Tell me about 12x12, margins, photobooks & stuff getting chopped off.

I haven't actually done a digital layout yet, but when I do, my plan is to have them printed into photobooks.

I've been reading tutorials and watching youtube videos to learn and I think I'm starting to understand.

One thing I saw mentioned somewhere was about 12x12 not fulling printing in photobooks?

My plan when I start, was to use some 12x12 templates for my first digital layouts.

I found this statement on a blog:
I create at 12x12 300 dpi. But I do find it a little annoying to create a Shutterfly book, the size has to be 9.75" with room for a bleeding edge, and margins for page binding. I always have to modify digital templates I purchase to fit Shutterfly's standards in order to have it bound in a book.

Here is another example of what I'm afraid of.
http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/chat...-page-booster-layered-templates-s4h-okay.html

In post #1, she says she's re-doing all her layouts to be photobook "safe". After the images, she says they are all 12.25x12.25 now. Is that really what you need to do? I thought people created in 12x12.

I'm confused & haven't even started yet.
Could someone explain this to me so I can do thing correctly from the beginning & not have to do my layouts over? I'm not positive what company I'll use for the photobooks yet. Is this only a problem with Shutterfly?

I have not done books in 12x12, just in 8x8 but I suspect that people make the pages slightly bigger because when the book gets bound, you may loose stuff on the right hand side (on the left page) and then on the left hand side (on the right side) because of the book binding. (does that make sense?) I just try not to put anything to close to the edges of the page. looking at one of my shutterfly books, there is definently about half a centermeter of each page in the binding. this is true of snapfish books as well.

I have had 12x12 pages printed and then just stuck those into top loading page protectors and then there is no issue. :)

Thank you. Might just do that 2nd idea as I can add memoribelia from trip too.

The digital program I use, you can view the book to see if anything is cut off in the binding stitching area. It's a good look to look for, you wouldn't want to lose part of a photo or journaling.

And what program might that be?

CM Storybook Plus 3.0. Love it!

Shutterfly has templates you can download that are the correct page size and have the margins marked for their pages. You can find them here. There is also a designer that makes actions for most of the photobooks. PM me for her name and store, since I don't know what I can post. They only work in PSE & PSCS.

I've never made 12x12, but for 8x8 books I resize to 7.75 x 7.75 and then I move anything too close to the edge, especially on the binding side. The Shutterfly templates at the Shutterfly site are pretty useless. I imagine for 12x12 you should resize to 11.5 x 11.5 prior to moving stuff off the edge.

rofl, I had no idea those were even there.... they look pretty handy though, thanks for sharing. :)

Nicurn's idea of just printing 12x12 & slipping into plastic sleeves albums is looking easier. :rotfl: And at least I'll know exactly how its going to come out.

Nothing to worry about if making 12x12 & printing 12x12, right? Nothing is going to get cut off?

well, I've never had a problem. I would just make sure that you don't have anything right up against the edge. :)

I used the templates last year to make photobooks for my parents & in-laws and found the guides on them to be quite useful. I didn't have anything that I kept inside the blue lines cut off.
