Tell me about iTUNES

So I am new to the Ipod thing and I am interesting in buying a refurbed nano previous generation...
So tell me about itunes, am I going to get a virus from it? Does it take up excessive amounts of computer space? Is it is a pain? Its free right, I just have to pay for the songs? Do I have to give a CC, or can I just continuously buy gift cards for the songs?
Pros/cons? What would you like to share.

Itunes (the software) is generally accepted as the gold standard for digital music management, especially if you have an Ipod.

Itunes (the music store) is Apple's media downloading site where you can download songs, albums, TV shows, movies, podcasts, ringtones, etc.You won't get a virus from Itunes.

There are other pay downloading sites where you can also download media that will transfer into Itunes (the software) and play on your Ipod. Amazon has a very good one, too.

You won't get a virus from Itunes or Amazon. You may get a virus from peer-to-peer music downloading sites like Limewire. Be careful downloading wih those.

And you didn't ask about this, but I would only buy a refurbed Ipod from the Apple Store. They give you a new battery, new outer shell and a 1-year warranty. I've bought refurbed Ipods from them in the past and you couldn't tell them from the new ones.

Yes that is what I am currently looking at from apple.com, I am pretty excited about it, everyone says that it is a good deal and like you said, can't tell them from a new one.

how do I listen to it in my car, there must be some sort of adapter or something? And if so does it have to be apple's brand, and speakers, do they have to be apple brand?

As a contrary view - I generally enjoy itunes. . . except for how it has a tendency to split compilation or movie albums ripped from my private collection into 10 or 15 different albums. (Classic Disney Vol 1, for example, it listed as being 12 or 15 different albums right now.) Yes, I know how to fix it. . . . but boy is it annoying as heck, especially when you move a large, established music library over to itunes.

Another good thing: you can add your own music to iTunes. Your own mp's and your complete CD collection.

No, good questions--these are the things you start thinking about when you want to take your tunes with you.

It all depends on what type of stereo you have in your car.

If you have a cassette tape player in your car, you can buy an adapter for $10 or so. You plug one end into your Ipod, the "cassette" looking end goes into your cassette player and you're good to go.

If you have a stereo with an "Aux" plug-in (which are fairly common on newer models), you buy an aux cord for $5-10. Plug one end into your Ipod and the other into the aux port on your stereo.

If you're like me and have a car that's kind of in between eras--too new for a cassette adapter but not new enough to have an aux port--you'll either have to have a new stereo installed in your car, or buy a radio transmitter. Transmitters have uneven performance, as you can tell from these reviews for the transmitter I use.

You can buy any of these from any consumer electronics store like Best Buy or even Wal-Mart. You can also buy them from the Apple Store--they sell a lot of Ipod-related gear.
