ORLANDO, Fla. — A 16-year-old British girl suffered cardiac arrest today after stepping off a Disney World (search) thrill ride.

Today Leanne Deacon felt strange but told her mother she'd quickly recover after exiting Disney World MGM Studios' "The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (search)." The ride depicts a haunted elevator ride.

The Orange County (search) Sheriff's Office says the girl's condition deteriorated so rapidly that her heart stopped beating and she had to be resuscitated by emergency workers.

The girl's condition isn't known, but she's being seen by a neurosurgeon.

Two people have died at Disney World this year. A 4-year-old Pennsylvania boy died June 13 after riding Epcot's "Mission: Space (search)." A 77-year-old Minnesota woman died in February after riding the Magic Kingdom (search)'s "Pirates of the Caribbean (search)." A medical examiner's report said she was in poor health from diabetes and several ministrokes and her death "was not unexpected." The cause of the boy's death remains under investigation.

Hmmm, maybe I should see my family doctor for a checkup before we travel in October.

Although I feel very sorry for those families that have been effected by the sudden and tragic events that have taken place at WDW over the past several months, I hope that people do not mistake these events as having been caused by any ride or through the lack of attention by the staff of WDW.

It just seems sad that the news media pick up on these types of accidents and seem to "hype" them up just because they hapended at WDW, I first heard of this accident on CNN this afternoon. They had footage from a helicopter flying overhead at MGM.

I was at Six Flags over Texas yesterday and saw the paramedics make several runs with their "emergency" golf cart through out the day. The temp's were really bad and not sure if any of these runs yielded in anything as tragic as what is being reported from WDW or not, but then again, not sure if it would make the national news or not anyway.

I'm surprised a helecopter was flyin over. I thought is was a no fly zone since 9:11.

seems like there a bunch of deaths at disney lately!

I suppose the media caught you attention---personally I think there are probably more deaths annually in churches......just a WAG.
In other forums, they are reporting the cardiac arrest took place in the ambulance on the way to the hospital; not at TOT at WDW.

I feel very bad as well for this teenager, but why is it always Disney? Now there will be negative backlash because this come so close after the Mission Space incident. They list these warnings and people should take note. I still do strongly beleive that Disney would not make a ride that would hurt someone and when a ride is not functioning properly they shut it down.

I just hope all goes well for this young girl. :grouphug:

I was thinking the same thing, sure looked as if it was present day footage, but it may have been file footage though.

I don't think it's "always" Disney. I think we HEAR about it because it's Disney. I also think we Disney fans notice Disney stories more. There could be a news report about a death at Six Flags and I probably wouldn't "tune it in" like I would if I heard a news report mention Disney. KWIM?

The girl is undergoing brain surgery. It sounds like a ruptured aneurysm. If so, no way Disney or anyone else could have prevented this. The girl and her family would have had no way of knowing she had this. My prayers are with her.

I used to ride every single roller coaster, I would literally fly to a state that have a new higher roller coaster then.. but then I was 10 years younger and I was not considered OBESE back then. granted am not on any heart pill but I know when to tell myself "STOP DON"T RIDE THIS ONE" I have not been on TOT for years now. As what I have always told my friends.. I rode it ones and my soul was left behind on the last floor. It is in your discrition if it you think you can handle it. My sister wanted to do Mission Space last January.. I was scared but thinking that my sister who dont do rides will do mission space, then I can do it too... after the ride she was miserable, dizzy and nauseated.. I was fine. To make this lkong story short. Nobody force us to ride, not taking WDW sides this rides were tested prior to the opening to the public. Most likely it was tested by average healthy people. So it is really upto us to think it over and decide.

DH read on another forum that she had an aneurysm that her family knew about.

now that is bad....

Whatever the cause I pray that girl is ok. I don't think Disney can prevent people from getting ill in their parks.

Unfortunately things like this happen at theme parks and during recreational activites across the U.S. every day because there are thousands of people with underlying and/or undetected medical conditions that put them at risk. There are some underlying conditions, mainly cardiac arrythmias and seizures, that could escape detection even at autopsy. Thankfully, many people never have any problems and go about their lives uneventfully but sadly some don't and deepest sympathies go out to those families. We'll be keeping this girl and her family in our prayers.

Exactly, as a former paramedic, I can tell you these things happen all the time, you just don't hear about it. If the poor girl were home safe in her bed in England, it most likely would have happened anyway, it just wouldn't be news. Fact is anytime you pump as many people as Disney through attractions, there will statically be medical emergnecies and even deaths. Someone mentioned that more people die in church, jokingly, but the truth is he's right. More people die in churches because more people spend time in churches. Far more people die at ski areas every winter as well, it's just not in the news much.

Personally, when my time is up, there are worse places to be then Disney with my family.

We've noticed on our last few trips that there are always helicopters flying over. I thought they were Disney security. Others have posted that they are sightseeing helicopters, which I have seen advertised in the area.

We took a helicopter tour in 2002. We flew right over both Epcot and DTD.

I beleive that planes cannot fly below 3,000ft within 3 miles of the parks.

I am very sorry for the girl and her family. Thoughts and prayers are with them, :guilty:

This story was the tag for our local news at 11pm and they showed footage from a copter flying over MGM with the quick line, "Another death at Walt Disney World as a young girl suffers a heart attack after getting a ride!" With the usual doom filled voiceover tone and flashy graphic. All I could think was, "Here we go again." I hope that as many people have expressed already that this incident can be put in the right context and not be seen as "the dangers of DISNEY!".

Have a good evening all. I feel like calling my sisters now!
Mike
