Rachel and others. We had some good therapy sessions today and I sent this letter to the school principal (after some corrections):

Mrs. xxxxx,

I wanted to give you a few things that I want to address in our conference just in case there needs to be some research.

1. An IEP for xxxxxxx. Since he was diagnosed with ADHD, I haven't seen any type of IEP put in place for him. He is entitled to have his needs and learning style accommodated, yet all I hear from Mrs. xxxx and teachers prior is that he just seems to be a problem because he can't act like a soldier like the other kids. I do understand all the pressure that is put on schools to perform, but a lot of kids are getting lost. What is the point of No Child Left Behind if kids who need other learning choices are not helped? I am very frustrated and I have sided with the system for too long. It is time for me to speak for my child. I feel that there is mold and those who don't fit that mold are said to need medication. I've heard the same argument for three years that "I have 20 other kids to worry about, I can't spend this much time on your child." I have come to feel that it is all about numbers and meeting quotas just to get bonuses.

2. Another concern is the grading system. I just don't understand it as I am a very concrete facts person. On a recent math test, xxxxx had 25 of 26 correct. That is 96% which is an A and that says he is extending beyond grade level, which should be a 4. Yet, he received a 3 meaning meeting grade level, in other words, "average." So this is saying that he did good, but not great and to be great you have to be perfect. Wow, talk about pressure. As a result, I have become numb, for lack of a better word, to this whole grading system. I'm to the point that I don't put too much stock in the report cards because they aren't a true measure of the performace as it is really up to the teacher. Two children can have the same test results, but get different grades because of the teacher's perspective.

3. I am very concerned with Mrs. xxxx's approach to xxxxxxx. He is a child who needs positive reinforcement, which I shared with her in September. But what I am hearing is that she criticizes him openly and often questions him about his medication in front of other students. Why is she even discussing this topic with him? What if we chose not to medicate? She is so quick to call home if we miss his meds or she will send him to Mr. xxxxxx. Which reinforces the message that if you don't take your meds you can't focus, and if you can't focus you are bad, and you go see Mr. xxxxxxx and all the kids know that you only go see Mr. xxxxxxx if you are bad. He was in tears last Tuesday because he would be a day without his meds and he was afraid of what Mrs. xxxx was going to say to him. This is completely unacceptable and why I want xxxxxxxx removed from her class.

4. My last concern is the fact that Mrs. xxxx did not even read xxxxxxxx file before our last conference. She was complaining about him having all 3's on his report card. If she had bothered to read his file, she would have found this to be a 300% improvement and would have shared in our elation for him to have come this far. Instead her comments were, well, he could do better, and she made him aware of this. She should have been praising his accomplishments. She went on to suggest that xxxxxxxx wasn't happy and since my responses didn't satisfy her, she pushed the issue. She had him see the nurse, counselor, and psychologist; all things we have already done. Why was she wasting time going over all this again? Is she had just read his file.... Since it was suggested by the school nurse that he was depressed and his meds were making things worse, we had no choice but to stop meds and seek further help. Since we could not snap our fingers with an immediate result, Mrs. xxxx took it upon herself to call a social worker on us. In the meantime, our pediatrician said that if depression was brought into the picture, they could no longer give xxxxxxxx meds and we needed a psychiatrist. Since that day, we had to find one who we were comfortable with, accepts our insurance, is taking new patients, and has openings. Our appointment is Feb. 9; the soonest available. In the meantime, Mrs. xxxx has been very frustrated and would give xxxxxxxx a hard time about his meds. We did have one more refill, so I did so for the testing. But what if he is truly depressed and his meds make it worse? What if he hurts himself?

i think it sounds very articulate and to the point! i'm sorry you're having such problems with the school. i'm sure you know i have 2 kids with high functioning autism ( dd 7 and ds3). they have a lot of the same issues as your son. i agree that you have to take a stand against the system and speak up for you children. it sounds like the teacher is not a good fit for him. i don't think the teacher will change. can you request a different teacher? with my daughter, they will actually take the time to figure out which teacher would best fit her needs and personality. doesn't sound like they took that into consideration at all for your son.

let me know if you have any questions. i may not know the answer , but i will try to help you. i'm still learning the in's and out's of the school system, but have learned a lot in the last 2 years. , rachel

:rotfl2:

Why not?

Ask away. ;)

Okay, I'll ask... Jen, what happened?? Tell us all the details! Enquiring minds want to know!

In short.

I learned I want different.

I think sometimes, people come into your life to teach you a lesson. Maybe to even teach you what you DON'T want in your life.

Is that cryptic enough for ya'?

:lmao:

Troy is a wonderful man. But, he is not for me.

The good thing is...I know exactly what I do want in my life.

This was very difficult for him. But, I think it says something equally as important when I say that it wasn't as difficult for me.

:)

gotta go give the kids a bath. may be back later. have to watch er at 10p!!

Sister, you just told the story of my marriage! Never again will I compromise or settle for anything other than exactly what I want.

S'latey, well done and go get 'em! :thumbsup2

Question. Baylie's dance team is selling popcorn. The flavors are cheddar, white cheddar, cheddar and salsa, chocolate, caramel, and vanilla.
If we take the popcorn, we have to pay for it whether we sell it or not since the school prepays for it.
My MIL said she could sit out front of her restaurant next Saturday and sell the popcorn if she wants. What flavors should I get? I've heard the caramel is amazing.

I would go with the basics butter, cheese, and carmel. At least I think that's what would sell around here. Will you shippopcorn::

Just back from wal-mart. Blech. #2 wants to give out plants as his take away thank you gifts...no goodie bags, no pinata, but cactus. :confused3 I can't find little plants anywhere. Wal-mart was a last resort, but nothing there either.

WHat about instead of the actual plants you get them each a little placstic pot, some seeds, and a baggie of dirt and let them start something from seeds. Some sort of flower, or a tomato plant, or something like that?

Back from WDW and the DCL cruise to St Croix. :woohoo: It was 75 to 80 degrees everyday on the cruise and today in Baltimore it is 22 degrees going down to 0 tonight!

Welcome back!:goodvibes

Ok sheesh, don't check in this morning and ya'll go and start a new thread.

All my fault:rolleyes1

:wave2

To warm up some of the cold Fockers and for V and those who wanted to see. :goodvibes

Beautiful Z:goodvibes

I'm here. :cheer2:

:woohoo:

I 'm fine I'm fine. Just a little bruised up. *note to self...girl fights are bad*

We had our taco pie for dinner and now a quick Wii tennis match for the men in the house, and the Muppet Show before bed. :thumbsup2

D has to leave early in the morning, so I might be back. If not, have a great night!

Love the Muppet Show. WHat season ar eyou watching?

Yeah, you do, Janet! I'm happy to see my number coming up these days. :rolleyes1

Gee thanks. Love you too T:rolleyes:
On another note, our dinner discussion further proved the accuracy of Kate's article. DS9, who wasn't very hungry because if his meds, started reading the book of world records. He asked what country had the longest coastline and was shocked by the answer. Anyone, anyone? Somehow New Zealand entered the conversation and DH mentioned that the toilets flush backwards. Well, this peeked DS9's interest as to why and then blah blah southern hemisphere blah blah and Indonesia on the equator that just flushes with straight down woosh and then DS9 is running for the globe to see where these countries are and the equator and all the inlets islands that make Canada have the longest coastline. SEE, boys just need teachers to speak their language: it's all about potty mouths. We were able to fit geography and a reduced fat alfredo lesson into supper. :thumbsup2

Jimmy does this all the time. We will talk about aplace and he will go grab the map so we can show him where it is. Or about a planet he will go grab a poster of the solar system hanging in his room!

so the movers are in ohio right now with my husband packing everything up. i think they're about done. tomorrow they will load the truck and deliver on sat or sun! finally, we can live normally again! actually, it hasn't been too bad. it's kinda fun making dinner together with my parents. they'll be right next door, so hopefully we can continue to have family dinner few times a week.

so , what's up with everyone??

Hey Rachel. Sounds like you are all settling in!:goodvibes HOw are the kids adjusting?

Exactly! When we were studying whales (last year) we read that whales can hear sounds up to 200 miles away. So, I told the kids that if you farted in an ocean every whale within 200 miles would be laughing. We cracked up and to this day, they can all tell you that fact. :lmao:
Hey- it works!

=========================================================

Evening all. Jimmy is finally in bed, but I have a feeling it is going to be difficult getting him up for school tomorrow:sad2: It's cold. The high tomorrow is going to be awful and the wind chill even worse. They won't close schools here for the cold!:sad2:

Hey Rachel. Sounds like you are all settling in!:goodvibes HOw are the kids adjusting?

:

kids are doing great!! i'm super relieved!

they cancelled school here for tomorrow already d/t the cold. completely different from ohio. we could have a foot of snow and as long as the roads were plowed, it's off to school. here, they cancel for the tiniest bit of snow.

Hey guys! Had a lot to read but I'm all caught up now!

I think it is so funny that schools are getting canceled down there due to the cold. Our schools never get canceled unless there is a major disaster or power outage. Then again we are tough Canadians we were born for the cold. :lmao: Just kidding, I think my years of living in California and Virginia Beach have ruined me, I just can't take the cold. I have to have the heat cranked up and wear three layers of flannel when at home. :lmao:

I'm hungry. :guilty:

Of course, if school is cancelled, all plans go out the window.

Feeling your pain there... I hate cancellations. I can deal with delays.

We were able to fit geography and a reduced fat alfredo lesson into supper. :thumbsup2

We've had Season One forever, but Dr. Belle bought us Season Two for Christmas. :thumbsup2

I think it's a matter of preparation - if you can't plow, well, you have to do what you have to do.

;) We don't cancel for cold. Never did in IL, either. :confused3 Well, except that one "retroactive" time in college...

Oh Fockers...there's no way I'm gonna be able to catch up on any of this. So let's just pretend I know what's going on, shall we...

Lindsey's school was cancelled today because of snow last night and she's cancelled for tomorrow due to freezing cold temps. She's off on Monday due to MLK day. This is going to be a very llllllllooooooooonnnnnngggggggg weekend! I did see a local community college was offering some MLK activities on Monday though so we might go and check them out.

Lindsey had a visit at her peds this afternoon for her 6 year visit and then to talk with her behavior issue. She is a normal healthy 6 year old. :) Her stats were 50 pounds even, 46 1/4" tall, 20/20 vision in both eyes and her she passed her hearing exam. The doctor is referring us to see a family psychologist because she is thinking Lindsey is showing signs of ADD/ADHD. I did tell her about the divorce and she said that may be having an affect on her behavior as well. So, she'll be tested and go from there on what needs to be done. Her father of course didn't even bother to call and ask how things went and I don't plan on calling him. Like I told him the other night...he can either get on board with this and get Lindsey the help she needs or he can get off the train and I didn't want to hear any complaints coming from him for what I chose to do then.

That's about it for us. ER is on in the background and I'm having trouble concentrating on this and that. So I'm going to watch.

Night All! :)

Ok I just watched The Wrestler. WOW. That movie was really good. It actually really freaked me out, it is exactly how wrestling really is behind the scenes. It was like watching what my life was like (the things i saw mostly not the things i did) for the 6 years I wrestled. Really bizarre to me. It really hit home. Not to mention that 3/4 of the wrestlers in the movie are people I know personally. I kept yelling out "thats so and so" "Hey I know him!", KC was amused.

Great movie tho!

Tomorrow we are watching Choke & Benjamin Button!

Hope you have a great night all! Stay warm!!!

OK going back to catch up after a cold night at work! Dang customers kept opening the door to come in and buy stuff!!

 jen. so what do you want in a man??? you have lot of virtual friends that could hook you up!! it could be called f-harmony!!!

I'll know when I find the partner I want to share my time with.

Problem is...Jen is picky. ;)

Sister, you just told the story of my marriage! Never again will I compromise or settle for anything other than exactly what I want.

Can I get an Amen? ;)

As long as you are happy:hug:

I am. Thanks.

I think it does, too, and you know we only want your happiness. Love you!

Awwwww...

You guys have me feelin' all verklempt.

It's sorta been a rough night here. And your hugs and love have made me feel better.

*sniff*

 to you Jen.. I know why but I havent gotton that far yet. then the DIS went wonky and now the smileys are all screwed up..

Well... I am fond of you. So, be happy. And I'm glad we could help.

*************************************
Yep, couldn't get on the DIS for a while, and now the smileys are weird. I hate when they do this. :headache:

I amused myself on FB for a while. Suddenly my h.s. friends have all shown up, and while there are people I am thrilled to see (remember when I was in the wedding? - gosh, nearly 2 years ago now? She's there...) but also my first love, who is bald. I've been in touch with him for years, so it's fine, but still. Now he knows I'm drinking wine. Weird, you know? :rotfl:

I don't have much tomorrow except volunteering for a bit. D's leaving early (a secret :cool1: as he's been home since 12/22 and I am ready for a "self" night...) and that's about it.

Sleep well, and good morning, Jo! :goodvibes:
