DD had a major dilemma today. (Or she thought it was anyway). Two old friends wanted her to go to the movies. Her current group of friends wanted her to come over one of their houses. She wanted to spend time with her old friends, but thought her current friends would get mad if she told them she was doing something else.

She ended up going to the movies and telling her friends she couldn't go out tonight. Well, the current friends showed up at my door! Now what do I do? I end up telling them she went shopping with her grandmother - a quick story to cover for her. I don't even know if they bought it, and they're probably already mad at her for ditching them.

I feel like a heel.

Thanks. I need the support. Now, if she had just told them the TRUTH, I wouldn't have been put in this position. But you all know how nasty those teen girls can be.:(

I always tell the truth. If my dd lies then she has to deal with it, not me.

In fact this came up last week. DD wanted to go to her friends house but not talk to her "guyfriend" (on the phone). She comes downstairs and says if "guyfriend" calls, tell him something or another.

I said no, I will tell him you went to your friends. So she calls him back and tells him she is leaving to go to her friends.

No biggie, but it sets up how they behave over the long haul I have found out.

Perhaps sit down with dd and tell her what happened and explain you were uncomfortable with what she did so next time you won't "cover" for her.

This is an example of trying to please everyone. Sometimes, often, this is not possible. Help your daughter to have the courage to assert herself with her friends. She's got the right to do what she wants. Like the previous poster, I wouldn't lie to my daughter's friends, not that I have a daughter!
