Tekumi Tei Questions

I have a birthday reservation coming up at Tekumi Tei and had a couple of questions.

1. How do you eat the little crabs in this dish? This may seem a dumb question, but they seem so little and are described as fried, are you supposed to eat the whole thing shell and all? Has anyone eaten this, or something similar? If you find eating the shell isn't your thing, is it possible to pull any meat out of them? I borrowed a picture to show what I am talking about.

This makes me think of eating boiled peanuts. I didn't like the texture of that and I wonder if is similar and if eating the shell makes the whole thing taste very fishy. I have been working on trying seafood in an effort to like it more.I recently discovered that I relatively like crab legs (but not all the work that goes into them ha ha). I won't lie, I am a little scared of these little crabs if I have to eat them whole and am trying to figure out if I should brave this dish.

2nd Question: Is it possible for one person in the party to order the tasting menu while the other person orders off of the regular menu?

I am leaning toward trying to do it this way so we can try more things off of the menu. :)

Thanks in advance!

To answer your first question - you eat the entire crab. You can find these crabs as a bar snack across Asia; you eat them (with shell) along with a beer.

On your second question - I don't know for this restaurant, but most restaurants with a tasting menu require the whole table to eat from it. But I don't know for Tekumi Tei! Hopefully someone who has eaten there will be along soon...

They're softshell crab so a bit different than regular crab, I'm not a huge fan of crab but I did enjoy the softshell ones when I tried them a few months ago.

I've eaten something similar in Las Vegas and they are delicious. No chance you are getting any meat out of there if you don't want to eat the shell but honestly they are so tiny you don't even notice it. For me it ends up being like a crispy crab potato chip but so much better.

I regret googling how to clean soft shell crab. I wanted to know if they cleaned certain parts out (poop) before they fried them. :scared:

@kastoney I am a sucker for all things potato. I think I can wrap my head around it better if I think of it like a potato chip.

I could be wrong but I don't think these are soft shell crabs. Soft shells tend to be blue crabs which are significantly larger and what you generally find in a spider roll for sushi. I've never googled how to clean them but however they do it they taste dang good.

I'm pretty sure what you are referring to from the picture is what disney is calling "toasted crab." I know them as Japanese River Crabs or they are sometimes called Sawagani. Now I will say I do not know how they clean these bad boys either, but they are delicious and tremendously addictive
