Team 6 - Team Ohana - Check in and introduce!

HI TEAM!! (and Amy ;) ).

Well last night I made it to the Y 10 minutes early and ran the track. Then I went to Bootcamp (haven't been there since before the Marathon) and she made us run the track some more. Then off to bootcamp, which kicked my butt. I am so glad I did BC before the marathon because I think it really helps me with my core. So that is why I am back to it. She works us hard!

Amy - You know, we would gladly take you on our team (especially with all those tri miles you will be racking up!!)

Maria - I have never been able to watch Lost. It's one of those shows that I want to rent on DVD because EVERYONE talks about it. I know, I am several years behind, but one day I will understand what everyone is saying!

Today will be a little crazy for me. At noon I have to run to the opposite side of town (we live on that side), get DD4 and take her to school for Kindergartner for a day (more like an afternoon). She starts Kindy next year. Then back to work, then back to school to pick the girls up since DD4 is there. Hopefully my Friday will go by fast!

Hi everyone! I am 100% on board for the Twin Cities Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Mother's Day. Well, I'm not registered yet, but it has always been in my plans. So much the better if it is a "team" event! I ran it last year in honor of my grandmother and mother-in-law who had both died of cancer in the previous few years. It's an incredible event.

Debra, sorry to say that CASH (Too silly) doesn't run with me. He's usually home with the boys while I run. Running is pretty uncomfortable for him, as well - he's more of a walker and a skiier. He's extrordinarily supportive of my habit, though, and nudged me to do my run yesterday even though I really didn't feel like it. He watches the kids while I'm doing the long runs and races, so it works out pretty well. :thumbsup2

Thanks Team Ohana!!! Specifically Debra.

I managed to get in an hour today doing a stretch/strengthen class all because Debra was talking about checking out a yoga class last weekend :thumbsup2

So thanks for the idea Debra!!! Course I wasn't too happy during it as I was dying. I thought yoga was easy! HA! downward dog, plank, modified cobra which moves into something else and all this way to fast for this poor uncoordinated fool LOL

the cool thing was, towards the end of the class i caught a glimpse of a 2008 Donald race shirt and then I was mentally pushing the instructor to finish up. It was the lady's 1st 1/2 marathon and seems like she might be up for another go in 2010. very cool seeing someone at the gym that has done the race. i was the only one i knew of training for 1/2 & full marathons so i was all excited to see someone else. I'm the odd duck usually dying on the treadmill trying to learn to like a 12 min/mile LOL

Happy Training Trails everyone!!! Hope the weekend treats you all well :)

Thanks for the feedback on my suggestion on the charity race. My thought was that we could all choose a local (or not local, if it works for you) one, charity race of your choice/interest, and run it sort as a "team event" in spirit. I found running for Lily really helped me, as does putting in my miles & minutes for Ohana. This is kind of an extension of that, just on the course. I'd wear my WISH shirt on my back and carry my team in my heart. (So cheesy, I should pick up and move to Wisconsin.)

So, Jen, any local 5K would work so long. (They didn't have a Race for the Cure in Fargo, either. :confused3). Christa's MS Ride definitely counts. Nancy, you could do Race for the Cure, or another race that doesn't conflict with your other plans. Corrina could do the Twin Cities Race for the Cure (which I hear is fabulous). Jim's race would count--but, Jim, you're always welcome to sign up for another.

As for me, I'm planning on signing up for our local Race for the Cure. The reason that particular race popped into my head is that it would be a race I normally wouldn't do, as it's the week before the Cleveland 1/2. But with this as an added incentive.....

Anyway, I think it would all be great if we either signed up for a charity race for Team Ohana and/or really promote those charity races we already do. A big thanks to Jim & Jen for their earlier posts on charity races that got this poor little brain percolating!

Mel, Vanessa, Denny: Just a shout-out to you all! I know you're busy, but I so appreciate having you on our team! I hope your WOs, work, and life in general are all treating you well!

Christa: Less chafing. I think you just said the magic words. I might seriously consider it. Right now I wear men's shorts. (As I said, I"m a bit androgynous. And I like lots of pockets.)

Martha: C'mon, you know you wanna hang out here. Where else are you gonna get conversations about 50Ks, skirts, tris, sci-fi, and Broadway? We're a well-rounded group we are. And you and Amy and Panda Dave fit right in!

Shell: I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately, I live in a household where DOOD's unspoken motto is, "Push through the pain!" I've picked up some of his bad habits. (He's not that way with me, just with himself.) I so hope you get to have the lights of Broadway shine on you today. Love Broadway, love it! I'd even take a couple of extra inches of snow for you if I could.

Richard: Back for another 50K in December. Wow! It must get in your blood. Congrats. Btw, is Coco your dog? We have rescue cats, so I really appreciate you promoting the Golden Retriever of Houston organization. I'm so sorry to hear about your Muddy Buddy being cancelled, as it sounds like you were really looking foward to it.

Nancy: I hope you've nipped that cold in the bud. I can't imagine snow shoveling helps (if your neck of the woods is like ours, it's rain with some snow mixed in....very icky).

Maria: Snowed in with a bunch of active 9-10 yo boys on a sleepover. Oooooh, now that's an exercise in parental love and patience!

Amy: Do check out the Orson Card series. It comes highly recommended from other members of Team Ohana! :goodvibes As for the core exercises that hurt my knee, I have a feeling it's because my ab muscles are week and I rely on my legs/knees to compensate. (Ab muscles, what ab muscles? I'm working on it.) I was having problem with the plank, so have modified that one to the one you suggested on the weekly thread to alleviate stress on the wrists. I get slight twinges during bicycle crunches--should I modify that one? And things with the stability ball are touch and go. I'm afraid I don't know what they're all called. One's a jackknife. I did notice some soreness in yoga last week, esp. with Downward Facing Dog & Warrior, but I know that was my own stupidity. Interestingly, the exercises in the Chi Running book are working for me. (I may be a convert and start chanting soon.) Geez, I hope I'm not bombarding you with too much. Any core exercise you could suggest would be helpful.

Jen: It really sounds like you liked BootCamp. Yea! As you can tell from the above, I'm really a convert to needing to work the core, so I'm glad you have an instructor whom you admire and who challenges you.

Corrina: I'm so glad you are running in honor of your GM & MIL. That makes those events even more special I think. I'm glad CASH is supportive to. Tell me, does he walk the line, since he doesn't run the course? (Wearing all black, naturally.)

Diane: Welcome! :cool1: Thanks for popping in. And I'm glad you're taking yoga sort of with me! I'm so out of practice with yoga that I can't call my practice practice. But it felt so good--okay, sore good--the next day that I'm going back this weekend. I hope you keep it up; we'll get coordinated together. It was so cool that you met someone who did the Disney 1/2, too! See, you meant to take the class!

As for me: Circuit training for me today, followed by strength training. I'm trying to give my legs that extra day between my LR (which is still pathetically short at this point.) I was so happy that there was no one to interfere with my circuit training today, so I was able to keep my HR up. In fact, one gentleman even asked me if I was doing the circuit & LISTENED to me! :yay: Tomorrow I get up extra early to get in my C25K day & rest of the WO before we have an all-day movie day. And I mean all day. 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. I'm gonna be sore on Sunday, and not from working out!

Maria & Nancy and other Losties: (Everyone else, ignore this as it may contain spoilers)!

Man, oh, man! I just love that Lost keeps claiming to answer questions--which they do. What they don't advertise is the 1/2 dozen extra questions they raise for every answer. From the beginning of the epi, I suspected that Aaron was involved in Kate's issue-of-the-week. Of course, they gave us this red herring before the twist at the end. Still, the only time they bring Aaron into the storyline is to do something like this, right? I'm not sure that Jack knows, which I find interesting. Not sure what he knows about Kate's son, although it would explain why he's willing to testify in the way he did. I don't count Aaron as the six, either. So who.....?

And I'm really looking forward to seeing Michael and maybe more of Walt. Crazy Locke, meh. Bad-boy Sawyer now seems to exist merely to illuminate Kate's issues, so I hope he gets more of his own screen time w/o her. In general, I want more polar bears and bring back Charlie. Death means nothing on the island. :rotfl: No, I do think they're re-energized by the end date being solidified. They're trying to tie up lots of stuff quickly.

One last question: what did you make of the card "playing" game. ESP?

Hi guys! :goodvibes Thanks for not minding that I crash your thread all the time.

Christa...yeahhhh...the tri suit....the main reason I'm thinking of getting that transition girl skirt. I've never tried one on...but I'm afraid it will be unflattering :scared1: . Not that I really care that much about how I look during a race...it's one of those things I think about before hand...but once in the midst of the event it won't matter a bit. I know I'll be SUPER slow during the tri lol...so I'm not sure if it matters how long it takes me to transition.

Another question for you on the tri....is it more grueling than a marathon in your opinion? I have no point of reference for how it's going to feel, except that I know swimming is BRUTAL!!! I finally got my bike on the trainer yesterday so I'm hoping to put some miles in, in addition to the spin classes. Need to get my bike fitness up for sure.

Yeah, I really don't look all that great in the tri suit, but it works well. I was comfortable the whole tri...well as comfortable as you can be doing a tri....About the marathon vrs. tri....I have only done a sprint. The hardest thing for me was the transitions. After getting out of the water (I AM SLOW ON THE SWIM) I felt a little dizzy and disorientated (SP?). I have been told that is normal. Then after getting off the bike, all I can say it ouch! But after 1/2 mile I was fine.
A marathon lasts longer than the spring tri so it was over faster.
Now a 1/2 IM or IM is a new ballgame. Just practice the transitions...girl, you will do so great!

Debra, I'm SO glad you said that about Core hurting your knees because your ab muscles are...challenged ;) I bought a new workout video today to work on core, and I couldn't even get through the Ab part because I have non-existent abs (which was actually the point of why I bought the video, but I digress)...but now my knees are just KILLING me. I could feel my arms and legs compensating, but try as I might, I just couldn't get my abs to do the things they wanted me to make them do....

To everyone else: *waves* I've been so backed up with work and school that I haven't had much time to post, but I'm enjoying reading what you're up to! I was thinking about doing the Philadelphia race for the cure anyways, so now I have a better reason to try it out! I have to convince someone else they want to run it with me (I am NOT doing my first race by myself!!!!), but it's a definite possibility, and a great idea regardless!

Amy: welcome to our thread....we're the most fun people around, but don't let panda know we told you...Ender's Game is one of my absolute favorite books...I wasn't AS into the sequels because they got away from battle school (my favorite part of the first book)...but they're definitely all worth reading!

I made it to Broadway! Yay! I went to see Rent, which is my most favorite show out of all the ones I've ever seen. Last time was my 4th time seeing it - it's about the only show that I've seen on Broadway that I would willingly go spend more money on (that my friend had 2-for-1 coupon for tickets didn't hurt) and the fact that it is closing forever June 1 also made this a "one-last-time" viewing for posterity. I enjoyed it as always. Tamyra Gray from American Idol is currently in it. We got the day off from work (woo hoo) so my friend and I went in at noon instead of later. I was worried because the prediction kept changing and getting worse so it was a 5-10in snowfall + wintry mix in the afternoon before changing back to snow before around midnight changing to freezing rain with a tenth of an inch accumulation. EEK! Of course that would've been when we were getting home. Thankfully, while they were wrong with the additional snowfall amounts, they were also wrong with the freezing rain part of it - all precip probably stopped sometime during the show. The roads were fine when we got back. yay!

To the Losties: Is it really Claire's Aaron? Do you think? Or do you think Kate was lying to Sawyer about being pregnant and that's why she left so quick so he wouldn't realize that she was lying. I thought Jack/Claire realized awhile back that they were related, didn't they? I know we know, but I thought they know too. Anyone have any ideas on why they are the Six - as in why they got a settlement, why they are so notorious, etc.?

Amy: I don't really know what necessarily hurts my knee, just that it does. That such a non-answer. Certain things are better than others - I can use the bike or the elliptical, but I can't walk on the treadmill even with 0 incline at 3.0mph without it hurting or use the rowing machine (which is probably obvious). The pain is mostly on the inside of my knee - meaning the part of the knee that faces the other leg, not on the inside internals of my knee. When I was doing the DVD, I was doing crunches with my knees bent to 90 degrees with my legs on the either side of a stability ball. That was the modified version already, the main way to do it was with you holding the ball between the feet and extending them up in the air.

Hello Family!

Great job this week on the training! As of this morning when I posted our info onto the spreadsheet we had donated 15.99 miles and 5:54 into Lily's account. At that time, I had not gotten any input from 4 people so the total might even be more. Our miles/minutes for Lily were truly a gift since I did not include them with our totals. It's the least we could do for someone who devotes so much time and energy to supporting all of us. Nice work, team....I'm very proud of all of you. :thumbsup2

Hmmm...all this talk about triathelons....I have the opportunity to do a mini-tri totally for charity towards the end of June: 250m swim, 5K run and 12.5 mile ride. So it takes me just about a minute to do a length of the pool (and I can't do flip turns), 15 minutes to finish a mile AND I don't have a bike. So many people are telling me to go for it, but I don't know if I can. I presently have 2 rusted contraptions in my garage that my kids once used, but quite frankly other than cycling class I haven't been on a bike in decades! They haven't posted any pacing requirements but I'm sure I will be DLF if I qualify at all. Worst of all, there's no bling! If i'm going to do this I gotta have something to show for it. Just something else to think about.....

Shell: ooops, forgot to mention that RENT is one of my faves also!

Good Morning, Team Ohana!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. My intent is to rest from children today. I'm doing my long walk since I missed it yesterday, but I plan to only see the child I gave birth to. All the kids were great, very polite, well-behaved, etc. I just wasn't expecting the noise factor. I want to get on the TM with my nice quiet ipod and destress. ;)

Jeanne - I forgot to donate my miles for Lily-- I hope it's not too late. I posted on the other thread. I think the triathalon sounds like a great new challenge for you, if you want to do it. I know you can do anything you set your mind to!:thumbsup2

Shell -- It sounds like you had a blast seeing Rent! I'm so glad the weather didn't make your commute a nightmare. You ask alot of good questions about Lost. I thought Jack and Claire do not know their related, but I might have missed that. I think it has to be Claire's Aaron, because of his age. They probably got some sort of settlement because the crash was deemed pilot error, but that is a great point. I wonder what else we are going to find out about this flight? We know the found airplane doesn't have the right pilot...:confused3

Vanessa -- Have you read the latest Ender book set in the battle school? It's only about 100 pages, really a novella, and it came out in October. The title escapes me...but I think you would enjoy it. ::yes::

Christa -- I'm all about less chafing, too!:rotfl: Bodyglide is my friend...

Debra -- I am officially all out of parental patience. The love is bottomless, but I now need time to myself. I am an only child, and I find that I must have a certain amount of time by myself, or I get really cranky. Luckily, ds is an only too and has the same issue. Today we are each just doing our own thing (dh knows to leave us alone), and by this evening we will all want to come together and chat again. :upsidedow

Ok, so the Lost chat reminds me of something else I have to share -- did you know that the origin of the term red herring centers around fox hunts in England? During the Regency (that's the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th, for those of you who have not studied the ridiculous amount of history I have -- King George III was a bit batty after losing his favorite Colonies, and his son was appointed the Prince Regent and actually ran the Empire, such as it was -- it wasn't really much of an Empire yet, but I digress), if someone wanted to confuse the hounds, they would take a red herring and drag it along to create a false trail. The hounds would follow the smell of the herring, and of course, eventually find it. Early animal advocates would put out the false trails to save the hounds from the cruelty of the hunt. The red herrings were already dead, so I guess it wasn't overly cruel for them...So that's why we say a clue that leads us false is a red herring.

Corinna -- We also exercise in shifts if someone needs to leave the house. DS is 10, and we're not ready to leave him home alone yet. Supportive spouses are awesome, we are so lucky that so many of us have them!:thumbsup2

Jen -- You are a whirling dervish! I'm glad I don't have to keep up with you, 'cause I think I'd drop!:faint:

Everybody --yes, this includes you lurkers from other teams! -- You are doing a great job on the challenge! This is really motivating me to do more when I don't want to, and I thank you all for participating. It is just what I need!:goodvibes

Maria

M'Lisse and I are in the middle of a completed Disney visit (quick 2 day stopover) and a cruise, so both of us will be pretty light these two weeks.

For last week, I had 3 hours and 6 miles.

What? How dare you go on a cruise & not invite me?? :rotfl2: I hope you're both having a great time!!!

Christa: You're our local biking expert, so if I could bend your ear....If you get a chance, do you have any book suggestions for riding that you could pass on? DOOD and I were talking about how I need to strengthen my knee muscles & that biking is good for that. Right now, I'm a casual urban-commute rider (which means I don't need to go very far or fast) and the bike is wintering in the basement. I'm working out on a stationary bicycle--not ideal I know--and would like to pick up information on how to maximize that in prep for spring. (I also can't take my club's spinning classes due to current schedule conflicts.) I'm going to need to contend with hills & heavy urban traffic when I am outside, conditions which are still new to me.

Vanessa: Abs...you say challenged, I side with your own assessment of non-existent. We're in this together, then! I do so hope you get a racing partner for the cure, as I think it will be a great, friendly event.

Shell: I, too, love Rent. I've seen it 3x and currently have the music on my iPod.

Jeanne: Once again, thank YOU (and Jen) for being great leaders! I love this team, as well as my entire WISH team. Seriously, I was telling DOOD about how much camaraderie, how much support and good information I get from WISH. I don't think he needs it, but he's very happy I have found it. And the donations to Lily is just a tiny example of this dynamic. As for your mini-tri, I say "Do it, do it, do it!" I'll mail you some bling! :)

Maria: You DESERVE a break today (without McDonald's, of course). Isn't it wild how workouts really do become the safe, quiet haven for us, even if it's in a noisy gym. (Not sure if that's where your TM is, but I'm just saying...). And I could just kiss you for your tidbits on the red herring etymology--I love that kind of knowledge. :cool1:

As for me: I survived my all-day movie marathon, walking (limping) away with sore legs but happy to have had the experience. I worked out on Saturday in "preparation" for all that sitting, but nothing can really prepare you for that, KWIM? :confused3 And I worked out extra-long today, but couldn't take my yoga class (a substitute I won't work with). I'm feeling better but not looking forward to tomorrow. Tonight's Oscar show is a another story....

And it looks like I'll be signing up for our local Race for the cure as a walker. Not only does it look like there are local folks interested in walking with me, but my ILs have invited themselves for a visit that weekend. :crazy2: (I like them, but can't stand the "this is when we're coming" ethos. It's the norm in DOOD's family, and not worth fighting over, so I told DOOD that this has driven me into signing up for the race. :rotfl2:) To be fair, I also told him that they were welcome to sign up as walkers, too, and we could do it as a family. Now I'm afraid they will actually take me up on it. :scared1:

Losties: More potential spoilers......

I don't know that Jack knows about Claire/Aaron's connections with him, at least in terms of what we've been shown so far. But I don't rewatch the show, so I'm not 100% positive on that. I agree with Maria on the settlement, but I think that the notoriety might be where they were found--how far off course?--or that initial reports indicated no survivors possible. (The news reports with the plane.) Maybe the airline had to cop to "mixing up" the plane crashes, so that the Oceanic survivors weren't made part of a search & rescue op; that would be grounds for a HUGE suit. IDK, though, that it doesn't have to do with some other twist. DOOD and I have been talking about who's in the coffin. (I'm thinking Ben or Locke, who I now suspect to be one of the six. So if I'm thinking it, you just know it's wrong. :rotfl: )

Losties: I'm really interested in all these Lost theories and end games and whatnot SO if you are in the mood for reading something that could be insanely spoilerish and don't care about maybe having the end-game of the show ruined for you, I'm going to share a link of this guy/girl's (?) theory of just what the deal is. I should say it's this person's opinion, but now I try to fit what's going on in the show with this theory. This past week's one doesn't jive so well though, at least to me... the_timeline

Everyone else: :)Anyway, besides that Sundays are now insanely boring for me since I can't go out to run/walk and there's nothing good on tv, so I played some DDR today and so maybe what follows will inspire some of you to try playing DDR at some point (there's a machine at the Space Mountain gift shop unless they've taken it out since I've last been there!)

If you've never seen anyone play it, the basics of it is that you have a pad with 4 arrows (front, back, left, and right). Arrows scroll up on the screen and when they hit the top row is when you are supposed to step on the appropriate arrow. There's four levels (they have different names depending on the game system you are playing on) and the higher you go, the more steps there are, jumps, 1/16th steps, etc.

There's one mode called Groove Circuit on the Wii which is a bunch of mini-challenges. You have to beat 3 songs with some criteria (like getting A's on them, getting 25 or more combos) and then you get a challenge from the dance master which is usually a new song that once you beat, you unlock it and can play it whenever. Since NOVEMBER I've been stuck on this one level and the song is CRAZY and it's only the 2nd level. It's very intensive though and I haven't really focussed on beating it these days because of my knee.

Instead I've been playing Free Play mode but you can get certain things that give you the challenge song anyway. I got it today and actually taped it and put it on YouTube so you can watch just to see the insanity of the steps on this. I've gotten pretty good to where I only really screw up on the end. haha. To beat this song, you not only have to score higher than the dance master but get 3 or less Boo's (meaning miss 3 or less steps). When I first started this, I got like 90 something boo's. I'm now down to getting less than 10 and I've gotten 3 a few times but I can't beat the dance master. Without further ado, this is the song I've been stuck on: Super Samurai

I also managed to get challenged into the last song of the bunch to unlock (which is good, this means I only have 1 level after I beat the one I'm stuck on) and I taped that but you can see my reflection in the video playing and I don't want that on youtube so another time I'll put up that. That last song (Tokyo Evolved) is just really insane with steps. The arrows go by so so fast.

Hope everyone who's watching the Oscars enjoys them. I'm watching the red carpet parade right now...checking out all the fancy (or not so fancy dresses!).

Hello Ohana!

I had a decent LSR today, but really put the S in the LSR due to many, many patches of ice. Evidently it was kind of melty yesterday afternoon and all that melt froze into lots of frozen little rivers across the sidewalk. There were some good stretches, but there were lots of completely un-runable stretches as well. I was SO cold when I started out and actually thought about turning back to trade my fleece headband for a hat and my warm shirt for a jacket, but didn't do it and another 5 minutes in, I was super warm, even for the forced walk-breaks.

As I was running along, I kept thinking of something Christa wrote last week: "running at my happy pace." And I thought of something I've done a few times and have seen others do a few times around here as well: talking about pace and how slow one's own pace is.

I decided I need to stop being underwhelmed by my pace, especially in writing, because for one thing, it's a form of taking away credit for what I have done. For another, the numbers and where I place in a race really aren't as important to me right now as the fact that I'm able to do it and that i HAVE a "happy pace." Thanks, Christa, for that phrase - it is just the thing.

I also am considering this sub-30 5K. I am not, at this point, going to be able to achieve that goal at a happy pace. And the thought of really RACING a 5K, well, it sounds a lot less fun, but I suppose it may be a good experience. But I think what I REALLY want is for my "happy pace" get faster but still be "happy." I know it will probably happen with appropriate training and plenty of time.

Debra - I haven't seen the movie "Walk the Line" so I don't think I can say whether he does or doesn't or even if that would be a good thing. He doesn't tend to wear all black, either, for what that's worth. He has no interest in the races - just a non-competitive kind of guy. I always tell him that the races aren't about competition so much as participation and personal achievement (at least at our level!) but he's still just not interested.:confused3

I am excited for our group charity run plan. You're right that running in celebration or memory of someone makes it extra special - and one of the most amazing things about that race was seeing what everyone else wrote on their pink "celebration" or "memory" cards. I remember getting passed by a man wearing a sign "for all the victims" and another woman "running so her daughter wouldn't have to" and the women in the pink survivor shirts, some of whom were running in celebration of "myself."

Good luck with the IL dynamic and race for the cure weekend! Does your race have a separate start time for runners and walkers? I was surprised last year by how many walkers were doing the "run" but evidently the "walk" is really more of a "mob forwards" than a walk, so that may have something to do with it.

Diane - Way to get through that yoga class - it really can be very tough! That is so cool that you spied a Donald shirt and it helped you get through. You're right that it's not the most common to see someone in a marathon or half marathon shirt - As large as the races are, it really is a small percentage of the population that has the endurance to participate in one!

Shell, I can't believe I have missed the Rent phenomenon, and now it is closing. I think I had a toddler and no babysitter-hiring skills when the traveling production came through the twin cities years ago. I'm glad the weather didn't get in your way. We have DDR on the Wii - and that song looks insane. I'm afraid no one here is very accomplished yet - we can get an A occasionally on a basic level, but mostly it's just a lot of BOO's. Fun anyhow, though!

Maria - Kudos for getting through the slumber party. Boys in a group really can be NOISY. That is fascinating about the RED HERRING. I didn't know that! I am with you that this team challenge really is the extra nudge I needed to get things done. I have never covered so many miles in one month before, and I've never kept track of the minutes exercised before, either, so it is very inspiring!

Jeanne - thanks for organizing the miles for Lily - And the tri definitely sounds daunting to me - it seems like there are some logistical challenges you'd need to work out. However, DLF>>>DNS, so I think you should go for it if it sounds like something you'd feel good about doing.

Way to go, Team Ohana! We are still on top in the rankings for February. :cheer2:

Hey everyone

Life's been pretty rough the last couple weeks. I'm still training, probably the only thing keeping me together right now. I think we're on the right path to improvement, but will still have a rocky road ahead.

Debra...I'm registered for a 12K next month that helps a local charity. Will that work for your challenge? We don't have a Race for the Cure locally.
Oh...and the shorts with pockets thing...why don't they make girl shorts with real pockets? The best ones I have were Champion shorts from Target but they don't seem to sell that style anymore.

Maria...10yo birthday party?? You are HARDCORE!

Denny...hope you're enjoying your trip!

Jeanne...the tri sounds cool! We're still trying to decide if we can work out the local Muddy Buddy.

Yikes...can't believe the weekend is over already.

Hello Ohana!

....

I also am considering this sub-30 5K. I am not, at this point, going to be able to achieve that goal at a happy pace. And the thought of really RACING a 5K, well, it sounds a lot less fun, but I suppose it may be a good experience. But I think what I REALLY want is for my "happy pace" get faster but still be "happy." I know it will probably happen with appropriate training and plenty of time.
....... :cheer2:

In 2007 I decided to push myself for a faster 5K, partly due to ego and partly to beat my son. It took several tries, but I got it down to a 21:37.

Training for this was never "happy". It was a lot of hard running which I hate. I learned that I would rather run long and slow then try for speed.

Unless it is something that you are really committed to do....just keep running at your "happy pace" and enjoy the run. In the short and long run no one cared about my 21:37 except for me. Run happy and enjoy it.

Wow, Jim, that is FAST! I would seriously be happy at double your time! I have signed up for the Minnie which has a 15-minute pace requirement and I will be huffing and puffing just to maintain that. But what you say is true, nobody else really cares and as long as I get my medal and am not swept, I will be happy. :thumbsup2

Hello Ohana!

Glad the "Happy Pace" helped. Never belittle what you have accomplished. I run around a 24 min 5k and noone really cares...except me. That is NOT run at my happy pace. That is around a 7:40 MPM and my HP is around 8:40 (HM pace). If you are good with your pace, stay there. If you want to get faster....well, hate to say it, but....the only way to run faster is to run faster.:confused3 Also, I am used to running LONG miles...so knowing I "only" have 3.11 miles helps me go faster.

Jim - Your fast! WOW! I am just trying to break 24 min. I care!:woohoo:

Mel - Take it easy.

Debra - I really have no books. I tend to do things the hard way. 3 years ago, I had a clunker of a bike that I trained on. I saved and scraped up my money and bought a road bike 2 weeks b/4 my 1st tri and rode the road bike in the tri. I then increased my miles. Then I started riding with people who had been on bikes for a long time. I watched them then did the MS century with them. I still do not have clippless pedals...a control issue....so people tend to think I am a new biker. But I don't really care. I just do my thing. They learn after a while that even with my toe cages, I know how to ride.:rotfl:

Greetings from Team Ohana!

Seeing that our fearless leader, Lily, has been under the weather and unable to train on her own behalf, several members of Team Ohana have generously donated a portion of their hours/miles to her. Most of us just donated whatever we did on Monday, but a few that did not workout that day chose another session. Also, there are still a few people who have not yet reported their miles, so the total may increase. Please know that these miles/hours are a true gift and have not been included in our team's total. We gladly offer them to be placed in Lily's account:

15.99 miles, 5hours,54 min (5:54)

Sending best wishes for her speedy recovery from your Team Ohana cousins. :grouphug:

I'm happy to report that we have a revision to the miles for Lily: Adding another 5 miles and 2:10......gives you a total of 20.99 miles and 8:04 from Team Ohana. We are honored to do this for her.

Team Ohana back again with another and final revision:

We now have all our cousins accounted for and have generated an additional 1.5 hours and 3 more miles for Lily.

The grand total is 23.99 miles and 9:34 hours/minutes.

Have a great week, everyone!
I want you to know I truly appreciate your efforts in my name. You all exemplify WISH Team spirit. I thank you and will humbly try to make myself worthy of your efforts. I think though that I will never be truly worthy.

:grouphug:

Shortly after I posted this morning my internet went down, but I wanted to add a few comments.......

Maria: no worries....I saw your post on the other thread and adjusted your weekly total to reflect the miles and time for Lily.

Shell, Debra, Nancy and all the LOSTies: I think I tried to get into that show around 3 times and each time I ended up feeling totally lost myself. If you think it is worth it, I will rent the full series on DVD and watch it that way. I do have a question, though: What ever happened to the character Paolo?
He was the guy who played Carl in "Love Actually" and is a real hottie. In fact my kids all refer to him as Mom's boyfriend (yeah, in my dreams!) Anyway, he was on last season but he wasn't one of the original survivors and isn't on anymore. Do you know who I am talking about and what happened to him?

Lily: You are most welcome! We are happy to help in any way and continue to pray for your speedy and complete recovery.
