take Roomba entirely apart and we found gobs of hair wrapped up and inside of places I couldn't even imagine how it got there. I mean, what's the point of a vacuum if what it is meant to pick up kills it so quickly? So, we cleaned it out, and it worked okay for about another few months (though it still never worked nearly as well again), when the battery just quit on us. Now I understand that that is just going to happen, but it wasn't even a gradual death. It would show a fully charged light, start running, and inside of 2 minutes suddenly turn red and play the death knell. And frankly, I find it insane that as expensive as the battery is to replace, that it would last such a short time, even with following all the directions for optimum battery usage.

With that, I was done. Did not want to spend so much money to replace the battery of a product that was clearly circling the drain already. Luckily, I had purchased my Roomba with my AMEX which doubled the warranty. So just about 18 months after purchasing one, I got my money back.

It's a great product, but its durability just isn't what I think it should be for a $280 vacuum.

love...love...my Roomba...get them from Hammacher Schlemmer online and you have a "lifetime" guarantee....already have returned mine twice for different issues and received new machines back.....you might pay a little bit more but it's worth it in the long run.

Completely agree! We really liked it, but it died 2 weeks after the one-year warranty expired. We wrote to the company but no luck. They wouldn't even sell us replacement parts - would only give us a small discount to buy a new one. It doesn't pick up nearly as much as a regular vacuum and it does need frequent cleanings of the roller and brushes. We liked it for the year we had it, but will not be purchasing another one. There is an unofficial Roomba site that has fixing info and parts - I've been bugging DH to get on that.
I'm off to check the terms of our Amex - if it doubles the warranty, we might be able to still get our money back!

Go to the irobot site online. It has troubleshooting and tells you how to clean the cliff sensors. I had this happen to one before and the cleaning worked, did not work for another. I contacted them again for the other one, they sent a software update thingy that plugged into it. It worked.

Now I have the same issue with my newer roomba and my Dirt Dog. I have emailed them and they again sent me cleaning advice but also told me to respond with more info if it doesn't work. Hopefully it will be the pluggy in thingy again (technical term).

I bought my last one at BJ's, Dirt Dog at Amazon. Amazon gives battery discounts also.

I love the way it cleans under things (couch, bed etc)

Oh where do I begin? I have a definite love / hate relationship with my roombas (all of them have been named Rosie).::yes::

I think I'm on my third replacement in 2 years (the $$$ model). They WILL NOT replace her again tho as I had to threaten them with the BBB to get THIS one. Someone else mentioned theirs going in circles. That's what mine have all done before when they died. So did my Mom's and my Aunt's.

I have 2 cats & I run her 2x a week but I clean mine EACH time AND I use those cans of spray air in the censor areas. My second one seemed to do the best with the cat hair not getting twisted around the ends of the rollers. I do not set her to run automatically as she gets into trouble if I don't move some things & pick up first. I use 3 of the lighthouses and their batteries die often as well (2 C's).

Battery life...ummm...I have sort of a large home (well, the room sizes are larger than what they consider "normal") and my Rosie cannot even seem to finish my kitchen & foyer before she dies and needs a charge. It takes her 2 - 3 charges to do my family room and 3 - 4 charges to do my basement.

Why do I keep her around? Because I have rheumatoid arthritis & she is a big help when my hands are messed up. Not sure what I will do whenever THIS one dies...:confused3

(PS) Wish she did baseboards!

I have a refurbished one that I bought at Big Lots for around $100. We have three cats and it is helpful for managing the fur that they leave around. My biggest complaint is the time that it takes to clean. I have about 1100 sq. feet of hardwood on my main floor. Roomba will clean most of it on one charge but takes about 2 1/2 hours to do it. It is noisy and distracting. For this reason, I only use it when I won't be at home. Sometimes I will come home to find it has gotten stuck on something and only cleaned 1/2 of the floor.

It is a nice convenience to have, but more often then not, I find myself relying on my Swiffer. It takes only a few minutes and does a more thorough job.

If I had it to do over, I probably would have skipped this purchase.

I bought one from Costco and took it back. It couldn't get between my chairs in my dining room and I had to move them all out of the way first -- which kind of defeats the purpose of having a fully automated vacuum. Also, it would go and go and go and miss spots. I have all hardwood floors and it picked up fair enough but since it missed spots often it drove me insane.

You can 2 1/2 hours on ONE CHARGE?! Holy crap! I am lucky to an hour!! This is my orig. battery tho. THAT's why it takes me so many charges! And her getting stuck is why I DON'T run her when I'm not home!!

I had a Roomba, and it was fun for a while (especially since I hate vacuuming), but with a cat and carpeted floors, it really didn't work that well. I now use a bagless Kenmore Progressive, and it works SO much better than the Roomba ever did. I don't think the Roomba even picked up 75% of the hair and dirt the Kenmore does.

I have friends who don't have pets and have no carpet. It seems to work a lot better for their living situation.

Try taking out the battery and cleaning it with a soft cloth. Then put it back in. Mine sometimes does this (it's almost 2 years old) and cleaning the battery will fix this problem.

I had a roomba scheduler for about a year, then it decided that it wanted to climb up my leg/wall/table/virtually any vertical surface. I called for support and they confirmed that it was playing the "death march" tune. They offered me a replacement at a discount, but I couldn't justify spending that much money on something that would only last a year. That being said...I did love it during that year.

I hit a brilliant sale and picked up a Roomba at Kohls for only $40 - I think it was mismarked. I used it almost daily for the first month and then not so much. why? kids! lol. I have two kids and they leave stuff all over the house and the Roomba won't pick up anything bigger than a cheerio. So I was picking up stuff on the floor by hand and after a while, figured why bother? I just get out the big vacuum and I'm done in a few minutes while the Roomba would take 30 minutes or more to clean just the living room. It was a cute novelty, but not terrible functional for this family.
