I say try the Wilson program also. My son has autism and is 9. We used the Edmark reading program for him, which is a sight word program. He also has aproxia so we used a lot of Phonics outside of the Edmark program When we realized that he understood Phonics and could read more than sight words we started using the Wilson program. It was a wonderful suggestion made by an ELA teacher with an autistic son. Both of us have had positive results.

Thank you! I feel like I finally have some direction as to what to do to help him. We have been floundering and struggling for years, and it is like a new door has just opened. HE is a good kid, and a hard worker. I am very confident he will improve as we improve on our methods of instruction for him.

Have you worked with the school to develop an IEP for him? If not, do that ASAP.

Thank you for the suggestions, I was looking at the Wilson program or an Orton-Gillingham program. I have applied to learn the Orton method in a very intensive, structured, supervised program, locally. It will be a big commitment in time, but I am very willing to do it.

I so appreciate hearing the success stories! Thank you! Blessings and good wishes to all of you who are struggling with dyslexia, autism, and other learning issues. This parenting thing is tough!

We are working on an IEP now, but the school currently does not have anyone certified in Orton or Wilson....a stumbling block, but I am hoping I will soon be an expert on it. They can provide some support and help with his classes, more time, better notes, adapted tests, etc. These are not a remedy (more of a bandaid) but also needed at this time.
