I love mine! I bought it as a Christmas present to myself (no one else gives me gifts so I tend to spoil myself). I download books through Kindle Iphone app - the majority of them have been free. I have downloaded movies and free tv shows through Itunes. I have free games, lists, Facebook, banking apps, email, etc. all that I use during down time at work or waiting at appointments. I would suggest making sure that you have a wireless connection at home - makes it much easier. Once all your apps and music are on your computer it is very easy to charge and update your Ipod.
Go now and download Itunes on your computer. You can receive free music on Tuesdays by signing up for their email - the song is their choice but I have received some good ones. Upload all your cds on the computer and you have the beginnings of a music library.
There is a thread on the Budget Board with a list of free apps - you can go ahead and download them now while they are free through Itunes. Then once you decide on an ipod you will already have them ready. There is also an app called AppSniper that I paid $0.99 for that will tell you apps that are free or on sale.
Also look for a wifi locating app - this will help you find wifi within your location - many restaurants, malls and stores have free wifi but there is plenty to do on the Itouch even if you can't access the web.
