Teachers.... need help!

Hello Teachers! I am graduating from college this spring with a bachelors in English. I am going to apply to substitute teach, but I was wondering how I can become a teacher without going back to school for four more years.

I graduated with a degree in history/government and was able to do a one year program called MIC (Master's with Initial Certification) at the University of Kentucky. I never took a single education class as an undergrad since I never, ever planned on being a teacher. They had similar programs available at the Univeristy of Louisville and at Western Kentucky University (I think) so maybe you could find something like that. I think my sister has looked into a program in Tennessee that is 1 1/2 or 2 years.

In our area you can teach math and sciences if you have a degree in that field without having a teaching degree or further education

But I also know if you have a previous degree they have fast track programs to get teaching certificate too

Basically in Louisiana you can be a teacher easy because the need is so great - of course the pay isn't

I know New Orleans area has the most need but next to nowhere to live...

It really depends on the state you wish to teach in...it's different everywhere.

In CA, where I was certified, your teaching credential usually only takes 1 year. I did a combined program, MA/Credential in 12 months. To sub, you only need a BA and to take a test.

As stated above, it's all about your state. You should be able to go to your state's department of education website and get specifics. Otherwise, go to a state college website. You may find something through there. Some states are experiencing a shortage and are making provisions for temporary certifications.
