I have to agree with just buying a few basic outfits and then waiting until after school starts to buy the rest. When my daughter made this transition, all of sudden, the clothes she thought she wanted weren't the ones she did.
My daughter is 14 and she wouldn't be caught dead wearing Hollister, Aereopostle, etc. Not saying that's true for all kids. . .I see lots of girls in those brands. She prefers Volcom and band shirts from Hot Topic, etc. Some of the local thrift stores get Volcom overstocks. . .score!! I've convinced her that Walmart has some great band shirts. . .and she can buy several when they aren't $20 a piece.
She has a friend that is one of those eclectic, fashionable thrift store shoppers. So now she is getting into that. . .Hey Mom. Goodwill rocks!
