*** Television, Fall 2009 ***

NBC is aiming itself at an American Idol clone:
"The Sing-Off," NBC's upcoming a capella singing competition series, will be traveling to four U.S. cities in September searching for the most talented a capella singing groups to compete on the series for a chance at an Epic Records/Sony Entertainment recording contract. Auditions will take place in New York City (Sept. 12), Chicago (Sept. 14), Atlanta (Sept. 16) and Los Angeles (Sept. 19). A capella music has been the basis and inspiration for many top musical acts on the charts from Motown to Boyz to Men. Recently it has been the focus of national tournaments and exploded in popularity on college campuses all over the country. With a strong fan base and largely untapped talent pool, it has never been the center of a musical competition until now. The best of the best are going to compete on a national stage. From Joel Gallen's ("America's Best Dance Crew") Tenth Planet Productions, Outlaw Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television, "The Sing-Off" will feature the country's top a cappella groups performing popular songs like you've never heard them before. There's no lip-synching, back-up bands or safety net. They'll be singing for America's vote with the winner walking away with the ultimate prize - an Epic Records/Sony recording contract.
The "Sing-Off" will be broadcast over three nights, December 14, 15, 16 and then the finale will be presented the next Monday, December 21.

Dollhouse is ending. No episodes will be ordered past the 13 that have been ordered for this season. They'll burn those off and that'll be it.

Hank is gone now.
Yup, already noted as "Ending" in the first message. This more recent news sounds more extreme than just "Ending".

Not really a big shock but I do wish that something would click with Kelsey Grammar because I'd love to see him in another great show.
I'm not sure Grammar necessarily has another Frasier Crane up his sleeve. :confused3

Yeah, I highly doubt it but quite frankly, I'm not sure people would want another Frasier anyway.
Personally, I loved the show all along but thought that the last season was just awful. I do think that he would be much better in a dramatic role at this point. He pulls them off really well when he does them ~ he just doesn't do them often.

Bicker, do you know anything about who dies on "The Mentalist"? They said a loved agent dies next week. I have a theory, but I won't say here yet. Several leading things in last night's episode.

Believe it or not, the fall television season is almost over. The (fall) season finales begin this week. The winter television season doesn't really begin until January 1, so we don't have a really good idea of what it will look like yet, but we should have a better view within the next three weeks, so I'll be starting a Winter 2009 thread soon.

I wouldn't get concerned, because the show is doing okay, pretty-much, but I do find it strange that ABC has changed their plans for Castle. Instead of presenting new episodes on November 30 and December 7, those will both be reruns now, so basically we get two more episodes of Castle this fall (tonight and next week) and then Castle returns on January 4.

This is in synch with what the plan has always been for Grey's Anatomy: We get one more episode this week, and then reruns and preemptions through the holiday season when fewer people are watching television consistently. Grey's Anatomy will return on January 14.

Less popular shows will be presented during the holiday season; Private Practice, for example, has two new episodes scheduled for December 3.

Okay, strike that. ABC put out another press release yesterday, effectively reversing their previous press release. There will be a new episode of Castle on December 7.

In other news, for folks (like us) who put Vampire Diaries aside, because it was on up against powerhouses like Bones, FlashForward, and Survivor, evidently CW has gotten the message. They're offering us a second chance to catch the series, rebroadcasting all ten episodes presented during the week of December 14 (when most other programs are in reruns), 8pm - 10pm, Monday through Friday.

Time is running out. Oil is running out. Climate change is real, and the crisis is worse than we thought.

The acclaimed writer of The Full Monty, Simon Beaufoy, brings us this explosive television event: a high-stakes conspiracy thriller set against the backdrop of the world's corrupt and violent oil industry and the desperate attempts of those trying to save the planet from global warming.

This gripping mini-series is a unique blend of ripped-from-the-headlines facts and suspenseful storytelling, putting us on a rollercoaster ride from the blinding deserts of Saudi Arabia to the elegant mansions of London's oil barons.

Alice

Using the classic Lewis Carroll books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass as a jumping off point, writer/director Nick Willing has created the modern-day story of Alice Hamilton (Caterina Scorsone), a fiercely independent twenty-something who suddenly finds herself on the other side of a looking glass. She is a stranger in an outlandish city of twisted towers and casinos built out of playing cards, all under the rule of the deliciously devilish Queen of Hearts (Oscar winner Kathy Bates) who's not very happy about Alice's arrival.

In the course of her adventure, Alice enlists the help of an array of characters including the resistance fighter Hatter (Andrew-Lee Potts), resistance leader Dodo (Tim Curry) and the White Knight (Matt Frewer).

Rounding out the stellar cast are Colm Meaney as the King of Hearts, Harry Dean Stanton as Caterpillar, Alessandro Juliani as 9 of Clubs, Timothy Webber as Carpenter, Alex Diakun as Ratcatcher, and Eugene Lipinski as Doctors Dee and Dum.

For this re-imagined adaptation, writer/director Nick Willing mines the bizarre ingenuity and twisted logic of Carroll's work to create a daringly different, boldly colorful and delightfully skewed dreamscape of his own. Willing also directed the record-breaking, Emmy-winning miniseries Tin Man for Syfy in 2007. Serving as executive producers for this ambitious new event are Matthew O'Connor and Lisa Richardson from Reunion Pictures, Jamie Brown from Studio Eight and RHI Entertainment's Robert Halmi Sr. and Robert Halmi Jr.
