Tell me about adopting a child

Okay, you got a lurker on the Dis to register! Actually, I've never visited the Community Board before, so it was very interesting that I found your thread!

Our older daughter came to us with the help of Adoptions from the Heart four years ago. They are a fabulous agency; I have only wonderful things to say about them. We would have used them for our second child, too, but we ending up with a surprise and got her the "old fashioned" way!

I see this is an older post, but if I can answer any questions for you, I'm more than willing to help!

Lori

OK, so how long ago did i start this thread:rotfl: I thought it was just a couple of months. I have to say thank you so much for this post. Dh and I are concluding that all the signs are pointing here. I just emailed them for a couple of questions and once those are answered then I think we're going to apply there. I'd ask you questions but I don't even know what else to ask LOL.

Welcome to the DIS:wizard:

:eek::eek::eek: OH DEAR!! I talked to a woman on the phone from BBAS...Denise ...I think? She sounded so professional and convincing. However, I looked them up and came across the story that you are referring too....HOW AWFUL!! I threw my "info packet" from them in the trash! :sad2:

My husband and I are really going to be careful with which agency we choose. Have you heard anything about Family Adoption Consultants? They have offices in Ohio and Michigan. They work with a New York based agency called Spence Chapin. Also, they only do international adoption, which I think that is the route we are going to take. We are afraid the problems we might run into with the Birthmother if we go Domestic. We really DO NOT want an open adoption and we were told that open adoptions are encouraged more in Domestic. :confused3 We just don't want to have to feel controlled by the birthmother in ANY way....

My son was adopted through FAC. They are wonderful! I will warn you they are not a high tech, slick advertising type agency but they have wonderful heart. My son was a waiting child from Korea. We received wonderful records, information and great interaction. I would highly recommend them. Please feel free to ask any questions. I am happy to share!

Hee! I guess it wasn't that long ago!

In reference to your comment about signs, I'd love to share our story. We had been trying for 4 years with no luck. We were seeing an reproductive endocrinologist who couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. About a week before I was to have exploratory surgery, DH and I decided that this was taking a toll on us and we needed to try something different.
My birthday was on Thanksgiving that year and that's the day we decided we wanted to explore adoption. SUCH a sense of peace came over me once we decided. I KNEW it was the right decision.
So we decided on AFTH, went through all of the steps and finally went into the books on July 5. We ended up being chosen three weeks later (after we were told to expect an 18 month wait!). Our daughter was born two weeks after that.
Fast forward a few months later to our first meeting with the birth family. We found out that our daughter was conceived on Thanksgiving, the same day we decided to adopt. Years later and it still gives me chills to think about that!:goodvibes

I'm so happy for you and wish you the best! I remember how overwhelming it can all be. So if you do think of any questions, just give me a shout!

You're going to have to keep posting now that you've started, you know that? :welcome:

We used FAC to adopt our DD from Korea twenty years ago......they are a great agency and we still get their news letter :)
I think the some of the same social workers are still there!

What an awesome thread. I am Canadian and domestic adoption is done through our local Childrens Aid Society, so I can't really help there. But my hubby and I just did adopt two siblings and would be happy to share any insight for older child adoptions. We adopted a 2 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. We decided to start our family this way and we are so thrilled we did. It is the most amazing journey with a lot of tears along the way. The waiting game can be pretty horrible, but you forget it all the moment you get the call.
