Team 6 - Team Ohana - Check in and introduce!

Sounds like May was busy for everyone! DD15 finished school last week, DOOM's job (hopefully) will settle down July 1st and DD5 will have her recital in a couple weeks, then things will settle down a bit around here.

Debra...hope the big move is going okay. I prefer unpacking to packing so I hope you're on your way to the end.

Maria...I used to love Fantasy Island. I remember watching Love Boat at 9pm then Fantasy Island was on afterward. And Ricardo was sooo cool when he was Khan! My current in-laws are less irritating than half of my previous set, but still have their moments. MIL is just so different from the strong, independent women with whom I was raised...sometimes it's hard to be understanding.

Jeanne...sorry to hear Jim couldn't stay on. Hope it wasn't something we said.
I'm glad I'll have only #1 and #2 to worry about when they're in college. Hope the car is okay.

Corinna...congrats on the purple belt! I thought about karate for XT, but was afraid I'd hurt myself. We have a dojo nearby that's owned by one of my patients. I think I would enjoy it but have been looking more at Tai Chi because it seems gentler.

Shell...did he tell you why you'd only be able to do 2 or 3 miles at a time? Just curious if it's a range of motion issue or long-term damage issue? My podiatrist says I shouldn't be able to run at all (glad no one told me that before I started :rolleyes1 ) I do think I have a limit to what I can do long-term which may mean I'll never do another full, but I can comfortably do the half. I'm planning to see an ortho at some point to answer the long-term damage question.

Julie...there's tons of plans out there you can modify to suit your needs. I followed MFM religiously for the first couple years, but am just playing it by ear now. My new mantra that you'll see me repeating is build up your base mileage.

Christa...congrats on meeting your hardcore mileage goals! You rock!

More book sites:
http://www.frugalreader.com
http://www.paperbackswap.com

These are kinda like used bookstores. You post books you're willing to mail to other folks then get credits to request books for you. Only cost is shipping your books out which is $2 to $3 using media mail. I've gotten rid of 6 books I couldn't sell on ebay and just got my first book in the mail last week. I requested Katherine Switzer's running book for women over 40 today!

I've joined several different genre groups on shelfari.com but haven't posted yet. I'm a total book geek  One of the groups has set a goal to read 50 books for the year and I'm wondering why they can't do that in a couple months ;)

BTW Richard...thanks for the tip on booksfree.com. I've given gift memberships to DD15 and my mom!

Hi Team! I actually have a few minutes to post this morning. DD8 is home from school because her allergies are really bothering her. She actually begged me to let her watch her baby brother, so I get some "me" time (and naturally, I head straight for the DIS when I get any free time)!

Shell - I'm sorry that the news from your therapist was not what you wanted to hear, but I'm glad you found a way to cheer yourself up! :)

Mel
- I bought MFM and I intend to read it, but whenever I try, I get overwhelmed. I've never run in a race, never mind a marathon, so I think I get anxious when I think too much about it. I have been building my base, although it seems to be happening slowly. I ran my longest run ever yesterday, at 6.1 miles, and I've been running since January. :confused3

Thanks for recommending those book sites. They're great. I love to read, but don't often have the time these days.

Hello to the rest of my cousins. I hope everybody has a great week! :goodvibes

Hi Team Ohana!

I did a six mile wog yesterday. Forgive me for those of you for whom this is a repeat, just looking for opinions --- dh (who is not a professional and does not play one on tv) thinks I should stop trying to get up to 10 miles for my LR every week, and instead do 4 miles every other day. He believes this will increase my weight loss potential, which frankly is a big concern. This is not what I've been reading, but he is right, I am not losing weight at any sort of pace. What do the experts recommend?

Julie -- Just relax and read one chapter at a time, and take your time. I have re-read that book more times than I care to admit, and I always find something new. :thumbsup2

Shell -- I also found the Lost finale satisfying, with lots of questions answered. I still have many more, though!

Mel -- I was also on that Saturday night express -- loaded up with Cheetos and Mountain Dew. That was the life. Fess up, who else was going to be Julie the cruise director when they grew up?!:rotfl:

Corinna -- All this end of year stuff is crazy! And you have more than some of us! party: at your house, how fantastic you all have new belts!

Jeanne -- Minutes and miles will be posted tonight. I can't seem to manage to do it over the weekend...:confused3

Jen -- How are things at work? Maybe I shouldn't ask :duck:

Debra -- Find any good books during the move?! :rotfl2: Ok, I'm down to less than 100 pages of Truman, then I'm going to have to read something very, very light. I'm thinking Bitter is the New Black, it looks hilarious. Where's a Plum book when I need it! :rolleyes1

Nancy, Richard, Christa, Johanna and all the other Cousins -- :wave2:

How's our team roll call looking, Jeanne? Do we need to send out a posse? I nominate Christa to round them all up. She's gotta be the quickest! ::yes::

Maria

Maria, thanks for sharing your experience with reading MFM. I will make another attempt to read at least one chapter soon, then I'll go from there. Maybe if I read a chapter or two in between my reading for fun books, I'll be ok.

Since I'm a newbie runner, I can't offer any advice on your plan vs. your husband's opinion. My only advice is to make sure you're not focusing too much on the numbers. Maybe you're not losing weight because you're gaining muscle. I refuse to weigh myself because I can get very caught up in the numbers. I can see a difference in the way my clothes are fitting, and that's enough for me.

I was also a Love Boat and Fantasy Island fan, but I snacked on Doritos with my Mountain Dew (I had totally forgotten that drink existed until you mentioned it - it's so sickenly sweet, but it was one of my faves). I will confess that I also wanted to be Julie the cruise director. She had all of those lovely '70s evening gowns and I already had the name....:rotfl:

Oh! You had a leg up on the rest of us since you were already Julie! I made the mistake a few years ago of trying Diet Mountain Dew when I saw it on a shelf. Way too sweet and way too much caffeine. I could literally feel my heart start to race! Julie had the best clothes, and I had a secret crush on Gopher, I was ready to tackle the high seas! Of course, I didn't *get* what was going on in those cabins. I'm sure if I watched it now I'd either be horrified or appalled (maybe both!).

Doritos are good, too, but Cheetos were my first love. I say were because I just can't bring myself to eat them anymore...unless they are baked! Gotta check the sugar, I'll probably be disappointed in those, too! ::yes::

Are there any convenient foods that aren't loaded with sugar? I'm going to have to hunt them down!

Maria

Hey Cousins!!!

First off... Maria - DON'T ASK! Work is NUTS and only getting worse as we are in the start of our busy season and one of our systems blew up!!!

OK... so I posted a pic of my girls at the recital on the weekly thread. They were too darn cute!!! My running has been non-existent since my marathon last weekend. Still not time, but I promise to make it happen sometime!!!

Ok... I still drink Mt Dew, not daily tho! Some days I really need that sugar and caffeine. I think I just push too much in too little time with work, kids and my side business. Oh and Cheeto's... LOVE the baked ones. The new version of doritos are way too cheesy now and I don't like them like I used to. Oh... and I so remember watching Love Boat (crush on Doc), Fantasy Island.... and Falcon Crest. My parents didn't know I watched that one!!!

Maria - I am cutting back on my mileage and focusing on weight loss this summer. One, it's too hot and humid here for extensive running in the summer, and two, my weight is still way too high. Have to brag tho... DOWN 5 POUNDS since Minnie!!!

Shell - Yes we started the week before Labor Day. The neighboring school district is still in school but done this week.

Mel - All this reading talk is making me jealous. I need more time to read. I used to be a huge book worm... now my reading is mostly kids books. But DD7 is into the Magic Treehouse books and those are fun.

Corrina - CONGRATS on the new belt. I took Karate in 8th grade and it was fun. It was a required class for school.

OK, gotta give the laptop to DH.

Jeanne: Wow, your weekend sounds absolutely hectic. I so sympathize with you with the moving. And it seems particularly unfair that you're stuck with more moving than I am, considering it's not your stuff. (You're a great mom to help out with both the moving and the storage. Adopt me, adopt me!)
How's your car?

I'm so glad you enjoyed Indiana Jones--I caught that line, too, and giggled. Did you enjoy the opening image with the movie image of a prairie dog hill fading in over the Paramount logo? I thought that was a nice nod to the first Indy film.

So sorry to hear about Jim. I hope he comes back--he'll be at the Marathon weekend, right?

Jen: Not to dwell on the ILs, whom I generally like, really I do. But your MIL could be related to my ILs. They really love their two sons, and there's just not any woman who can reach the foot of the pedestals the boys stand on. And if you're not family by blood...that's why I love my Ohana family so much. Running sweat is as think as blood around here.

In more important news, for the crazy work situation. I hope it gets better soon. And I'm going to get over the weekly thread sometime, where I'm looking forward to seeing your DD's pics. They're so photogenic, so I know I'll love seeing the pics. And :woohoo: for the 5 pounds lost! And just since the Minnie?!! Wow!

About bandanas....two for me. I actually wear bandanas when I run, so they're double cool gear.

Maria: Ouch about FIL/GF. That sucks eggs--and I'm glad your DS has a DSGF (too many abbreviations?) in his life. Sounds like FIL/GF jumped the shark on the whole relationship thing a long time ago. Speaking of pop culture, what a fount of pop-culture knowledge you are! "Smiles, everyone, Smiles!" I love such moments. On my first trip to WDW, my friends and I stood in line (pre-FP) and learned/sang the lyrics to all the shows we could think of: Brady Bunch, Gilligan's Island, The Love Boat. I'm sure we were annoying, especially because I sing off-key.

And because you're the expert, maybe you can tell me which television sitcoms have featured nudity. I know it's a sitcom cliche, so I'm going to the expert. On pop culture, not on nudity. (That's Jeanne!) :rotfl2: I'm the self-proclaimed Mountain Dew expert--recovering addict, coming up on four years July 1st after 18 years of enjoy the Slurmy deliciousness.

I'm no expert, but if I could play one on TV, I'd gladly join SAG! I say give the every-other-day 4 miler a try. At the very least, mixing up your WO schedule might shock your body out of complacency. I think if you can keep your metabolism high on a daily basis, then maybe your weight loss will kick back in. Shorter runs, more frequently. I think it's a :thumbsup2 for now. As for convenient foods without lots of sugar, hmm...Fig Newtons? Pretzels? For my sugar kick, I love frozen grapes.

Julie: Thank goodness someone else hates parallel parking. I always feel so stupid admitting to it. I didn't need to worry about it in spacious Fargo, but parking real estate is a valuable commodity here (not as valuable as, say, Boston, but still in demand).

I didn't mean to put any training-plan pressure on you, I'm just interested. Right now, my training plans are out the window as the schedule is wonky. So I'm living vicariously through everyone else. Plus, I intend to liberate as many ideas as I can from the rest of you. (Why research when I can steal?)
Don't worry about the marathon; you're well on schedule for completing it if you've reached your 6.1 miles already. Just enjoy where you're at for now, especially because it's pre-training. (Mel's base-building.)

In terms of Love Boat, I always wanted to be Isaac--a master mixologist with a very cool 'stache. Of course, I've always been a bit gender challenged.

Corrina: Wow, you've had a lot going on yourself, as has everyone here. I wonder if our busy-ness has something to do with the weather? But I'm happy for all the good things that are coming out of your schedule. Big congrats to the rainbow of belts--very impressive accomplishments. And I'm sure your DH's play will go smashingly and the relocation will be good for business (what's he do). Hopefully the puppy is on the mend and you're able to have some fun summer/no school plans. I'm happy you're still with us, in spirit, and hope to hear more updates once things settle down for you.

Shell: Part of me goes two MORE weeks until the next step, so I can only imagine how you must feel. And the conversation with your PT must have been disheartening--even though you know he's being conservative. But I loved your coping strategy; I hope to see Sex and the City sometime as a treat for moving, so it's good to hear it didn't disappoint.

Mel: I didn't realize DOOM's job was hectic right now--I must have missed something. But yay for the end in sight, and I hope to see pics of DD5's recital. Thanks, oh thanks for the book sites. Between you and Richard I've expanded my horizons for book-exchange options. And yes, I'm finding books I'd forgotten I owned!

For those of you who like books and giving them away, you might also like this site: http://www.bookcrossing.com/

It's a spin-off, I think, of postcrossing.com and runs a little like Where's George, which tracks a dollar bill's circulation:

At BookCrossing, you can register any book you have on the site, and then set the book free to travel the world and find new readers.
Leave it on a park bench, at a coffee shop, at a hotel on vacation. Share it with a friend or tuck it onto a bookshelf at the gym -- anywhere it might find a new reader! What happens next is up to fate, and we never know where our books might travel next. Track the book's journey around the world as it is passed on from person to person.

Losties! I felt the same way you did about the season end. I was pleased by the J.B reveal and felt it was appropriate to story lines set up earlier.

As for me: After many, many hours of moving (5 hours Friday, 6 Saturday, 6 Sunday, and a 12 hour day yesterday), all my stuff is pretty much moved. The old place still has cleaning stuff and our two bikes--I'll need to bike to our new place and walk/run back--but I'm just a couple of days from handing over our keys. Then I can really begin the work of moving in. Between now and my next move, though, I'm going to get rid of more books.

Anyway, I'm pleased to say that I've gained upper body strength from just a year ago (and lower body, but I knew that). Moving wasn't pleasant, but DOOD and I played it smart. Aside from a lot of bruises, pleasantly sore calves, and a slightly sore knee (the knee that I have problems with), I'm feeling good if tired. I haven't run since Friday, and probably won't tomorrow; I'm hoping for Thursday. I also haven't done "official" weight training since Friday, but trust me when I say there was weight lifting involved.

I'll be on and off for a while yet, as I return to a more regular schedule balanced with cleaning the former residence and unpacking in the new one. Like Mel, I prefer unpacking to packing, but I hate the top-to-bottom cleaning of the former residence.

Hey Team!

Last night I power-walked 2 miles to the subway, then did another 2 after I got home. That's 4! :thumbsup2

Tonight I plan to do another 8 miles on the bike -- but that my change subject to ds/dh's schedules. I will be so glad when all the end of year stuff is over for school! DS has a bad habit of not telling us things until the night before/morning of, and then I end up not working out like I want to. :(

Debra -- You can't use a pop culture reference "jump the shark", when you're telling me I'm full of them :rotfl2: Thank goodness Fonzie made it, I was worried about him :rotfl: So for today's blast from the past, how about some Magnum, PI? I thought Tom Selleck was the cat's meow! I just wanted to see Robin Masters! ::yes:: I have no idea which sitcoms have had nudity -- you'd better ask Jeanne! I would guess things like Empty Nest, Golden Girls, Designing Women -- but I'm sure someone tracks it somewhere!

Jen -- Hooray on the 5 lbs! That is huge! :yay: I'm giving 4 miles every other day a try. Of course, that's hard tomorrow because I have a 7:30 meeting at church and I don't get home until it's practically 6, but I'll figure something out. I might be able to do the subway both ways, which equals 4 miles! I just have to make sure I'm power-walking so I get the benefits.

Ok, so we have Gopher, Doc, Isaac -- Didn't anyone want poor Captain Stubbing? I also was not a fan of Vicki...:confused3

On the literary front, I finally finished Truman! 992 pages later, I know more than I needed to, but it was interesting. I started Founding Mothers last night. I really do have to read every day. I guess there are worse addictions! ::yes::

Julie, Jeanne, Mel, Nancy, Corinna, Julie, Shell, Richard, Johanna, Christa -- Have a Nice Day! :)

Where's the Beef?! :happytv:
Maria

Nancy -- Thanks for reminding us! :goodvibes

Happy Birthday to our Fearless Leader!

:cool1: :lovestruc :worship:  :wizard: :hippie:  :cloud9: :woohoo: :yay: :cheer2: pixiedust: :hyper: :rockband: party: :bday: :bounce: :Pinkbounc :jumping3: :mickeyjum :dogdance: :flower:

Sorry I couldn't find a naked smilie! :rotfl2:
Maria

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JEANNE!
:cool1:  :cake: party: :bday:

I hope you're celebrating well and with all your loved ones! Enjoy the day, Big Kahuna, you so deserve all the good things that come your way!

Erica: Thanks for dropping by with your donation to Robert. Even better, it's great to see you up and about, earning those miles again. You're back with a vengeance! (In the best possible sense.) :woohoo:

Maria: It's great to know you're going with the frequency plan. I think I'm going to call you the Bionic woman (and if you hate that, just call me a fembot). Right now, I'm envying your reading. I'm still reading an Ian Rankin book I started 4 weeks ago. Something got in the way. Wonder what that could be... Truman will have to wait until things settle down.

Everyone else: I hope you're enjoying summer temps, and doing so wisely. Hydrate and stay out of the direct sun for long periods of time.

As for me: Sitting in the new digs...sweating in the sweltering, humid heat. Looking at our window air-conditioning unit that's sitting on the floor, waiting to be installed. And thinking, "Eh, the ice pack on the back of the neck is just easier." Tomorrow I'm working out at the gym...because it's air conditioned.

Hey guys .... Sorry I have been "Lost in Space"...Cyber Space that is.:lmao: Anywho.....My LTO! WOW! With the girls being home and work schedule changing up with loosing some clients and getting new ones...and doing my CEUs so I can continue to be a LPC...Da,da,da,da,da,da:faint: Oh, yes, and my WOs!

Sorry I can't keep up, but I love you guys and think of you everyday....

OK...Off to finish my home study on ETHICS! We have to have a min of 3 hours on the topic of ethics now...how sad is that...::cop:

If you care to see my WOs just look on my WO blog. I have also added nutrition but I think you can only see the totals.

Happy Bday Jeanne

:bday: Jeanne!

I'll assume you're out doing some naked celebrating tonight :cool1:

Aloha Cousins!

Rain, rain go away come again some other day....Actually, I'll probably be wishing for it again this weekend when it's 90

I'm halfway through Founding Mothers. It's ok, but Cokie Roberts is definitely not one of the great literary talents of her generation. :rolleyes1

Mel -- How are you? What are you reading right now? Next up for me is Bitter is the New Black. :bitelip:

Christa -- I'm personally in favor of ethics, but I agree with you, it is a shame you have to spend three hours reviewing it... :confused3

Debra -- You made me laugh out loud! I wish I had bionic parts! I think I'm more like the energizer bunny, as long as you keep recharging the batteries, I keep going! :hyper: I know you are deep in the move, but it sounds like you are starting to see twilight at the end of that tunnel. Keep moving towards the light! :thumbsup2

Nancy -- So good to see you post! How are things? :surfweb:

Erica -- You are back in the saddle and in motion! It is so nice of you to donate miles! Glad to see you are making your way back! :cool1:

Julie -- I saw a where you have a big birthday this month! I'm not sure when it is, so I'll wish you a :bday: now!

To all the Family -- Everybody have a fabulous weekend! DH is running in the Harpoon 5-miler tomorrow, so double miles for Team Ohana! I really wanted to do it, but then I found out walkers are not welcome. :(

Gotta get you guys some miles later!
Maria :goodvibes

Hi Cousins!

Jen - My DS loves those Magic Treehouse books too. Thank goodness there are so many of them!

Debra - I don't think I knew anyone who wanted to be Isaac from Love Boat, but I can see how being him could be cool. Bartenders do get all the gossip.
Are you getting settled in your new home?
I haven't had a chance to look at bookcrossing.com yet, but I like the concept. I used to work with a woman who would leave books behind for others to find and read. I borrowed a book from her once and she told me that when I was done, I should leave it somewhere for someone else to find. I tried to leave it in the train station several times, but people kept returning it to me, thinking that I had forgotten it. :confused3

Jeanne - Happy Birthday!!! :bday:

Maria - Are you ready for the heat? I noticed that you have a birthday coming up in a few days. Are you doing anything special? My birthday is a mere 20 days after yours. I will try to remember to post on your actual birthday, but just in case...
:bday:

Hello to all of the other cousins too!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Jeanne - HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!!

I am sorry team, I just haven't been around and haven't put in much time and miles this week. LTO/WTO and illness. Not my illness, my mom. My day was out of town all week and my mom got really ill. I was in the emergency room on Wednesday and out at her house every night. She lives 20+ minutes, so after work I get the kids done, go out there, come home and crash. She is on the up swing, thank God. I had several lectures with her and I think it finally sank in that she has to stop feeling sorry for herself (because of her illnesses) and take care of herself.

Ahhhhhh... so that was my week. I am totally exhausted. I will be out and about all day tomorrow to several things, including a b-day party for my nephew and I don't want to go to at all. MIL is mad at us AGAIN! So I am sure something will happen at the party.

OK, enough rambling from me... I will try to be more upbeat next time.

Jen...yikes, hope your mom is ok. Your DDs recital picture was way too cute! Lenna's recital is coming up on Friday. I spray painted her pink ballet shoes black today. BTW, I think I found those 5 lbs you lost :rolleyes1

Robert...great to see you back, both posting and walking!

Maria...on the TM is Not a Girl Detective. I can only read skinny books on the TM because the big, fat, juicy books I usually prefer don't fit. I also got Katherine Switzer's Running and Walking for Women over 40 from one of my frugalreader.com swaps. It's cool so far...she has a 30 min running plan (kinda like C25K) then a one hour runner plan.

Debra...how's the unpacking going? DOOM's job has been ugly for several months. He's an IT manager for the Y which, in addition to the fitness centers, administers foster care contracts for several counties. They lost two of the contracts several months ago but have to continue to support them through June 30. Unfortunately, the people that worked in those counties have gone on and found other jobs so he's covering the same number of users with 1/3 the staff, plus trying to coordinate the transition.

I had a CT scan this week to try and find the source of some abdominal and back pain that's been bugging me for awhile. I found a mass on my R side back in Jan but 3 ultrasounds couldn't identify it. My insurance company wouldn't approve an MRI so we decided to just watch it because it's small and feels like part of a muscle. Anyway, I started having some problems last month with abdominal pain that went straight through me to that spot on my back. I managed to get one of the imaging centers to do a CT for me for free (they cost a LOT less than MRI) and found nothing to explain the pain. Good news is there's no big scary mass anywhere either, so I can finally quit worrying about the goofy thing. The CT did show some markedly degenerated discs in my spine which doesn't look good for longterm, but I'll worry about that when it becomes a problem.

I really think I'll be glad when this year is over. It's just been one of THOSE. Anybody else?

BTW, Prince turned 50 today...yikes!
