So, I'm thinking about doing laundry while on our 7 day cruise. We are going to be in FL for three days prior to the cruise and then on board for 7 days obviously. I want to pack as minimally as possible, but I think that will necessitate doing laundry towards the beginning of the cruise, maybe the second or third day.

What have your experiences been with doing laundry? What do you take to do the laundry? Any tips on making it easier?

THANKS!

We usually do some laundry every cruise. Get up early to do it, there are not a lot of machines. We bring the liquid detergent pods in a ziplock bag and put the bag in a plastic storage container. You don't need change, you use your KTTW card for payment. Don't allow your laundry to sit unattended after the cycle is finished, people will remove your belongings if the machine is finished.

Early is better than late? I would have thought doing right after a show would be a good time, but then again, maybe that's when everyone would do it. How long do the cycles last?

We do laundry every cruise. We also take the detergent pods and dryer sheets. Stay with your laundry. It does take a little while so bring a book or check back often. There are machines scattered throughout the ship.

I'm an early riser so that's just my experience. I think each cycle is about 45 minutes.

Where are the laundry rooms located on the Fantasy? I have only done it on the Wonder.

To get your laundry done by DCL is very reasonable imo. I wouldn't waste time doing my laundry while on the ship. Enjoy your cruise.

I've never had a problem doing laundry late--but by late I mean 10 or so, not just after main dining. We are night owls, so it works for us and there are always plenty of machines.

I usually do laundry once during a 7 day cruise. I will do it after dinner (we have early seating). Our stateroom is usually in the middle and the laundry room is forward. I bring my own supplies, but you can purchase detergent in the facility. I use my suitcase to tote laundry back and forth. I feel no qualms leaving my laundry for a little while but I am always back toward the end of the cycle.

I usually purchase a box of laundry soap (powdered - don't like the risk of leaking/oozing liquids in my bags) at the dollar store. I can get a box large enough for at least 6-8 loads of laundry (we tend to take long - 14-24 night cruises) for the same price as the one load box out of the machine at home. If there's any left, I just write "FREE" on the box and leave it in the laundry room for someone else.

There is pay station to select your washer & dryer (not on the actual washer & dryer), although you do set the water temperature directly on the machines.
The pay station looks like this

Select "washer" or "dryer", then you see this:

or

Some laundry rooms have more than 2 washers, so the selection will A, B, C, D.....
Then you select the wash program (water temp) you want and press "start" (on the machines)

How long the cycle is:

We've never waited through the whole cycle for our laundry to be done, but we do note what time it's supposed to be done and come back about 10 minutes early. It's a real problem when people put their laundry in there and don't return for hours.

The longer the cruise, the more "competition" you'll have in the laundry room. On our Panama Canal cruise 5 years ago the line started forming around 6 a.m. That's the last time I engaged in the battle for the washing machines. To me, vacation means leaving household chores at home where they belong, so I pack enough undies for the duration, up to 18+ days, and if we get hot and sweaty I'll send out some shirts/slacks to be professionally cleaned. I'm worth it. Our stuff fits into one suitcase each, and we don't go over the 50-lb airline limit.

Remember that the closest machines maybe one floor up or down instead of walking to the other end of the ship.

Also, one room may have no machines available and the other floors maybe empty.

We are early risers also, so we are in there before 8am and have no issues getting a machine, by the time we are folding is about the time more people are starting to gather and a wait can happen for the machines.

We have done laundry on our last Fantasy cruise for similar reasons to you. We were in Orlando 2 days prior to the cruise and knew that we'd be on the ship for 7 so I was trying to pack somewhat light so on our second full day (which was a port day that we didn't plan getting off at) I threw in two loads into 2 washers on our way to breakfast. I put a timer for 30 min on my phone and ensured I was back down to the laundry room before it was done. I had the laundry room to myself because it was early in the cruise and it was a port day and it was early (7:45ish). I moved those two loads to two dryers and went to the room for 30 min and went back. I was always back before it was done but never saw another machine in use. While I was pulling the stuff out of the dryer I saw someone come in to use the iron and that was it. Note: I had to combine a few items from my two dryers to dry them once again because they didn't get quite dry. Be sure to bring a couple of extra dryer sheets. I use the 3 pack of liquid tide from the Target travel section and I bring all 3 even though I planned on using 2 because I wasn't sure how expensive it would be and I was afraid I'd want to do a 3rd load. However, as others have said, the cost of buying the detergent there wasn't that expensive. I remember thinking it was for the dryer sheets but those are super easy to throw in your suitcase. :)

It didn't scare me off from doing it again. I actually plan to do it again when I go to Alaska in May since we'll be in Vancouver for 3 days prior. However, I'm going to try to make it just one load instead of two if possible. And the machines are much smaller than you think. A good judge would be that it fits a little more than a plastic Target bag. I learned that the laundry bag that is in your stateroom holds a load but if you are trying to decide at home what you might wash, use a Target bag to help you judge. I'm a planner and I will actually do that when I pack for Alaska. :)

We did laundry once on the Fantasy late at night, and had no problems. We didn't stay in the laundry room, but made sure we were back before the cycle ended. As it turned out we were the only ones in there. I think we did laundry on day 3 or 4. (we spent 4 days at WDW before the cruise)

We have done laundry on each of our 4 cruises, multiple times.

Our first cruise I brought laundry pods (All Free & Clear Mighty pods), but when I used them I discovered that they have WAY too much detergent for the small washers on ship (well, and probably any front load washer, to be honest). It took four full wash cycles to get the rinse water running non-soapy. Lessons learned: no more pods (we also have stopped using them at home for a similar reason -- too much detergent; check cycle BEFORE it is done so you can see how the rinse is going.

For the rest of our cruises I brought a 250 mL Nalgene container (leakproof) with a narrow opening (on the last cruise I brough some extra in a wide mouth Nalgene and discovered how hard it is to pour without making a mess; narrow-mouth it is) (this is the one I prefer, in 4 oz size: http://www.containerstore.com/s/tra...ound-leakproof-bottles/12d?productId=10000243 as opposed to the wide-mouth version which was messy for pouring into a small mouth bottle: http://www.containerstore.com/s/tra...47&green=43DD7379-9892-55A2-952A-1606B5E0F13B ) filled with the liquid detergent we use at home (All Free & Clear concentrated).

I have a nice small plastic measure that measures 1 tsp and 1 tbsp in the same measure. I use one at home and I have one for traveling. I also bring an extra of the normal measuring cap for the liquid (again, the lines = too much detergent). On ship I use just over 1 TEASPOON of detergent.

Because our household had sensitivites to any detergent but the one we use, and to even it if left in clothing, laundry when traveling is an expensive proposition. But I still do it.

I do one wash cycle with a couple towels to reduce the amount of other people's detergent/detergent fragrance left in the washer. The towels are then run through the dryer too.

On our last trip on the Dream it usually took 3 wash cycles to get the detergent out. Then into the dryer or back to the stateroom.

I have a mesh pop-up hamper that is used for folded clean clothes and for draping things that cannot go in the dryer (think bras).

On a WDW trip many years ago we discovered some really nice laundry bags with mickey on them and use those for dirty clothes. Those bags I will then usually carry inside the popup hamper to the laundry room. the bags get washed with the clothes.

In our room on our last trip I brought my own clothesline and hung it in the shower. It worked GREAT for letting bathing suits to hang dry from it, saving them from the dryer most of the time. Attached is a pic of what it looked like in action. If anyone is interested I can post info about what I used to make it.

I brought some small plastic clothespins but have never in the end used them; will still prolly bring on the next trip as they don't take up much space.

For washing some things I prefer to do it in a mesh bag (lingerie bag), so I have a couple that I bring for them.

I also bring a Scrubba wash bag ( http://thescrubba.com/ ) and use it in lieu of the washer for some things. Sometimes.

Finally, PP have noted that the nearest laundry room may be above or below you. On our first cruise on the Dream we were going to go to the washer on deck 6 i think it was (we were on deck 5). I ran into our stateroom host on the way to laundry and he asked which room I was going to, I told him and he explained i should instead use the laundry room on deck two as it was actually a shorter trip (down the hall down the elevator and right there, vs down the hall up the stairs or elevator then down the hall again). It is SO MUCH easier using the deck 2 one and I am so glad I saw him when I did. On the Dream for our recent B2B the laundry room was on the same floor as us and really close to our room, which made it even easier to use.

I should add that I usually do the laundry in the wee hours of the morning so there is almost always nobody else around. I set the timer on my smartphone for a few minutes before the cycle will end. The coupel times I have done laundry during the day or evening I have been lucky that there has not been too many others doing the same thing.

On both my Disney cruises, I have had great success doing laundry around 10:30/11 pm (mid-way through the cruise), after my wife and daughter have gone to sleep.

Grab the laundry. Grab a book. Grab a machine for darks, whites and colors. Set a timer on my phone. Head up on deck for a late night snack. Come back and throw clothes in the dryer. Finish snack. Fold laundry (I could care less about wrinkles on shirts and shorts on a cruise, so no ironing) and head back to the room.

We just did ours this past cruise. I got up at 6am and started it going. Machines were always open then. They got busy around 8am or so and stayed that way until 10pm.

Note they were wide open until about day 4. Then they got busy really, really fast.
