Teens missing school for free dining?

I think we can all agree that no matter when we take our vacation, we wish we had more time at Disney! I for one know that even if I had 2 weeks there each year, I'd jump at the chance hit the road again. :drive:

That's more like it everybody! Let's be glad that we have problems like this....when to take our kids on vacation...things could be worse :thumbsup2

I posted a similar thread last night, and someone kindly provided a link to this thread. I have a question specifically for the teachers who have posted here.

We have a trip booked for Dec 5th-Dec 14th. Dec 5th is a PD day for elementary, but not secondary. I didn't realize that when I booked the trip and have just realized that my DD, starting grade 9 this year, will miss 6 days of school instead of 5. I am not really comfortable for her to miss that extra day. Anyway, we could spend a little money and postpone the trip to the Feb 13-Feb 22, and wrap the holiday around the Ontario Family Day and she would miss 4 days. Now my question:

In your opinion(s), if she is going to miss a week of school at some point in the school year, is it better to miss the time Mid Dec (she would miss the second last week before Christmas break, and then be back to school for the last week) OR to miss the time mid Feb? I am not thrilled about spending an extra $400 to change our airline tickets, but I will do it if you think it is best. I am really hoping that there is not a lot of new material being presented in the last couple of weeks before Christmas, but with another full week to go before the holiday, I just don't know what to expect.

I was thinking about my earlier reply on the other thread. I think it may come down to the compliment of courses in each term. The year we pulled our son out I wasn't too worried originally because he was going to have Gym, Religion, Science and English in the term we would be away. As I said earlier I was still blown away with the amount of work we ended up having to do. I got the info from the teachers but reviewed his lessons with him. He had a test the day we returned so I sat next to him on the plane and we reviewed the material for three hours. I must say it was his best performance of the term in Science.

Again this is something which is very dependent on how your daughter is in shcool and which courses she has been assigned to which term. School starts in a little over a week so you should have more info. then to make your decision.

As for new material being taught before Christmas they teach new material right up until about a week before the final exam at the end of January. They tend to not do much teaching the day before Christmas holidays because a lot of people are absent from school. Early February you are into the beginning of the new term. More time to play catch-up but again depending on what her courses are she may miss a critical week and be lost for the rest of the unit being taught.
