After experiencing difficulties with his computer, a poor, incognizant user called the system maker's technical support line for assistance...

Technician: Hello. How can I help you today?

Customer: There's smoke coming from the power supply on my computer...

Technician: Looks like you need a new power supply...

Customer: No, I don't! I just need to change the startup files...

Technician: Sir, what you described is a faulty power supply. You need to replace it...

Customer: No way! Someone told me that I just had to change the system startup files to fix the problem! All I need is for you to tell me the right command...

For the next ten minutes, in spite of the technician's efforts to explain the problem and its solution, the customer adamantly insisted that he was right. So, in frustration, the technician responded...

Technician: I'm sorry. We don't normally tell our customers this, but there's an undocumented DOS command that will fix the problem...

Customer: I knew it!

Technician: Just add the line 'LOAD NOSMOKE.COM' at the end of the CONFIG.SYS file and everything should work fine. Let me know how it goes...

About ten minutes later, the technician received a call back from the customer...

Customer: It didn't work. The power supply is still smoking...

Technician: Well, what version of DOS are you using?

Customer: MS-DOS 6.22...

Technician: Well, that's your problem. That version of DOS doesn't include NOSMOKE. You'll need to contact Microsoft and ask them for a patch. Let me know how it all works out...

When nearly an hour had passed, the phone rang again...

Customer: I need a new power supply...

Technician: How did you come to that conclusion?

Customer: Well, I called Microsoft and told the technician what you said, and he started asking me questions about the make of the power supply...

Technician: What did he tell you?

Customer: He said my power supply isn't compatible with NOSMOKE...

ROFL!!!!!

Chris used to do tech support for a small ISP. This sounds like something he would've done!

This is just too funny.

This morning, I talked to one of our end-users who wouldn't click on anything I said to. I finally asked her if anyone in her office could help us. Everyone else was busy or at lunch. I thought about getting into her system through net meeting, but felt that it was easier for me to download the file she needed and to email it to her. That's what I did, and of course, she had trouble opening the file. UGH!

This person has been with the bank longer than I have and has been a bane of my existence since I started. She's a branch manager and in my early days here, she'd call me to calculate a yield for her because she couldn't remember how to use the formula from one day to the next. Add the "stress" of using a computer and WOW have you got one scared cookie.

It all worked out in the end.

Another funny story about my coworker.... she grew up in the house I live in now. It was a double house that the last owner converted to a single-family house. When I told her that I was buying the house, she asked what we were going to do with 6 bedrooms. I told her that there are 5 bedrooms since the remodeling was done and walls were taken down. She kept insisting that there were 6, since there were when she lived there... 3 on each side of the double. She refused to believe I was telling the truth until we brought her in so she could reminisce for awhile in the house after we moved in.

Nice lady, but dumb as dust.

Worst part is Microsoft would have charged the user 25 bucks to tell him that :)

I am reading this while doing phone tech support, a customer is SCREAMING in my ear. He brought a brand new Dell laptop, HIS CHOICE, and it failed after 2 days. They shipped him a refurbished one! He's going on and on about a used computer when he paid for a new one. Apperantly Dell tech support told him to contact their legal department so he needs someone else to vent on.
It's ok he's paying tech support rates to vent :)

LOL :teeth:

I've done tech support before. Sometimes you have to make stuff up because the customers are completely unwilling to believe the real answer. I've never figured out why they call if they think they already know what the problem is.

I am in awe of people who can do tech support.

Funny story, Laura!
