Hi we are going to DC during school. I know not our first choice either but it is when my dh can get off. I have written an e-mail to all of our dd's teachers. She is in 7th grade and doing well. An A and B student who is well liked. I don't think the 6 days out will kill her. Can ya'll let me know what you think please? :cool1:

I expect her to keep up with her school work and am setting a time aside on vacation for her to do her work. Also she can do a special project for each of you. We are going to these places.

The Capitol- I have a special tour and we will be in the gallery thanks to Rep. John Mica.
The Library of Congress- Special tour arranged again by Rep. Mica.
The Holocaust museum I have our tickets already.
The Smithsonians Air and Space (may be of interest for Mr. T.) American History (Mr. Mulrooney and Mrs. Mittleman)
The National Gallery of Art
Hirshorn Sculpture Gardens
Hillwood Museum tickets bought it's the house of heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post.
Mt. Vernon
The Vietnam Wall, Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, World War 2 Memorial, and see the Washington Monument from the outside.
Ford's Theater
Peterson House where Lincoln died.
Koshland Science Museum tenative(Mr. T again)
The National Archives
Arlington Cemetary
The Supreme Court tenative trying for a special tour via Rep. Mica
and finally the National Cathedral. We are going to be there for the demonstration of the massive Pipe Organ which might interest Mr. Dauer.

We have 9 days and 8 nights. It sounds like alot but it is doable. Please let me know if you would like anything special done in her absence. Thanks for being great teachers.

I, for one, would be thrilled to get an email like that! Usually they come in the day they leave and ask for a weeks worth of work! Or better yet, the parents don't say anything and just take the child out of school. DC is a great trip and very educational. Have a great time!

Honestly, I'm not sure you need to be so detailed, though I don't think it's a bad thing if you are. You could just say "We'll be visitng a wide variety of the historical and educational sites in Washington DC, and hope to make this trip as meaningful as possible. We will be having our daughter keep a journal. Please let me know if there is something more you would like her to complete." or something to that effect...

But, I also think it's fine the way it is:)

(BTW, I teach 6's and 9's history, just so I have some credibility :) )

Thanks for the input. Bekkiz I thought the detail might enable the teachers an insight to projects. If they have been to DC they might know of something specific at the locations that they want her to pay attention to. Would make projects easier to complete and have when she returns. I do think I could do some tweeking though. Keep the ideas coming teachers thanks.

That is great that you plan on finding time to do her regularl homework. But why in the world do you feel your DD should have to do an extra project for each teacher because she is going on vacation, or fill in a journal while she is gone?

Personally, I wouldn't make the offer to her teachers for any additional work, other than the schoolwork that needs to be done.

In our school district they do an entire year of study on WW2 and the Holocaust. It will be next year. I know my daughter is capable of this. I want to challenge her. I also figured that the teachers know her and know this is a great way to learn something in DC and not just walk around and gape. KWIM. Hope that makes sense.

sounds like a great trip to me! my only suggestion would be to make sure to separate alot to a lot. that used to make my teachers cringe when I was a kid.
