I am trying to convince DH to go somewhere different with our DVC. What sort of activities do they have? We have a 11 yr old DD, is there fun stuff for her too?

We were excited for our 1st visit next week. I don't know if that's going to happen after the hurricane

Very beautiful place and laid back Can only speak about our visits in summer. Daily fun and games at pool for the kids.daily activites are also offered for kids some with a fee.The staff is wonderful. There are fishing or dolphin tours can be booked. Plenty of great restaurants and shopping on island. You can drive to Savannah for the day. The beach house and beach are wonderful can drive your car or take the villa shuttle. The only place to buy food is counter service Tide me Over at the resort. It is a great family vacation .

Activities run all year round. There are lots of resort activities offered every day. In addition, when the weather's nice, there are campfires and movies in the evening. There's a heated pool with a water slide at the resort. And although there are no characters (although I hear that Plutos been dropping by lately), there's Shadow, the resort's mascot resident dog and her constant companion B'leu Crabbe-

We went this summer for the first time. It is more like a traditional vacation than a theme park vacation. Our two grandsons loved it. We went shark fishing one day. Our seven year old grandson caught a six foot shark (needed some help to get it to the boat (all catch and release)). Also caught a 40 lb redfish. Went to the ocean every day (as flatlanders in fly over country that is a treat). Bought boogie boards and when the tide was coming in it was fun to play in the ocean. The ocean is warm in July. The two swimming pools (one at the resort and one at the beach house) were fun. The one at the resort has a good slide. The cast is awesome. They have evening activities for the kids. The boys loved the campfire and s'mores and the movie night. They also have a pirate cruise (not disney) that is more suited to the 5-7 year olds. We rented bicycles and went all over the island. If she is into sailing the Americas Cup winning boat is on the island and can be taken out for a cruise. There is a dolphin watching cruise that was fun. You can rent various watercraft and play. They had a pirate night at the resort where the kids played different games for pirate themed prizes. In the summer there are fireworks once a week at the cove but you can see them very well from the resort. We played miniature golf (not disney), did some shopping (upscale shops on Hilton Head) and ate a lot of seafood. There are helicopter tours, segway tours and the girls did an afternoon at a spa. It was a great vacation , different than our typical theme park vacation.

Another thread says it will open in Wednesday!
On line at the member website, it doesn't give any dates for reopening. They aren't letting residents back on the island yet, no power. So it would be hard to determine the status of the resort unless someone rode it out there.

Can anyone comment how HHI compares to Vero Beach? We were at Vero Beach and thought it was nice, though way smaller than the DVC resorts we are used to staying at on property.
Is the beach on the resort at HHI similar to Vero Beach?
Anything within walking distance? At Vero you definitely need a car it seemed like.

Thanks!

We have a family member on HHI. They "think" that by Tuesday they might start letting residents back on the island. There's no power, water is on a boil order, sewer system is not functioning, trees are blocking most roads, hospital is closed etc. (They are starting clearing with main roads)

I expect visitors and timeshare owners won't be allowed back for quite a while. It's a mess[/QUOTE]

We absolutely love this resort for the following reasons:
1. It is relaxing. We go there and just spend hours at the beach, and then the beach house, and then back to the resort pool. Then dinner and then to campfire.
2. Dole Whips.
3. The cast: the people there are truly top notch. They bring the Disney level of service to a whole new level. We especially love the lifeguards. They are great with kids and have 2 or 3 activities per day and sometimes crafts. My daughter had to give the lifeguards all hugs on the day we left. There is a cast member named Ella that is a genuinely sweet and kind person. She always brightens our day.
4. Bicycling. I wake up earlier than the rest of the family. I rent a bike there and take it out each morning on the beach. A nice workout and a lot of fun.
5. Campfire. Campfire is really awesome as a lot of people attend. My daughter loves it and I have fun as well. We go every night they have it. On other nights, Goofy Bingo is fun too- free candy
6. The pool. We love just hanging out at the pool. They have fun events for the kids like trivia.
7 shadow and B'Lou. Shadow the dog is great. My daughter talks about shadow. B'Lou has fun music events for the kids.
8. Free cookies. 3 pm, free fresh baked cookies and lemonade.
9. Kroger: Kroger is walking or biking distance. Prices are definitely fair and the beer is pretty cheap. We stock up our cooler for the beach.
10. The beach water is good for small kids. A good amount of area to play, and the water forms these small pools during low tide that the kids can play in. Plus it is warmer than the closest beach to our house.
11. Free dvd's. We actually partake in this and get together to watch a few movies.

Overall it's a great place to visit and relax and bond as a family. The cost of food and activities for us is much less than Disney World.

HHI much more active than Vero. I can only take Vero for 2-3 days and really don't like the 30 minute drive to do anything or eat out. If you are an active person and like to ride bikes, you could get by without a car but there are a lot of fun things to do off island (Savannah, outlets, etc). You can walk or ride bikes across bridge to Shelter Cove shops (although restaurants there are a bit pricey). Can also do some excursions from there. Just a little further away - maybe a quarter mile - is a newish outdoor shopping/dining center. Lots of restaurants of a variety of prices and cuisine. Mini-golf in walking/riding distance. Plus, Disney offers a lot of fun options. My favorite resort.
