I know getting a teaching job in MA or RI is very hard. I have heard that getting a teaching job in NC, FL or NJ is very easy. I am thinking about going back to school for elem. ed but I don't want to get out and not be able to get a job. I will be living and teaching in Indiana. Any ideas, or thoughts about the ability to get a job after graduating three years from now....

Thanks...

There is a shortage in most places in NC, BUT much of the shortage is secondary, not elementary. The hardest grade level to get a job in is K-3 and there are teachers in that area who cannot find a job. If you are open to somewhat older children, you might consider getting your certification in grades 4-9, which will qualify you to also teach middle school. Here, if you do middle school/high school math or science, you have a pretty much guaranteed job -- that's where the biggest shortage is.

bumping up for teachers getting out of school....
I have a degree in Hospitality so to teach math or science in the middle school level, late elem. i would need to get a bachelors in math or science first I think.

I would love to teach late elem, middle school english or reading...

Inner city schools have more of a shortage. But, basically, besided upper level math and science, there is a surplus around here.

I am hoping more than anyone can imagine that I can get a teaching job next year!!! I taught once before, but since there are no other jobs around here (unless you are a nurse), then I will be trying to get back into teaching. We even have too maany substitutes around here.....many with their MBA who can't find other jobs.

I think that there will be a need for teachers in Massachusetts in two or three years. We have a new retirement system and it will "kick in" in two years. I honestly think that there will be a large number of teachers that will take advantage of it. I know I am.............. want a first grade job?

Just from the Boston prespective. The average age of teachers here is way over 45 years of age. Our classes are way over crowded, because of budget cuts, which have eliminated many jobs. Things will have to change as they can not continue like this. I am not sure when or how long...I know I had friends who were laid off after 25 years here.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do. :)

In Alabama there is a surplus of teachers. One thing that is always needed though is Special Ed teachers. They tend to find jobs pretty easily.

Here is central PA there is a surplus. It is mainly small towns, nice class size, teachers tend to stick around, safe, good starting pay, about 2-3 hours from cities, three universities that put out education majors......so yes, jobs are very competitive.

BUT on the other hand, I just graduated in May and got a job in August in a great district about 20 minutes from home!!! I am very fortunate!! Go for your dreams!
