Another end of the year teacher vent. Let me preface this with: I do love my kids and can't wait to return to my room next year. This room has been very challenging, it's nothing like I expected, but I finally found my footing, and I'm so excited to have the summer to plan and really make things better next year.
However, I'm still dealing with some of the issues I've been posting about here before. I'm still having issues with the one para and was really frustrated today. I have a student who is on a lunch plan. He eats lunch with the para while the rest of the class is in the cafeteria. After lunch ,that para receives his break and this kid and one other have nap time (they're my youngest students.)
Today I was a para short, so instead of having the other para after lunch, I was by myself with the kids. Instead of laying the child down for his nap, he allowed the kid to be behind the para desks where no other kid is allowed without permission and where this kid would not be able to stay. So after I get the class settled in for their after lunch relaxation exercise, I went to take the kid to the nap area. He started getting worked up and grabbed a bunch of things to throw. I reached up and grabbed them from him, and before I realized what happened, he had his teeth on my arm- the worst bite I've had yet this year! Broke skin, is very swollen and sore, and you can spot it a mile away. He held on a for a good minute, constantly biting harder. I called over the radio, and when the behaviorist got there, he made a snide comment about how he doesn't know how we get bitten. Really? Like I just stick my arm in front of him and say chow down!
I thought we were finally past all this biting nonsense, and I'm irritated with the other personnel involved. If the para had done what he was supposed to, this kid would not have been in that area and the tantrum could have possibly been avoided altogether. I'll be really glad to get the summer break and be able to recharge before next year. Anybody else looking forward to break?
