long story short can't get the canon now...tamrom is about 70 cheaper than kenko..anyone know anything about any of these...only review i saw rated the tamron 3.5, kenko 4.8 so wondering if there is that big a difference? if so it would be worth the $70

So you can't get the Canon 1.4x right now *but*... how about this approach? Since the Tamron/Kenko/Sigma converters are not made for your lens we will assume they are not quite as sharp, etc. as the Canon. We will also add in the one stop more that you will have to open the lens, and the extra shake due to the 1.4x.

By the time all this is done you may be almost as well off by just enlarging the image another 1.4x without the converter. Add in the cost of the white paint for the Tamron/Kenko/Sigma and it's close. ;)

I would wait until I could get the real thing, unless it's absolutely no way.

the Tamron and Kenko are the same. they make 2 models - a regular and a pro/sp which has more elements. the pro/sp 1.4 is actually very nice and works with far more lenses than the canon version. its sharpness is pretty much on par with the canon version, imho. i use the tamron 1.4x SP with my 120-300 2.8 and i've been extremely happy.

i noticed the tamron ( pro type models, forget the initials they use sp maybe) said you could only use it with f2.8 or larger ? i know most of the others say f4 which was what made me wonder about that one..so have you ever used it with f4? i thought it was 70 cheaper but that's not the pro models so it's 20 cheaper than kenko. i am going to see how my photos look though for the cropping pp...although i also wanted it for my macro to magnify that and hopefully get me away from using the 1;1 attachment ( although not sure what the ratio would be it would be closer to 1:1 than 1:2 )
deciding between that and a monopod...decisions decisions
