I am a planner, as I think many of us are. I would love to be more spontaneous, but it just isn't really me.

That being said, I have always been fascinated by a story told to me by a couple I met while living in the Chicago suburbs. She worked for one of the airlines, and I guess she could fly standby or something.

Anyway, they told me how they woke up early one dreary, rainy fall morning feeling kind of blah about the day, when they got the idea to go to Disney. They quickly packed, were able to get on a standby flight and by the afternoon, they were in the sunny Magic Kingdom!

Has anyone else had an experience like that?

Wish I could but when you have kids and animals that takes time to plan for.

We've done weekends like this before. Never the same day, but decided in the afternoon to see what's available at the resorts and leave in the morning. With APs and living in St Pete, it's not really the same thing though, I guess.

6 years ago, i had just separated from my wife of 15 years (highschool sweetheart), and had been in my new apt for a week.

I was lonely, and feeling sorry for myself. It was the first time i had ever been alone in my life. I was flipping through the tv channels when i came across a tv show about the mechanics of Disneyworld attractions.

I watched the show, and then hopped over to the Disney website and priced out a trip, booked it, hopped into my van and started driving. 2100 KMs and 18 hours later (yeah i sped) i checked into my room at Pop for 5 days. The 2100 KMs back home were horrible though...

One regular Friday morning about 10 am my husband and I were talking on the phone (he was at work). It was a cold day in January, in NJ, and we were bored. The Giants were in the playoffs against the Buccaneers that Sunday. So my husband suggested we get an AP rate at Disney and have my mom take the kids MK for the day while we go to the game.

I picked up the kids at school at 2:40 and asked them if they would like to spend Saturday in the Magic Kingdom. By 4pm we were on the road, yes we drove, heading to WDW. We got there late Saturday afternoon, had dinner at the Turf Club and went to bed. Next morning we had breakfast with my mom and the kids and headed to Tampa, while they headed to MK.

That night we met them at DHS and had dinner at 50's Prime Time. The next morning at 4:30 am we were back on the road.

The weather that weekend was pure perfection and our last minute trip was a blast.
