Team Rebel Alliance Marches On...

Welcome James!!!!

Andrea - Congrats on signing up for Weight Watchers. It has worked for me in the past and I sort of do a modified version of weight watchers now. Good luck with it.

Is anyone here on twitter? I find myself slightly obsessed with twitter. If anyone wants to connect over there I find I can interact quicker over there because I can do it right on my phone. look me up over there: 7sevenseven7

Jane - I am doing WW. I started about the 2nd week of January and tonight when I weighed in, I reached my 10% goal! I was really happy because I have had a week where I wasn't real careful. Here are the things that I have to do to have the diet work for me: drink TONS of water (I swear I slosh as I walk around), record all my food (even if I don't figure the points, I still log it so that I can see what I am eating), wear "skinny" clothes (seriously...if I am in fitted clothing, I feel like I have a better attitude now and want to continue to do well) and exercise EVERY day. I do not take any days off on the weeks I do really well. If I think of other things, I will post them.

I don't twitter yet. I just got into FB, I can barely keep up on all the WISH threads I try to follow. I am also using the Daily Mile website and post things there. Sometimes I use time on the computer as my reward for doing what I know I need to do (exercise or eat right). I get a lot out of all the sites I use but I don't know how I could keep up with any more. :upsidedow

Liam - I am just amazed at how quickly you became a marathon runner...and a good one at that. It is funny thinking that if I do a half marathon I may want to do a full one...I can't see it at this point but then again, if someone had asked me 3 months ago if I would run...I would have laughed at the thought! It is amazing what a little time and training can do for a person!

James - Welcome! I am fairly new to the team as well. Love all the support and advice I get from here though! :thumbsup2 Sounds like you have a lot of training and scheduled runs going on - that is great! I am still trying to figure out my races for the summer. My big goal is the Princess 2011 with a good friend of mine. She is the one who got me started on this running journey.

Tiffany - You are right...I should just try and if I have to walk, at least I tried! The 7K was a bit over 4 miles. I think if I plan on adding a bit more each week I could make it. I am going to seriously consider this and try and lay out a plan.

I am so sorry to hear about your feet with the flippers! That just sounds so painful! I hope that your feet heal quickly.

Andrea - Thanks again for making the logos! I would love to hear what others think about choosing what ever one we want or if we want to choose just one as a team. I just think they are great!

I will be following you on dailymile. I have been posting my runs - it was so easy because I can sync my Garmin to it. I do love the accountability of having people "check up on me".

I am working at finding a program for the half marathon and trying to figure out where I am at in the plan. When I look at most of them, I would say that I am easily comfortable in the 5th or 6th week of training.

I just looked at my running log tonight and realized that today I hit 100 miles run since February 1st! :yay: That is a huge amount when I think about it. I think I can handle the 1/2 if I just keep up the training.

Great job on joining up with WW again! I have done it before and I am so happy that I am doing it again because it is what works for me. I am really feeling great at reaching my 10% today. I know there is still a long ways to go but I am moving and it is good!

AFM - I think I have kind of said it all. :rotfl: Today I did run 2 miles in 20 minutes flat on my lunch. It really felt good. I decided to do it because I was so stressed today. Since my running clothes were with me, I just thought that I should get out and run. It was a really good choice and even my students said that they thought I should run more often on my lunch! :lmao:

Yikes! Could you buy your own personal set of flippers that would fit you better? That's terrible to have such a rough time because of that. Hope they heal quickly.

These are my own flippers, I bought the correct size, but they slide around on my feet!

:welcome: jwalker! We're so glad you've joined us!

You will do great at the Goofy! You've got plenty of time to train, plus with a half and a marathon under your belt, you'll know exactly what to expect.

Please jump right in and post when you have anything to say. :thumbsup2

For some reason, I just decided that now was the time. I feel ready this time.

I am on twitter, too, my username is disney_mommy. I don't know if you would like their sense of humor, but 2 of my favorite tweeters are Wil Wheaton (wilw) and Jimmy Fallon (jimmyfallon).

In case anyone is interested, I am also on Facebook. My name there is Andrea King or disney_mommy (I know, I'm not very original...).

Jen, those are excellent tips for WW, I will keep those in mind. Congrats on hitting the 10% goal! That's wonderful! :cheer2:

I think you are absolutely ready to sign up for that race with your friends. If you are already in your 5th or 6th week of training, you are good to go! And 100 miles since February 1?! That's awesome. I do believe we can call you an actual athlete now!

I tried to do some exercise during my lunch hour, but when I get sweaty my hair curls and frizzes up, then I can never get cool. Then I'm grumpy for the rest of the day. Not a pretty picture!:lmao:

These are my own flippers, I bought the correct size, but they slide around on my feet!

It would seem to me that they could mnake a flipper that fit tight so it wouldn't slide around and blister. I bet that turns a lot of people off of swimming. Well, hope your tootsies get healed up soon.

Everyone, I added some info. to the first post. A little background on W.I.S.H plus some links for our team. As always, if anyone has suggestions or ideas, please speak up!

Jen: Congrats on your race. That is a great time! I am really impressed. I bet you could do good in a half marathon. If you are already running a 7K you are well on your way.

Goulishgirl: The swimming sounds great for you. I am impressed with the work that must go into that. Keep it up! Sorry about the flippers! Have you tried to wear booties? I wear them with my scuba fins and it helps a ton to keep the skin of my feet happy.

Diane: glad the weather is getting better out there. It is nice when Spring comes!

Liam: that is an amazing (and Crazy) race. Very impressive. Congratulations!

Andrea: Sorry about your weekend. That sounds so hard. I am very sorry. I do love the logos! They are really good. ( I may look you up on Facebook.)

Jane: congrats on losing 3 pounds. I hope to join you as a loser and not a gainer soon. I am not on twitter, but I am on facebook and spend enough time on that!

James: Welcome to the group! I am a half walker myself. I could never get the form quite right to be a true race walker, but I am always in awe of people that can. I love it! Welcome to the Rebel Alliance!

AFM: I am slowly (very slowly) getting back into the swing of things. I have probably gained 5 pounds since my half marathon, because I suddenly became a couch potato! I don’t know how it happened, but I am fighting back. I did get on the treadmill last night. And it was hard to do! The weather is much nicer here than it has been in quite a while, but it always seems to be raining or really close to it by the time I get home from work. That puts a damper on my plans to go and enjoy the sunshine. But I decided I was going to exercise tomorrow – No Matter What!

My husband went to a meeting, and I got on the treadmill. I am trying out a new pair of shoes. I think they are a little too snug, so I will have to exchange them. But I am so excited to have new shoes! Crazy, but true.

Andrea - I just have to say that I went back and looked at the first post with all the information you have there and...WOW! Thanks so much for all the background, all the helpful links and everything else you do to keep our team organized! :cheer2:

AFM - Today I had thought I would bike to work for some cross training (it would have been a bit over 6 miles). I got everything ready, loaded up my bike and discovered I have a flat tire. No clue how it happened as I had just been out on it a few days ago but now it is going to go in to the bike shop. I guess it was meant to be because my bike really needs a tune up and they are also going to put the mount on for my Garmin. I have been excited to have the kit that will keep track of my biking but could not figure out how to mount it properly. I am not going to run tonight since I have run 4 days in a row. Instead, I am planning on doing some strength training which I am always trying to avoid even though I know it will help me as a runner.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! :)

Today, I have come to the realization that I have over trained for the half marathon, which is less than two weeks. I have been training with my local runners club, which is the club that is hosting the half marathon. The training schedule has been a good one and compares nicely with the good ones I found online. Anyway, I guess I do not know my body as well as I thought I did. This was a newbie moment for me that I can learn from.

As for my half marathon, I suspect that my goal finishing time of 3 hours will have to wait for another half and instead, finish the event and have fun. I can comfortably maintain a 14:30 pace at the moment and I am confident that I can make it to the finish. There is one more long run this weekend and I will take it easy. I hope by slowing down and cutting my mileage a bit, maybe it will put some life back into my legs. No matter what happens, I am going to have fun! :)

Hi everyone!

Just checking in with 3 miles tonight. It's beautiful here in NY and so it just makes running that much easier.

Jen - Thanks for the tips and congrats on your 10% goal. I drink so much water I feel like I'm floating too. At work I always feel like i'm in the kitchen or the bathroom. I never seem to be at my desk.

Ghoulishgirl - I'm sorry about the flippers. I don't have any suggestions as I've never worn flippers before. Ouch! Hope it gets better.

Going to try to watch survivor before bedtime. have a great night.

These are my own flippers, I bought the correct size, but they slide around on my feet!

Tiffany - Are there sock things that you can use in the flippers that would help? How are your feet doing today? I hope to hear that they are feeling better!

I tried to do some exercise during my lunch hour, but when I get sweaty my hair curls and frizzes up, then I can never get cool. Then I'm grumpy for the rest of the day. Not a pretty picture!:lmao:

Andrea - I have to say that when I ran the other day that I did get really sweaty and a bit gross. I don't really care though and my 4th grade students didn't care either. They were so cute...they lined up out on the playground waiting for me to come back (it was recess time) and cheered me on as I returned to school.

Jen: Congrats on your race. That is a great time! I am really impressed. I bet you could do good in a half marathon. If you are already running a 7K you are well on your way.

My husband went to a meeting, and I got on the treadmill. I am trying out a new pair of shoes. I think they are a little too snug, so I will have to exchange them. But I am so excited to have new shoes! Crazy, but true.

Manda - Thanks for the compliments! The support here is great and keeps me going!

Oooh, new shoes! That is exciting! I bought my first pair of running shoes in January and already want another pair. These are looking a bit rough and are falling apart. I think they are so trashed because I ran outside in the winter - snow, slush, ice, etc. I hope you enjoyed your workout with the new shoes!!!

James - I am always worried about over training as a newbie. I have done it several times (in fact right now I think I have done it a bit). I think it is great that you are going to take it easy...do what your body is capable of...and just enjoy the race!

I drink so much water I feel like I'm floating too. At work I always feel like i'm in the kitchen or the bathroom. I never seem to be at my desk.

Jane - I am the same way! I don't even have to say anything any more...my students all know if I have to leave the classroom it is to go to the bathroom! :rotfl2: I have been pretty honest with my students about my diet, my fitness plan and my goal to become healthier. I think they are all learning a lot as we go and it is fun to watch some of the changes they are making. Many of my students are now packing healthier lunches, they talk about exercising on the weekend with friends and they are always supporting me and asking how it is going. It is a great group of kids.

AFM - My exercising today has been filled with "I planned on doing this...." but I did nothing. The bike ride was a bust with the bad tire. Brought my bike into the shop because it needed some other work and I found out it is going to take 10 days to get it back because they have so much work. I thought I would do some strength training but I have decided that after 4 straight days of running that my body is just tired. I am going to skip it and have already scheduled time in my day for a good cross training workout tomorrow. So, no miles to report and no workout to talk about. I will be better tomorrow.

Have a great night everyone!
Jen

Jen – I wish I would have worried more about over training. :) Anyway, my friends keep telling me to take it easy and everything will workout fine on race day. It always helps to have optimistic friends. :)

BTW, I think you should do the half marathon. I have had a lot of fun training for my first one and I really enjoy the challenge. I suspect that you will feel the same.

Jen: Sorry about the flat tire. That isn’t fun. My DH wants to get a Garmin with all the bike stuff. I use one for running, so I guess I have to let him get one too. He is excited about it.

James: I walked my first half marathon (the Disneyland last year) and finished at exactly 3:00! It was awesome. You will be surprised how your legs will get new life during the race. Races are just more fun than training. I don’t know what it is, but I have done better in the two races than I ever thought I could! But you are right, most important thing is to have fun.

Jane: Congrats on the 3 miles. Glad the weather is treating you well.

As for Me: I am on day 3 of my current food tracking streak. I was up to 2 weeks not long ago, but I got sick and fell off the wagon for a week. But I am back to tracking that. I played racquetball last night with my DH and Dad. It was fun, a good way to add a little exercise. It was helpful because we had an assigned time and I couldn’t talk myself out of it (like I have been with exercise lately). Afterward we were running all over town to hardware stores. We were trying to fix a small problem with our house that is turning into a big problem. I guess it is true you never know what is really going on behind your walls until you cut a hole in them and look. :scared1:

I have a long day today, I have to stay late to attend a Board meeting. So I should be here until after 8. That makes for a 12 hour day. Don’t know if I will be walking after or not. If not, I will be back to it on Friday!

I think it is so awesome that this group has gone from people barely posting to so many people posting I can't keep up. :D I am hoping that soon I will have the time at work that I can start doing personal responses but at this point that is not the case. Ran 5 miles this morning. This was my second run where I tried going to a 4:1 run:walk interval. I did 3:1 for the last year in my training for MCM and Goofy. I was able to drop 45 seconds per/mile from my last attempt to get my fastest run in recent history. Hopefully I can keep that pace up. Yay!

Andrea: Sorry about your weekend. That sounds so hard. I am very sorry. I do love the logos! They are really good. ( I may look you up on Facebook.)

AFM: I am slowly (very slowly) getting back into the swing of things. I have probably gained 5 pounds since my half marathon, because I suddenly became a couch potato! Manda, thanks for the kind words. I'm feeling better today than I was yesterday, and much better than the day before... Now I am remembering all of the silly or funny things Murphy did and can smile about them. I'm blocking out the end and especially the last day of his life. I'd rather remember the good things.

That is the exact same thing that happened to me, Manda! For the first few days after the Princess, I was "resting after the big race and replenishing all those carbs I used up." Next thing I knew, it's been weeks and I'm right back to my old ways! But I think I have a good start on getting back, with joining WW and all. I just need to get back on the exercise bandwagon.

I love when it's new shoe time! I do all sorts of research pnline and find recommendations based on my feet and all that. Then comes the finding of the shoe and the first few walks with the new shoe. Very fun. (And probably a little sad to outsiders:lmao:.)

Andrea - I just have to say that I went back and looked at the first post with all the information you have there and...WOW! Thanks so much for all the background, all the helpful links and everything else you do to keep our team organized! :cheer2:

Jen, I am having so much fun getting all that stuff together. I practically live for that kind of thing. I'm trying to come up with more helpful ideas! I can't stop! :rotfl:

Sorry your bike wasn't cooperating with you. But that's great that you did something else instead. I would have been very tempeted to just say forget it and sit down on the couch. At least you get the Garmin mounted professionally, that's the silver lining.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! :)

James, I think that's a great attitude to have about your race. I am all for having the first race be totally fun and noncompetitive. That way, even if your time is the slowest ever, you had fun and you have nowhere to go but up! Make pr on the next race! Continue to take it easy, and good luck. :thumbsup2

Hi everyone!

Just checking in with 3 miles tonight. It's beautiful here in NY and so it just makes running that much easier.

Glad to hear the weather is nice in NY. Usually you only hear about the bitter cold or the sweltering heat. Here in Virginia it's been really pleasant the past couplle of days, with just a slight cool breeze every once in a while. It won't last long, though.

Andrea - I have to say that when I ran the other day that I did get really sweaty and a bit gross. I don't really care though and my 4th grade students didn't care either. They were so cute...they lined up out on the playground waiting for me to come back (it was recess time) and cheered me on as I returned to school.

Jen, it sounds like you have an amazing group of students, and they have an amazing teacher! I love that they were lined up to greet you when you came back from your run. And you notice a difference in their habits already? You guys are very lucky to have each other. I bet this is something they remember for a long time.

Are you keeping track of your shoe mileage? I understand shoes should be replaced every 300-600 miles (depending on your weight, the surface you use and other factors). Maybe it's time to retire yours? I have a few different pairs I rotate through (one for longer walks, one for shorter, one for dirt and mud...) and when I log my miles, I always note the pair I used. It's an easy way for me to keep track.

As for Me: I am on day 3 of my current food tracking streak. I was up to 2 weeks not long ago, but I got sick and fell off the wagon for a week. But I am back to tracking that. I played racquetball last night with my DH and Dad. It was fun, a good way to add a little exercise. Manda, keeping track of food is so hard! In the past, when I tried WW, I would eat something I shouldn't so I wouldn't write it down. Then it was like, well I didn't write that down, so I might as well not write this down. Then it was, I might as well call today a loss and start over tomorrow. So that was my excuse not to eat right for the rest of the day. It's all about the mind tricks we play.

I've never played racquetball, but I would like to try it some day. Those balls zooming by scare me to death, though. Have you heard the Brian Regan bit about racquetball being the only sport where, simultaneously, you can be looking at the ball, and it'll hit you in the back of the head at 90 miles an hour? So funny!

What's going on with your house? I hope it is an easy fix after all.

I think it is so awesome that this group has gone from people barely posting to so many people posting I can't keep up. :D I am hoping that soon I will have the time at work that I can start doing personal responses but at this point that is not the case. Yay, Katie, on the time increase!:cheer2: We look forward to the time when you can hop on here and share some of your experience, you half-marathon fanatic!

Goulishgirl: The swimming sounds great for you. I am impressed with the work that must go into that. Keep it up! Sorry about the flippers! Have you tried to wear booties? I wear them with my scuba fins and it helps a ton to keep the skin of my feet happy.

Tiffany - Are there sock things that you can use in the flippers that would help? How are your feet doing today? I hope to hear that they are feeling better!
I don't know if there's time in class to put the booties on. He gives the kick set and we're off. The zoomer fins are for size 5 to 7 and I wear a 7 so you would think they wouldn't slide too much. They are already a little difficult to get on over my heel, but I think I will look into the booties though.

As for Me: I am on day 3 of my current food tracking streak.
I'm also keeping a food journal, today is day 4. It really does help me stay on the straight and narrow. I would like to take off the 6 pounds I seem to have picked up somewhere. Unfortunately, tomorrow my boss and I are going to lunch to celebrate our 12 year anniversary of working together. We're having italian at Maggiano's. My plan is to only eat half of my lunch and then eat a salad for dinner. Swimming tomorrow morning then will walk in the afternoon to get some extra activity. Ran this morning on the treadmill.

James - I am going to do a half marathon soon! I love hearing how people train for them and have been doing tons of reading up on it. DH is very hesitant about it (he runs with me) but I just think we need to try it. If we don't do the one in June, I am determined to find another this summer! :thumbsup2

Hello Katie! Glad you posted. I have been thinking about how to combine a run:walk to my routine. It was good to read how you did 3:1 to start and how you are now at 4:1. Great job on your improved time! I might have to give something like this a try. I would like to say that I would run a whole half marathon but realistically, I think it would be a run:walk sort of deal to start with.

Tiffany - I have to get going on my food journal again. I had been so good about it but the past 2 days I have been really bad about it. I bet if you keep on tracking you will lose those 6 pounds in no time!

Andrea - You putting together all the stuff for our team sounds like my obsession with building a website for our DCL cruise group. My website is huge - pages and pages! Once I get going, I can't really stop and suddenly the simple page has become a huge web site!

I was so horrible about exercise and diet these past 2 days. I am probably going to be paying for it at my weigh in tomorrow. Lets just say we have had a couple of really stressful days but our Spring Break starts after school tomorrow so I am ready to get some things done! I do love teaching and my students are amazing but it is time for vacation!

I am going to consider going to get new shoes over break as well. Mine have about 150 miles on them but like I said...lots of running in ice, snow, slush and other winter conditions. I will still use them for a while but I think I will think about starting to break another pair in.

Hope everyone is having a great night!
Jen

Jen: I actually started out a 2:1 and even did a run or two at a 1 1/2:1. The trick is to try a couple intervals on for size and find one that really works well for you.

To those of you that keep a food journal. How do you do it? Do you use something online? I need to start keeping track of what I eat. I am doing pretty good with exercise now, but have never been good at eating right. It seems like whenever I try I eat worse. But now I'm starting to get frustrated that I know I'm building muscles but I want to do something about that layer of fat around my middle that is hiding them. I just had a bowl of Lucky Charms and a chocolate chip cookie with a diet pepsi for breakfast.

I use WW online. A little easier than some of the other food tacking journals, but doesn't break down the food so you can see exactly how much of certain nutrients you get. I used calorieking.com for a while which made it really easy to see exactly what you were eating. Both of those are paid services. I have also heard good things about Sparkpeople.com and MyFitnessPal.com, but have no personal experience with either of those. Both of those are free from what I understand.
