Teen attire for dinner?

I have seen a lot of people questioning adults and little kids/boys but what do teen girls wear to dinner? I have a daugher that will be 15 when we cruise and she doesn't own anything nice. She lives in jeans in the fall/winter and shorts in the summer. So I will need to buy her clothes to take along but don't want to spend a ton on items she won't wear other then the cruise. So what do you see teen girls wearing? sundresses? The problem is she is tall and most dresses are short on her which I don't really see as appropriate but I am at a loss for what to get her.

Also I know the dress code says no tank tops but are tank dresses, spaghetti strap dresses ok? or only if you put a sweater on over top? So not even dress tanks are ok? Just wondering if a dressy tank was allowed with nice pants. I wuold assume no but then I don't know why a tank dress would be allowed? (asking this for dressing myself as well as my daughter)

Thanks

The only time it would really matter is on a cruise of seven nights or more and that has a formal night, shorter cruises do not have this.

Teenagers might feel out of place if they do not dress up a bit on those nights but will not be refused entry

My son does wear a suit he is now 15, my daughter a nice dress.

Q: What should I wear to dinner?
A:
The dress code for dinner varies by the venue or theme night of your cruise. In general, most meals are "cruise casual"—no swimwear or tank tops. Most cruises also have special theme nights with optional opportunities to get dressed up for a special family photo. Here's a breakdown of events by cruise itinerary:

On 3-night cruises:

One cruise casual night—No swimwear or tank tops
One pirate or tropical night (deck party)
One "optional dress-up night"—jacket for men, dress or pantsuit for women
On 4-night cruises:

First night is cruise casual—no swimwear or tank tops
One pirate or tropical night (deck party)
One optional dress-up night—jacket for men, and dress or pantsuit for women
Final night is cruise casual—no swimwear or tank tops
On 7-night cruises:

First night is cruise casual—no swimwear or tank tops
One themed night (pirate, tropical or other themed deck party)
3 additional cruise casual nights—no swimwear or tank tops
One formal and one semi-formal night—two great opportunities to dress-up and take advantage of the onboard photography services. Though optional, we recommend: Dress pants with a jacket or a suit for men, and dress or pantsuit for women
Dress code at Palo:

Men: Dress pants and dress shirt (a jacket is optional)
Women: Dress or pantsuit
No jeans, shorts, capri pants, flip-flops or tennis shoes
Dress code at Remy:

Men: Dress pants with jacket (sports or suit jacket) is required—ties are optional.
Women: A dress, cocktail dress, pantsuit or skirt/blouse is required
No jeans, shorts, capri pants, flip-flops or tennis shoes
If you'd prefer more formal attire during the optional dress-up evenings, you're invited to pre-order tailored formalwear rentals and have them delivered directly to your stateroom upon arrival. To learn more, visit Cruiseline Formalwear.

So on cruise casual nights nice jeans would be ok and not out of place for a teen girl? What about colored shorts and a top? My reservation for that is the length of shorts for girls these days.

And are tank dresses ok? It is near impossible to find dresses now for adults and kids that aren't tank/spaghetti straps so do you just put a sweater over?

You'll see lots of sundresses and spaghetti straps. On dress-up optional night you'll see strapless dresses. DCL does keep the dining rooms chilly, so taking a sweater is a good idea.

I'm 15 (14 last time I cruised). I wore shorts on casual nights. I think I even wore some t-shirts. The tank top thing refers to the spaghetti strap kind that usually are pretty revealing. I would say if the straps are wide it's fine. The no swimwear thing is the only hard and fast rule. And my (unsolicited) tip for you is: tell her to wear old prom/formal/semi/homecoming dresses for formal and semiformal nights! She gets to wear a dress she likes again, you don't have to buy any more dresses.

My DD (16) wore shorts nearly every day, but we enforced the same dress code as school - shorts had to be as long as your fingertips when your arms are at your side. My DD is pretty short (only 5'1"), so dress length is never an issue. We found a great "little black dress" for her - don't remember if it was from a yard sale or Goodwill, but she looked wonderful in it on formal night. She wore a similar dress on semi-formal night that she had previously purchased for a school dance. Both dresses were just off her knee in length.

I have no idea how to post a picture, or I would show you. :confused3

My daughter is 13 and lives in yoga pants, jeans and shorts. For our cruise next month (7 nights) I bought her 3 dresses, got them all on sale. 1 from Aeropostale that got the big stamp of approval … this one is her favourite and she has already said she will wear it twice. One is just a simple tank dress, very casual and then I got her one that was dressier but certainly not "prom" type for formal night. Anything dressier and I might as well throw it out after the cruise. The other nights she will either wear a longer pair of bermuda shorts with a cute t or jeans. She is tall for her age and often finds dresses too short too… the one dress is one of the high/low styles which I found to be perfect. So really, I bought her some new, very pretty stuff but didn't spend a lot at all. Have a wonderful trip!

Sun dresses are fine. I would recommend a little bolero sweater or cardigan to go with as it sometimes gets cool in the dining rooms. My DD (13) will be wearing black pants and skirts with some nice blousy shirts and nice T's.

Thanks

When they say "Tank tops", they don't mean everything that is sleeveless, they mean specifically tank tops, the sort that are usually ribbed-knit, like this or undershirts, like this. They just don't want things to be too casual, like you're going to McDonald's or something.

If you're just asking what's allowed, she CAN wear jeans. Even on formal night.

When they say no tank tops, they mean for men. Women are perfectly welcome to wear sundresses, sleeveless or camisole-type tops, covered or not. Maybe not if they are TOO revealing but I haven't seen any woman turned away for not having sleeves on.

I'm 17, and I've been on three cruises as a teenager. When I'm at home, I basically always wear jeans, but I enjoy taking the opportunity to dress up for dinner on the cruises. That being said, I usually wear nicer looking capris (khakis or colored) the first night with a simple top. The other nights, I wear either a casual dress, capris and a top, or a skirt and top. She will not be very out of place if she wears shorts and a t-shirt, but I would recommend she wear something a little nicer if your cruise has a semi-formal or formal night.

I'm pretty sure they are.

I have been on three cruises as a teen (14, 16, 17). I wore jeans on pirate night my last cruise and generally, they don't care.

Just got off the Fantasy today with my family including DD14 (almost 15). Sun dresses, nice shorts, dresses, capris, all are fine. There is a wide range. I didn't see many jeans in the dining room but there probably were some. She can be casual and creative for Pirate Night too. The girls who do dress up for dinner usually change into more casual wear afterwards anyway to hang out in Vibe or with their friends, etc.
