How many folks out there work from home some or all of the time? My company has now instituted the option to telecommute due to gas prices. Are you seeing similar changes where you work?

My DH telecommutes 2-3 days a week. His normal round trip drive to and from work is about 100 miles. He figures that he drive about 10,000 miles less a year by telecommuting.

I've been telecommuting for 7 years. I went for 3 years without going to the office at all - then I started going in once a month - now I go once a week. This September my youngest will be 5 and will probably be in school - if so I will start going back 2 days :)

I haven't paid for my own gas since I started going back to the office once a week :)

ETA: it's 120 miles round trip to my office

I've been telecomutting 5 days a week from home since last June.

I
Love
It!

In my case it was due to my company getting too big and needing the space my division occupied. A study was done and it was determined that it was most cost effective to move us home (vs. laying us off and outsourcing us, how nice! :) ).

In general my company does have a flex work schedule, depending on your duties you can apply to work from home anywhere from 1 day a week to 5 days a week (5 days is rare). Some of our telecomuters don't have perminate desks since they are home more than at work, so we have empty cubicls that you can reserve for the days you'll be in the office. I have no idea how many people now work from home at least some days, but judging by how full the "visitor" lot is on days when we have all-staff meetings, I'd say it's at 5% to 10% of our work force.

I work from home all but 6 days out of the month (I go in to the office 3 days a week every third week) and I love it. I've done it now for over 3 years.

I can get so much more done here (actual work!) and the gas savings is great.

I've been a telecommuter for almost 4 years now and I love it! I don't know what I'd do if I had to actually get dressed to go to work :rotfl:

I telecommute 3 days a week I've been doing that for about a year. Before that I went into the office 3 days and worked from home 2 days. I haven't gone into the office 5 days a week since 2001. You'd think with the gas situation more companies would allow working from home.

I've telecommuted for 6 years. I didn't like it at first, felt lonely. But I do like it now. Most of my company telecommutes so when we do all get together maybe once a year or so, it's fun to see everyone.

Hubby and I both work from home. He telecommutes and I freelance PT. We started homeschooling so even our kids "work" from home! Dont forget to get your auto insurance discount!! (the difference of what you save in gas might be seen as added $ on your power bill. Just fyi.) (well, depending on your commute. Ours was very very short. 10 -15minutes.)

Sigh! I telecommute in my dreams! I keep asking and they keep telling me "No." :confused3

I'd love to telecommute as I have a 150 mile round trip daily commute. And as long as I have an internet connection and a cell phone, I can do my job! :rolleyes1

The great news is I'm being transferred to another area of the company at the request of that area's vice president. Fingers crossed that I can work from home at least 1 day a week!

Hoping to join the telecommuting ranks soon! :surfweb:

DH does telecommuting and a condensed work week.

He works 14-16 hour days/3x a week. Of those 3 days, he only goes into the office one day.

He's been telecommuting pretty steadily since last July/August.

I telecommute once per week. I would LOVE to do more, but the nature of my job doesn't allow it, since my co-workers want the chance to do it, too. I drive 24 miles each way, and I only work 4 hrs per day (part time). That's an awfully long way to go for 4 hrs.

I work at home one day per week. But when I am in the office, I just sit in my cubicle, doing my work, only occasionally attending meetings. So basically I do the same thing on a 35 mile commute that I could do without the commute. Considering lobbying for more days at home, due to gas prices, but our management can be big on "face time."

Downside to telecommunting....I eat more!

We have it offered to us but I'm not interested. I like getting out of the house and being around people. Plus if I was home I would be distracted by too many things. I know me, I am easily distracted.

I wfh 2x per wk. Would love to go for 3, but I do work better in the office - made up by the sheer number of hours I put in when working from home (does the work day end?) I also love my cube & the guys I work with! Some folk on the other 1/2 of the office have started sharing cubicals as they alternate the days they wfh & come in. They're good sized cubes, but must get a little cramped on the days they both need to be in office - guess ya gotta love your cube-mate

I've been a telecommuter for years, and there's not another life for me.

Right now I'm in Boston for the weekend... 2000 miles away from home... but I'll still do work tomorrow.

Our office receptionist is a FT telecommuter. She lives 3 states away.

Yea, I don't quite get it either :rotfl:

Depending on workload, I work at home one day a week. We're trying to talk our boss into more days from home, :teeth: but she's not willing at this point. It would be great to go into the office a couple times a week and that's it!
