I just found out I am going on a business trip to Dresdin Germany!! I am excited about it but know absolutely nothing about Dresdin or Germany (other than I am looking forward to sampling all the different beer and food). I have only visited 2 foriegn countries in my adult life (Japan and New Jersey :rotfl: )

Any info about interesting things to do/visit. What foods /beer to try. What the climate is like (going April 29th to May 20th) Would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

John

I found this. Hopefully you will get some great ideas. I was in Germany many years ago but not to that particular city. There is so much to do and see in Europe. I would plan for a few extra days or 10 to sight see. Traveling Europe is like driving from state to state, you can hit several countries in a short period of time.

Definitely plan some extra time there other than for business. Germany is one of the most beautiful and interesting places in the world. I have been there many times, but never to Dresdin. There is a user here on the DIS that lives somewhere in Germany. Maybe he can give you some tips.

I haven't been to Dresden, but I have been to Germany, and it's a neat country (both literally and figuratively!) It can get chilly and drizzly that time of year, so pack some sweaters and a rain jacket. But it's also a pretty time of year with lots in bloom. I really liked the weiner schnitzel in Germany (that was before I became a vegetarian!) and the wursts are very tasty (also pre-vegetarian!) They have some good chocolate, also. As for the beers, why don't you try them all, and tell us which ones are good? :teeth: Have a great trip!

Be prepared, many germans have a strong dislike for americans. This is not necessarily without merit. We tend to be quite arrogant and have a real sense of entitlement. The thing to remember is that just because we do it one way here in america doesn't mean the rest of the world has to follow suit. You are a guest in THEIR country, not the other way around. Also remember that not everyone speaks english. Learn some basic phrases in german. The more you try to fit in the more they'll be open to helping you.

That being said, I spent some time there in 98 and 99. It's beautiful. I only breezed through Dresden on a day trip. Look out, the beer is much stronger than you are used to! And I second the schnitzel (which doesn't contain weiners lol), I loved it. Also, their desserts are wonderful! They aren't as sweet as ours and I actually like them better.

We have a few Disers who are german, hopefully they'll pop in and offer their suggestions.

Have a wonderful time, I'm so jealous! I'd love to go back someday.

I know this is probably not the information that you are looking for, but one thing that I remember being taught in a history class in college.

When England went to war with Germany in WWI, Dresden was one of the first cities that England bombed. Dresden once made beautiful china supposedly - enough to rival England china business, I guess you can figure out their reasoning.

I'd be curious to see what Dresden china looked like. Anyway if I went to Dresden I would be curious to see what Dresden china looked like.

Have fun! Also realize that Germany is hosting World Cup (soccer/football) right after the dates that you mentioned. If you plan to stay slightly longer, you may try to catch a game in one of the host cities. A World Cup game is something that should not be missed, it is a wonderful experience.

Thanks everyone for the info. I will have to see if I can get any extra time. I already maxed out my vacation for my trip "home" in august so I may not get to stay any extra time.
