Probably not, but who can say for sure? Not you, and certainly not me.

I'm certainly not condoning his actions of that night; I wasn't there so I can't say what he did or didn't do. I *do* know about all of the things that he has done for his country, and I'm reasonably sure that his family is grieving, so I say Rest In Peace, Mr. Kennedy.

Well, I can pretty well tell you that I have never allowed someone to drown in my car...call it impunity if you wish, but that's a fact of his life based on a choice he made. Yes, I have made bad choices, but they mostly fall along the lines of clothing and restaurant choices. For the big stuff....marriage, family, not letting people die in my car while I swim away to protect my reputation...I've done pretty well.

That being said, I can appreciate that he did some good things for our country through the years & I offer my condolences to his family and friends for the loss of their loved one. I know they are all sad.

I really don't believe in speaking ill of the dead, especially if it has just happened however, it's impossible to avoid in these kinds of threads so I say if you don't like it, ignore it.

It happens in every single thread no matter who the person is; it happened in the Pope's thread, Michael Jackson's thread and so on. It cannot be avoided and no one is immune.

I understand that this was not a perfect man. He made horrendous mistakes in his lifetime, no doubt about that. I do believe in redemption and feel that his work was in part driven by the pain that is recklessness caused others.

It is impossible to remember this man without remembering those dark years but for many of us, remembering his dedication to helping others is important as well. I respect that not everyone is going to weigh his life in it's entirety, but I feel that Chappaquiddick does not negate the good that he did.

It is impossible to remember this man without remembering those dark years but for many of us, remembering his dedication to helping others is important as well. I respect that not everyone is going to weigh his life in it's entirety, but I feel that Chappaquiddick does not negate the good that he did.

Well put. I am not one to make a person a saint when they die. While Ted Kennedy made some huge mistakes in his past, he did work hard to improve the lives of many people in our country. I feel for his family and friends during a difficult time like this.

The surprise is how long he survived with this tumor. My brother died of the same tumor, he only lived 10 months. His Dr. told him the longest survivor lasted 18 months. Kennedy made it 14 months.

As for Jean Kennedy losing two siblings in a month, this is exactly why I don't want to live to be 90, or even 80. I don't want to be the one who has to go to my siblings funeral, year after year, or month after month. I already lost two brother and my dad within 15 months of each other. (both brothers were only in their 40's) What will happen when the rest of us get into the upper 70's and 80's? No thanks.

RIP Mr. Kennedy. You gave it all you had.

i knew he was bad off when he missed his sister's funeral. But because of the efforts in MA to change the law regarding his seat I believe he probably had a few more months left. So did he i guess.

As for the Kopechne's I knew ppl who knew the family even though none of us ever lived up there. I don't believe he should ever have been senator because of that incident. Now he's at St. Peter's door. Most of us aren't all bad or all good, but some things should not be glossed over.

A quick scan of today's boston.com has local stories about a the death of an 11 yo boy by a hit and run driver who fled from the scene and is still being sought...

And a man who was beaten to death by a group of 12 men who had just come from the funeral of a friend killed in a motorcycle accident.

Another guy just committed suicide when they found his missing wife's body in a suitcase - her fingers and teeth removed.

Judges up on drunk driving charges; elderly drivers causing fatal accidents; robberies, shootings, you name it.

How was the week in your neck of the woods?

These people are our brothers and fathers, sons and daughters, sisters and cousins, etc (as are the victims, of course).

Yes, he was wrong. And so are these people (with the exception of the elderly drivers). But to think it can't or won't happen to you or someone you love is sticking your head in the sand.

Let's all hope that if we're ever in a situation in which we find ourselves needing to make a split second moral decision about something, that we choose to make the right one.

Here, here. I think the problem a lot of people have is that it's not that hard for many adults to make the "right moral decision". I stated a few months ago on a thread that I've seen people with far less money, education and privilege as Ted Kennedy pull over to selflessly help someone in need (including me). What made them do the right thing?

Either way, brain cancer is beyond evil and I'm glad he is not suffering from that anymore.
