Team 6 - Team Ohana - Check in and introduce!

Hi...just popping over because I read the word triathlon! :goodvibes

Jeanne...Tris are very much fun...I hope you do find a bike (doesn't have to be fancy) and try it!

Amy or whoever asked about attire....I don't like the one piece trisuits. OK..maybe that isn't fair...I've never worn one, but with my body shape (wider in the hips and big thighs), I think it wouldn't look good. I mostly will wear trishorts (like bike shorts, but a thinner pad that will dry much faster than a regular bike chamois pad), and a jog bra and singlet top. That way I'm not having to add clothing during transitions.

Whoever asked if it is more grueling than a marathon? NO WAY! It is much more fun, and not as taxing, IMHO. I think even a long distance tri is easier on me than a marathon. :rotfl:

I wonder if we need a thread on WISH for the triathletes.... thoughts? Otherwise, I'll just have to keep popping into other team's threads.

and...I've been doing triathlon since 1999, so if anyone has questions, I'd be happy to try to share some of my experience. I would guess I've done about 50 (wild guess), including 5 Ironmans.

Shell: Thanks for the theory link; every once in a while I get in the mood to read how people have put together the elements of Lost & got an answer. I gave up on that one a long time ago. I'm going to try & read the site before this week's epi, as it's intriguing. I wonder how the author is going to reconcile the assurance viewers have given that the island's weirdness is grounded/can be explained by science. Although I wouldn't be surprised if that claim turned out to be a red herring. (Thanks, Maria! ;) ) I also loved your description of DDR, as it only makes me want it more--DOOD thinks I'm kidding when I say that, but I'm not. Anyway, I'm glad you have DDR to help alleviate the boredom of a safe and healthy recovery. (Remember that safe and healthy part.)

Corrina: What an eloquent and thoughtful post about your happy pace. I'm so glad you've found the pleasure in running and found a happy pace, especially as it seems to jive with the pleasure you find in races, their camaraderie, and your personal achievement.

I'm also delighted that you're in for the charity run for personal reasons--me too. Our race will have a different start time for walkers, so I'm going to need to pony up & decide what I'm doing soon. I'm waiting to hear if my ILs will be doing it with me for sure; I complain about the self-inviting, but I'd really like them to do the walk with me. I think they'd get a kick out of being with other walkers & get a much better sense of why this hobby of ours can become so essential to our happiness.

Mel: Of course your 12K counts! Sarasota doesn't have a Race for the Cure, though? Huh. Shows what I know. And doesn't that shorts thing just drive you a little nutters? I don't always need a water belt, but it's nice to have a couple of pockets.

Jim: Does it count that I was happy for you that you beat your DS? :lmao: Or, more accurately, that you achieved a goat that was important to you. Wierd, I know, but I was delighted.

Christa: Dang! You natural athletes--just going out and doing it. I guess you can tell I'm a "natural" researcher--gotta read everything on the topic, compare approaches, worry about things. :rotfl2: Maybe I'll just try your method, although I don't see a tri in my near future. (I'd have to learn how to swim.) Btw, thanks for the update on your DM on the weekly thread; I wasn't sure if we should ask.

Lily: You are so worthy of much more than the miles. Stay strong & take your recovery slow, but steady.

Jeanne: I wish I could say for certain whether or not to invest in Lost, as my responses tend to go up & down. It started out promising, then got a little melodramatic for my taste, now seems to be reinvigorated. I'm not sure how I'll feel about it until the end of the series, I think. I can say, however and without giving you any spoilers, that if you're really into the idea of seeing the actor who plays Paolo--don't waste your time. He's really not in the series. (I do agree he's attractive, though.)

Betsy: I'm not a triathlete, but I do think a tri thread would be awesome. I would probably lurk there, as DOOD (my DH) is intrigued by them. Someday, he says, when his work life settles down...

As for me: Not much to report. Monday was an odd physical/emotional day. I felt a bit off the whole day, and it seems to have its origins in my movie marathon. I loved doing it, but 12 hours was harder on me physically than I'd imagined. I actually told DOOD that we spent more time in the movie seats than we had on the Goofy course; how's that for sick? I'm hoping tomorrow's workout will have me feeling 100% (or at least 85%).

I also think we have enough interest in the charity runs as a Ohana thing to post our tentative plans; I'll update it as necessary.

Okay, just an update on the proposed Ohana participates in a charity event. It seems like many of us are on board, having either already signed up for an event, considered it, or will consider one. It looks like we have a range of event types & distances. So even though we won't be together on these events, we will be together in spirit.

Ohana Charity/Challenge Calendar: Here are the events I have so far, roughly organized by the calendar. Let me know if you wish to add an event, change an event, or to add details to an event.

Jim: Breast Cancer Marathon, February, Jacksonville Beach (I took the liberty of adding this, as it was this event that inspired the idea)
Richard: Spring Fever 5K, March
Mel: Springfest 12K (Child Protection Center), March, Sarasota
Christa: Metrolina AIDS Project, March, Charlotte
Jim: MS 100, April
Debra: Susan Komen Race for the Cure, May, Pittsburgh
Corrina: Susan Komen Race for the Cure, May, Minneapolis

If I've missed someone in the posts or provided inaccurate info, I apologize. Organizing data isn't a strength of mine.

UPDATED: 5-14-08; Events in Blue have been completed. Updated through post #653.

For those who missed the initial posts, as our thread is rather active: My thought was that we could all choose a local (or not local, if it works for you) charity event of your choice/distance/interest, and participate in it as an Ohana team member. It's a way of earning the team miles, of course, but also of doing something together. As I said earlier, I'm planning on wearing my WISH shirt on my back and carrying Ohana in my heart. So in a way, I'll be racing for the charity, my WISH team, and my Ohana family! :goodvibes

Thanks for clarifying, Deb. Sometimes I just glaze over the posts and I somehow had the idea we all had to do something on the same day as yours, which was Mother's Day. Since my baby graduates from college on Mother's Day that wasn't going to happen. I would be happy to run for a charity event, but don't put me down for the tri just yet. I have a half in April and I think that benefits something but I have to check. I also plan to do the Run for Victory Junction in December and that is clearly a charity event. All proceeds go to the Camp for Victory Junction which is a wonderful NASCAR themed camp for medically challenged children endowed by the Petty family. I did it last year and it was awesome. Oh, and I ALWAYS wear my WISH shirt to events. I'm so proud to be part of a team that will actually have me!
OK, so if you won't tell me what happened to Paolo, will I at least find out if I watch the DVD? So much is always left up in the air with that show. I sure hope they are able to tie up all the loose ends and not just pull a Tony Soprano.

I wonder if we need a thread on WISH for the triathletes.... thoughts?

Yes, please, Betsy! We discussed this at the beginning of the year but no one jumped into start one. I think we have a lot of folks that do tris or would like to but I'm not qualified to start the thread so I didn't do it. Sounds like you'd be a great one to do it!

Someday I will learn to stop saying never when it comes to this sport (as in I'll never do a full, I'll never do a tri, etc ;) ) I'm actually contemplating swim lessons so I can consider a tri. I talked to one of my patients about my foot today (she's a PT). She said the same thing the podiatrist did...if the foot hurts after a double digit LR, that may be the limit of what it will tolerate and continuing to abuse it will result in scar tissue that might lead to surgery down the road. She also said if I can comforably do a half, I should probably stick with those. Soooo...I was planning to add a 4th running day each week and slowly decrease my walking intervals...and now I'm thinking maybe biking and/or swimming would be more productive and less stress on the foot. I'll have to get a real bike too...my granny cruiser bike with the fat butt seat probably would be laughed off the tri course ;)

Debra...my race is Mar 29, the Springfest 12K. It benefits the Child Protection Center of Sarasota. I'm a natural researcher too. I've read Bingham, Galloway, Higdon, Glover, the ChiRunning book, as many running books as I can get my hands on! Sorry you had a yucky Mon...hope today is better. I get those low energy days too...just glad when they go away.

Jeanne...I think we've got a few WISHers who'll be at the Victory Junction race. It looks really cool and lots of personal interaction with the Pettys. That was one of my favorite parts of CDC last year...John Bingham was right there checkin' chips at the Expo, chatting with folks, and doing commentary at the finish line.

Lily...we're all glad to see you up and around and hope you heal up quickly!

Corinna...I love your happy pace comments...they made me really stop and think. I'd love my happy pace to be faster but keep wondering if I should just be happy I can run at all.

Christa...thanks for originating the happy pace concept. Glad to hear your mom is doing well with chemo.

My office website just went live! If anyone's interested in what I do IRL, http://www.sarasotathyroid.com. My picture on the Meet our Team page has my 2007 medal shadowbox over my left shoulder :)

Oh, and Jeanne: should I add your mini-tri to the list? No pressure, no pressure! ;)

You can add an MS 100 in April for me.

Hello Cousins!

Today was a rest day for me, so I'm just busy rebuilding. The training plan I'm following (for better or for worse) has a 2 mile run on Mondays, the day after the long run. I think that's the toughest run of the week in some ways. Do I run it at a happy pace? Of course not - I push it. So a rest day on Tuesday is MOST welcome.

Scuba Jim! Thanks for sharing your experience and advice. I think I am headed for enjoying the distance at a happy pace. For what little it's worth, I'm very impressed by your hard-won speedy 5K! Also, MS 100! WOW.

Jeanne - the battle to stay ahead of the sweepers is a noble and admirable one. I can't wait to see you at the Minnie! ::MinnieMo Also, extra thanks this week for getting all the miles and minutes straight PLUS doing the extra math for the Lily miles and minutes.

Christa - you are an inspiration and I will think of you on March 16, when I tell myself I "only" have to run 3.11 miles. Man, it was only a year ago that running a mile was an unbelievable dream. I think you're right that the only way to run faster is to run faster. I'm going to keep going with the interval workouts in my training plan. It's hard work, but makes the treadmill workouts less incredibly DULL anyhow. And I feel like it's bound to increase my cardiovascular health or something, as well.

Tiger Lily - You don't need to try to make yourself worthy. You are worthy already and much beloved around these parts. We can't bring you a Hot Dish (that's what they call a Casserole in Minnesota, goodness knows why!), so we cooked up some miles for you instead. Nobody gets left behind!

Debra - I have considered doing the run for myself and then the walk with my family afterward this year, but I'm afraid no one would want to walk very close to me, sweaty as I will certainly be. Oh, mine is on May 11 as well - Mother's Day. I may add another charity event in June, but it's a half-marathon and I'm a little nervous. I always assumed Disney would be my first half......

That is SO crazy that you spent more time on the movie marathon than on the Goofy course. Unreal. What films did you see? Did you list them earlier? I saw....5 movies this year. Knocked Up, Ratatouille, Harry Potter, Enchanted and Juno. Do you sense a theme? Evidently, I'll only go to kids movies or geek-as-accidental-father-pregnancy movies. :rolleyes1

Mel - your office's web site looks great! I love that your medal is in your photo. My sister had Graves disease a few years ago and was having a terrible time. Thank goodness there are people like you out there who know how to help.

I love the happy pace concept as well, and wonder about the wisdom of trying to crank it up. It seems like progress is awfully hard earned and goes away when a person slacks off for a while. :rolleyes1 I am definitely going to up the gratitude on the running I'm able to do: I'm grateful to be able to run at all. I'm grateful that my HP allows me to cheerfully run most of the races I'm interested in without fear of being swept. I'm grateful to have a pace that feels good.

Have a great night, everone. Sleep tight!

Christa....Good for you for sticking to your guns on the clipless! :thumbsup2 I've got a nasty scar on the back of my leg thanks to an unfortunate combination of clipless pedals, an intersection and a pot hole. :rolleyes1 There are days when those things drive me crazy...and I wonder..WHY I ever got them. :confused3

Jim...That 5K pace is SUPER impressive. :worship: I'm out to get a PR on my next 5K. For me and me only...it's just one of those things....but you can bet your booty that it won't be anywhere in that range. Nor will it be in my HPR (happy pace range).

Corinna...Love your logic...and I tend to agree that running in the HPR (see above) is, in its own way, more rewarding than a PR. Some of THE best runs I've had (running in Boston..not the marathon just the city....running the Half during Goofy this year...etc) were when I was running slower than my normal pace. Sometimes it's about being in the moment and actually feeling "good" in a run. When we push..that is nearly impossible. Good for you for coming to that realization and giving yourself credit for how far you've come! :thumbsup2

Debs...Sorry your body rebelled after the movie marathon! I'm sure a few days of normal exercise and routine will have you feeling better again! The Oscar movies this year were, for the most part, pretty heavy and would have left me feeling emotionally beat up had I seen them all back to back. You're a tough chick :).

Team O'hana...you guys truly rock. AWESOME that you donated miles to Lily. AWESOME that you are running/biking a charity race as a team event. :grouphug: I had to stop in and see my "other" team. Love you guys! Have a great week!

I'm running a 5K (Spring Fever 5K) this weekend which supports a local charity group. I can wear my WISH shirt in honor of Team Ohana, too.

Jeanne, I found a charity race just for you:

HIDDEN RIVER RESORT 4th Annual 5K TRAIL STREAK

SATURDAY, April 26 - MACCLENNY -- HIDDEN RIVER RESORT 4th Annual 5K TRAIL STREAK. 5KR/1MW. 10:00 am. info@hiddenriverresort.com; hiddenriverresort.com
[ Northeast Florida / Southeast Georgia's only clothing optional park is hosting its fourth clothing optional trail run and 1 mile guided walk on the Wood Nymph nature trail. All proceeds benefit the Golden Retriever Emergency Assistance Team (G.R.E.A.T. Rescue of Northeast Florida). The Hidden River Resort 5K clothing optional trail run uses hiking trails through open field, pine forest and along scenic St. Marys River. All runners receive a commemorative T-shirt if registered before April 10. The park is 14 miles north of Macclenny off CR 185. Awards, food and refreshments are provided after the race. All participants are welcome for the day to take advantage of the park's 88 acres of hiking trails, picnic facilities, secluded sand white beaches, hot tub and swimming pool. That evening The Nudie Blue's concert will bring the forest alive with music (extra fee). Overnight camping is available by reservation. ]

This brings to mind a question, if the race is clothing optional, why are they giving away a commemorative Tshirt?

Mel: Too funny! I would definitely do it if I could find a painfree method of pinning the bib! I just checked out your workplace website.....quite impressive....you are one smart lady! :worship: :worship: :worship:

Jeanne darlin, put your clothes back on and welcome your new player, the priuncess Julie, Laughinplace199. She claims to like fun and laughing so I figured your team of unique and wonderful Wishers was the place for her.

I could do one of those races with you, after all pandas are just little bares.

Streaking away now Panda:hippie:

My Tri on March 29th is for the Metrolina AIDS Project here in Charlotte....Does that count?

I have wanted to do that one for the past 2 years....I did the Charlotte marathon last year so there was no way I could do both (the marathon was the weekend after). Not doing Charlotte this year so may tri it...the only thing is it being on Sunday. It is really hard for me to miss church b/c of my involvement....This is the South man....I want them to have the race on Saturday.;)
There are pics of it on the tricharlotte website. http://www.tricharlotte.com/12-2-07_victory-junction-gang/12-2-07_victory-junction_p0.htm
I think that will take you to it.

Hey team - I have been a little quiet this week because I have been busy and well, a little sick. My kids disease finally spread to me. I did 5 miles on Sunday and was struggling with my breathing (but my time was OK). I woke up Monday with a chest cold and my head ready to fall off. UGHHH... thanks kids!!!! This afternoon I am leaving town with my mom for our annual quilting retreat. That should be fun and I hope to get lots done. I also am bringing my laptop and a couple walking dvd's to do if I feel better. I walked .25 mile with DH on the track yesterday and was out of breath!

WELCOME JULIE!!!

Mel - So jealous that you get to take little weekend trips to WDW!!! My YMCA has a tri and mini-tri every August (HOT!!) and I really want to do it sometime in my life. I just need to speed up my swimming.

Debra - I am still looking for a charity event and I will find one. Most of our races are for clubs or non-profit organizations which are really what I consider a charity.

Jeanne - Seriously, what is wrong with the south, all your races are naked!!!!!

OK, gotta get some work done. Since I will have my laptop when I am gone, I will try to check in (as long as the other ladies don't razz me.) I am the youngest one at this retreat every year and the other ladies try to all be my mom's (I am almost 36 so it is kind of funny).

Does it ever seem like Panda sends us someone new every time the conversation turns to nudity? How embarrassing! You do that on purpose, don't you Panda? ;)

I have to figure they have methods of dealing with the numbers in those races - the coolest would be if they had them made into ginormous temporary tattoos! I personally could not contemplate running without a sturdy sportsbra at the very least! Strangely, there don't seem to be any clothing optional runs in Minnesota......

Julie - :welcome: To Team Ohana! We all look forward to getting to know you.

Amy - It's always so nice when you stop by. I used to live near Boston - I never ran there, but I bet it's really nice. I watched the NOVA show about the Boston Marathon and they did a lot of training runs around town, which was fun to see.

Jen - So sorry you ended up with the germs too - that's always the way it goes, isn't it? Everyone else is sick and then mom gets sick last. I hope you recover quickly from it so you can have a great time on your quilting retreat with your mom and your honorary moms! That's a good plan to bring along your videos. :thumbsup2 I've never done a walking video - do they have you walk in place or back and forth?

So now is the part on Team Ohana where I lamely try to talk about Lilo and Stitch. The summer before last, we had the last Lilo and Stitch movie, "Leroy and Stitch" in the DVD player on a road trip, so I heard it many times. Does anyone else just love the incidental characters in that series?

I love this exchange so much:

Dr. Hamsterveil: It has taken Leroy a paltry few hours to succeed where you took three years to fail. What is wrong with you?''
Gantu: Well, I have a bad knee.
Dr. Hamsterveil: No, that was a rhetorical question. You don't answer it! Now will you get me down from this chair?
Gantu: Uh, was that a rhetorical question?
Dr. Hamsterveil: NO! That was not... Get me down! Get me down!

:lmao: Cracks me up every time.

Oh hey, forgot to mention as I was running out the door I had to grab one more thing quick... My Mickey Medal and pictures. Those ladies are just in awe that I did a 1/2 marathon last year. Wait till they hear I did a full!!!!

Corinna - I have the Leslie Sansome DVD's. I use them for cross training. You walk in place, sometimes jog, do kicks and side steps and all sorts of things. It's better than nothing. The retreat doesn't have a workout room. Last year I was planning to swim laps, but the pool was the size of the bath tub. Then when I went to get in, it was dirty with all these globs of floaty things. Totally grossed me out so I am not sure I will do that again this year.

Hi everyone. I'm a newbie to both running and the WISH boards and I'm very happy to be placed on your team. I hear it's lots of fun over here! :goodvibes Everyone here is so friendly and supportive, so I'm very glad to have found you guys.

I'm not a runner, but I hope to be one soon! DH ran his first (and so far, only) marathon in 1999, two months before our first child was born. Since then, he has run several half marathons and 10K's and he runs regularly to stay in shape. We have three great kids, a daughter who is 8, a son who is 6, and another son who is 16 months. I'm a SAHM and up until now my exercise has consisted of carrying laundry baskets, manuevering around the obstacle course of toys in my living room, and chasing after the baby.

I need to lose some weight ( I can't use the "I just had a baby" excuse anymore since my baby is over a year old now) and want to get in shape. DH and I will both turn 40 this summer :scared1: , so DH suggested that we run the Disney marathon in '09 to celebrate being fit 40 yr olds. I must be crazy, because I agreed.

I've already had my first Marathon anxiety dream. I can only imagine the dreams I will have as it gets closer.

I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Julie

That's cool Betsy. We will have to "talk" at the next WISH meet. In case you didn't know, I met you indirectly at the marathon. I was with Big Vic and Mel in Epcot when you ran up to Big Vic to introduce yourself!!!
