Teen turning 16 during trip

Hi everyone. Loooong time lurker here! :)

So we're driving into Buffalo and flying out from there. Is it problematic if we try and pass through the border with just a birth certificate if the child turns 16 during our trip? My daughter will still be 15, but my niece (who we've taken before no problem) will be 16 by our return date.

Thanks!

I bet it would be an issue and would suggest a passport but only border services knows for sure.

Would your niece not need the passport to get back into Canada (even if US CBP let's her across)? It's been a while since I've looked up the rules (we all have passports and NEXUS), but I thought both sides (Canada and US) required passports for those 16 and older.

I thought so too. My niece is a dual citizen so won't need one to fly within US yet (she'll use her birth certificate). My sister thinks it's a non issue but I think I'm going to insist on a passport.

I guess because she will just have turned 16 on our way back, she assumed they would be lenient. I'm not even sure if we'd be allowed in to be honest. Not worth it I guess

Definitely not worth it to be turned away by picky border guards who have policies to follow. But yay! 16! Important milestone - now celebrate that with a passport ;)

It's not like she won't be getting one within the next year or so anyway, is it? Get her a 10 year passport. She won't have to think about it again.

Edit to add It's a 5 year passport because she's still under 16. Either way not a huge expense considering the price of the trip.

But it's also a cheaper passport. Got DS passport renewed at 15, and it was less expensive than a full adult, good until he is 20. Price actually goes up at 16.

ETA: took a quick look 0-15 is $57 16+ is $120 (or $160 for a 10 year).

I was going to say the exact same thing.
