Teachers, would you like...

So my class gave me one of these on friday, and a few gift cards. . . Who was the poster on this one???

Anyway, I cried. a bunch. it was great! They each had completed 2 pages and the room mom also added in sections from the different events throughout the year. Then, they put a picture of me with my daughter at K registration (last week) in the hallway. That's all it took. I had to put it down. The 4th graders grow up so much throughout the year, and I was all emotional about that. Then to end it looking at my soon to be kindergartner. . . over the top.

But the kids were thrilled to see it impacted me. And I'll cherish it forever. Great idea. . .

I'm a room mom for my son's second grade class. This is his teacher's first year, and she has been WONDERFUL.

I'm thinking of doing a sort of scrapbook rolodex of messages from the kids that I saw in Family Fun magazine (not sure if I can post the link)

Debating whether to also collect for ONE gift card from the entire class ... or to ask people to get various gift cards on their own. Teachers, which you would prefer? One for $150 to the mall, for example, or a varied selection from coffee shops, bookstores, maybe clothing stores etc.

We live in Saratoga Springs NY; we have plenty of good shopping and eating in our area to choose from. :)

I have to say, I'll be one who disagrees with the scrapbook idea. It would be wasted on me. I'm not overly sentimental and I don't like a lot of clutter. I'd probably keep it for a year, and then throw it away. It drives me nuts when people don't buy teachers practical gifts. Either a supply store or a book store gift card are perfect. For me, it would be a wasted effort on your part.

I would love it! This is the first year I've gotten nothing during teacher appreciation week. I keep all the pics my kids make for me. I can't help myself! Do it!

Just thought I'd post the update...I did make a 6 X 6 scrapbook for two of my children's teachers (a friend did one for the third teacher). I had each child write a special message to the teacher and sign their name. I added a pic of each child to their page and decorated the page with ribbon, brads, etc. to dress it up. I included class group pics from events throughout the year and any pics that showcased the teachers themselves...I fully understand that most people want to see pics of themselves. ;) I had the teacher's b'day, field day, field trips, etc. I finished the books with pics that I felt showcased their unique personalities (one was a pic of the teacher with a child and the other was a pic of a huge drug awareness poster that the class had created and was that particular teacher's first "project" with the class) and wrote "They might not remember everything you taught them, but they will always remember how much you cared." I also included a story about how they had made a difference to our children. So it was not so much a scrapbook about the children as a scrapbook-style thank you for the teacher and how she had impacted each child this year. Anyway, the books were a HUGE hit! The teachers really seemed to love them--we all cried when they looked at their books. All three of these teachers have been wonderful and I hope the scrapbooks conveyed our gratitude for their dedication to our children.

As far as one big gift card or a variety, it really wouldn't matter to me. For my son's preschool class one mom collected several different cards and then made an arrangement of them (We made the scrapbooks too, big hit). Don't forget that movie gift cards are great too, especially if your child's teacher is a Disney fan. You can treat her to Pirates!
The bottom line is that as a teacher any recognition of my hard work is wonderful. I love personal things like scrapbooks, etc. I also love the dollar store figurines that came from students at the first school I taught at. It was a very low income school, and they were so proud to give them to me.

Thank you for saying that. My class decided we are going to all chip in for a digital camera (with a gift receipt, in case it doesn't have the exact features she likes), but it irks me when a parent will say "it's better to give one big gift than have her get a lot of junk." Let her decide what's junk! Two years ago my DD went to the dollar store with me and chose an item for her 3rd grade teacher. I put it in a gift bag, with some class photos, a candle and a gc to a very nice restaurant, btw. Mrs. F told my DD - of all this stuff I like the plushy flower best because I know *you* chose it for me.

Even if Mrs. F put that plushy flower in a garage sale two weeks later, it was a nice moment for DD and for me. And I'm hoping my DS will have Mrs. F next year. :goodvibes

I got a lovely scrapbook from my class at the end of the year before I took a year long maternity leave in June 2004. Each child has his/her own page with pictures and a message to the baby and me. I will always cherish this gift.

Years ago when I was finishing up my student teaching, my mentoring teacher and the class secretly made a memory book for me. Each page had a picture of the child, a favorite memory we shared, something they would never forget me for, and a piece of advice for my future classroom. I have it packed away in a footlocker with all my HS yearbooks and other memorablia that are priceless to me.

OT,but as a funny side note. Tim, one of the boys in that class now plays on DH's 21 & over baseball team. At last week's practice Tim asked DH if I was still teaching and DH said, "Yes. You know she still has that memory book you guys made for her." Tim asked if DH could bring it to the next game or xerox some pages. He wants to see what everybody looked like and wrote "way back then." It's only been 12 years!:scared1:

I would love it! I keep every card, note, etc. that every student has given me. When I was student teaching, the students and I made a similar scrapbook for my cooperating teacher. She cried, she loved it so much!
