Teens rejected from Prom

Does anyone know if the school made it clear what would be accepted and what wouldn't?

If it was clear beforehand and they showed up like this anyway, these girls just performed the time honored (push the envelope on the dress code to get the school to eventually change the dress code - like when we wore pants in 8th grade to school and got suspended! )

If these girls got a real surprise and had no clue or way of knowing they'd be banned, then that really stinks.

Ok, I was expecting something else. I was prepared to defend the school, as most proms do require that the dress at least meet the dress length dress code. While I do think some would have looked better in a different style, I did NOT see anything wrong with what those girls had on.

Exactly. Turned away by the fashion police for a few but otherwise exactly what I would expect to see at a prom. Some were very pretty. Hmmm.

You're all nuts! The school administration was well within their rights to set the dress code however they want, and those girls had to know from the school handbook what they were getting into when they went shopping.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Sorry, I couldn't resist. It's not too often you see a thread about schools and teachers where everyone's in agreement! :teeth:

Those dresses other then being a little low cut looked fine.
It's not their fault that, that is all that gets sold now in the malls.

I actually kind of agree with you though - this kind of drama should have happened pre-prom, not during. Like I said, if these girls were trying to make a protest, good for them.

But if they showed up not having a clue that they'd be banned, either the school had no grounds - if they hadn't been warned - or the girls were really stupid for not knowing the rules.

A couple were borderline (only because I don't think they fit very well), but none that I would deem inappropriate for prom.

My thoughts exactly. The one girl with the white strapless--she wasn't even showing cleavage! (And I thought the dress looking amazing on her!)

Except for the white backless one, and the fact that most of the girls should have gone up a size (especially the pregnant girl) I saw nothing wrong with them.

It appeared that the principal was reading from the CAMPUS dress code. Since students don't routinely wear evening gowns to school, they were probably ALL out of code.

Puhleeze!!! :confused3 What a bunch of schmucks that this school ruined prom for these girls!!! I graduated in 1990 and some of the dresses in these pics were similiar to dresses that where at my prom!! I wore a strapless gown to my prom very similiar to one of the white gowns in the pics, except mine was pale blue! I still have it in my attic. These gowns were conservative compared to the gowns at our local high school prom. I have seen gowns slit practically up to their waist or cut down to almost the belly button, one girl had a backless gown that was so low we were afraid her butt crack was going to show!! I feel bad for these girls who plan for months and primp and preen and spend good money for gowns and hair and nails it's a shame this is something they will never get back.:sad2:

The students are learning a very valuable life lesson and that lesson is: The world is filled with *******s. End of story.

I actually thought some of the strapless ones were very tasteful. Especially compared to what I've seen some girls wear to prom lately. Again, I agree with most of you - the biggest problem was the sizes of some of the dresses.

A few were borderline and a few girls really didn't have the figures to pull off their dresses but I can't say they were bad enough to send them home.

That is my thought too. I wonder what the dress code was? were they told that shoulders had to be covered? (which IMO makes no sense when wearing a formal)

I think there was only one that was a bit too low. It was the second picture, a black dress that was very lowcut and had no straps.

At least one of the girls brought a pic in to show the offending teacher before prom and the dress was approved.

Here is another photo of different girls for those that missed my post yesterday, go to April 16th. It is another photo of different girls, go to April 16th. http://www.nola.com/katrinaphotos/tp/
The girl in the blue dress is the one that had her dress preapproved.

This is what I was thinking. ::yes:: I have never known a campus dress code to apply to a formal event. My public school had a very conservative dress code, but they published a separate dress code for our formal events which was much more lenient.

I could see the dresses being an issue if this was a private school or a Christian/Catholic school but I don't recall seeing that it was. Maybe I should go back and re-read the article. What do they expect these girls to wear, these are the styles out in the stores.

maybe they should have worn this style

Like you I also believe the school was using the Campus dress code. I taught High School for over 12 years in 3 different states and the campus dress code never applied to formal and semi-formal events. I do remember sending out a handout before prom with "basic rules and regs" for the event.

I don't see anything wrong with those dresses, except for maybe one that had the slit go further down than it should have on her chest. Those are regular dresses and not revealing at all.

I think the adminstration needs to get their eyes examined.

I didn't see anything wrong with any of the dresses. My son attends a Conservative Christian school with a strict dress code, and I've seen our girls in dresses very similar to all of those at formal events.

When you posted the thread I was expecting skirt slits up to the hoo ha, necklines down to the belly buttons, and no back with the top of the butt crack showing.

IMHO, this is just a classic example of an adult on a stupid power trip, out to mess havoc with some kid's life --- just because they can.
