Teacher Vent

Yes he would have.

Thanks for the answer. I do have to say in MY opinion that's sad that it ONLY matters if it's graded. I can say as a teacher I never wanted more work for myself by sending out nonsense assignments but hey......maybe this youngster has nothing better to do *like have a life* and she was wrong. :teacher:

Well, that is new to me. I've been teaching 16 years and I have never felt like I needed to write WILL BE GRADED across the top of it. I will have to start adding this to papers;)

Also, I started teaching when I graduated college--age 23. The state of KY certified me to teach at that age.

what is a 504?

op seems your dd dropped the ball - had a week to complete and failed. My dd is in K an NO WHERE on her homework does it say anything about a "grade" I always took that as a given - if a teacher sends home work - don't you think that it is to be done and turned in?

Best post in this thread. I am in disbelief that parents actually treat teachers this way.

ITA...the part about the teacher only being 25 really bothered me. We have a young teacher in our school who is probably one of the best teachers I have ever worked with. I think what bothers me the most about the OP's original post is how she wanted to be invisible to see the teacher's reaction to her husband's nasty email (OP, you can change the story all you want, but we all believe it was a nasty email). The worst part: the popcorn:: icon at the end of the post.

Sad to think that the only reason teachers had to start giving grades for having parental consent forms signed was because so many parents had exactly this attitude.

Must suck for both the teachers and the kids.

A 504 is an educational plan for students who need special needs met like the dd of the OP who needs things written down and not oral as in assignments, instructions etc. 504's give extra time for tests if needed, less homework, easier assignments in a given area etc. It's a huge help for students who need them but in MY experience it's sometimes been abused by parents and students as an "excuse" for the student not performing to the best of their ability.

I think I have to agree with everyone else. A ball was dropped. Whether or not a form said it would be graded-it was asked to be done by a date and it wasn't done. If your DH knew it was asked to be done, he should have worked with your DD to have it done by the due date. I think you're trying to look for sympathy for your cause, but clearly in this situation, the teacher isn't at fault.

And yes, I have an issue with new teachers. DD first grade teacher was the worst teacher in the entire world!! OMG..she taught them NOTHING, no homework..it may as well have been glorified kindergarten!! My dd had an entire year wasted... And yes, every parent complained about it. We complained so much that the next year we heard she did an about face and gave too much homework. Thankfully her teacher in 2nd grade was awesome!! She retired after that year and had lots of experience and helped us work with DD. We have had great handpicked teachers for DD since 2nd grade. Teachers that were able to handle DD medical issues which are the basis for her 504.

But yes, there aer experienced teachers that are not that great. DD7 has one this year. She is nice..but DS should not have been placed in her class. She doesnt have the necessary skills to help him. His teacher last year, adn her asst, were so amazing. OMG this women was the best first grade teacher ...teacher in general I have ever come across. She got him writing and doing eveything....it was wonderful. This year all we get is well DS isn't doing this, he wont do that. We have suggested several times to speak to his teacher from last year, since he did all these things for her. It is driving us nuts..it is.

And just for the record..we are very pro teacher...we don't blame unless there is blame. MIL is very active with our kids and their education. She is a retired special ed teacher from NYC..and has dealt with it all in NY, and dealt with it here in NJ with her kids..so she is helping us. She has been very disappointed over the years with how the shcool system is dealing with the 504 and IEP's of our kids. It is very frustrating. DD best friends parents had to get a lawyer to get her DD the education she was entitled too. It's sad when all the teachers and couneslors agree that her dd's needs would not/could not be met..but they still denied her. Why should it take an attorney for a child to get the best education for them??

If we had the funds, DD and DS would be in a private school. Private schools here run as much as colleges!!

The OP came in here wanting us all to agree with her. We obviously do not so she is changing her story. The fact is that she, her DH and DD are wrong. WHat's worse is it seems that she and/or her DH is very confrontational towards teachers.

Coming from a family of teachers this really hits home because my wife goes through this all the time. People need to take responsibility for their actions instead of trying to blame others for their mistakes.

I know. Kids get graded to have things turned back in by a specific date because their parents couldn't be bothered to do so before. Thats sad.

Well my dh's priorties was the work his clients needed to get done. As he is self employed, that means keeping a roof over his head. He gets no paid sick days or vacation days. If he takes an hour off for a doctors appt, that's an hour he doesnt' get paid. A signed form for looking at a website?? Nope...i don't blame him.

Wow, I guess I was a baby when I started teaching at 22:rotfl: . Sorry op, but dh was at fault here. No way to blame the teacher for this one! And yes, I give grades for consent forms, because that is the only way I'll ever get most of them back.

what is a 504?

A 504 guarantees that no one with a disability can be excluded from participating in federally funded programs/public schools. A 504 plan lays out the modifications and accommodations that will be needed for the student to have the same opportunities as their peers. It is supposed to level the playing field. It can include things like extra time for tests, having directions given in more than one way, extra sets of books (one for home/one for school) etc.

I have a student right now who gets 1/2 assignments with his 504. If I give the class 10 math problems, I need to pick out 5 for him to do. The same thing with homework.

That doesn't seem like the case. It seems as if you are only blaming the teacher for something that was entirely your fault. And to be honest, I have a difficult time believing you are proteacher.

Sorry, you dropped the ball. I'd just apologize and move on. No need for drama, especially if it's not going to hurt her grade. 7th grade is hard enough (traumatic!) without mom and dad making waves and drawing attention to a 13 year old kid. They hate that because everything's all about them.

I completely agree with you on this.

Well you shouldn't blame the teacher for it either. You DH's priorities weren't with the assignment. You stated that.

How long was this website viewing/approval/signing thing supposed to take?

Yes, but...

Yes, but...

Yes, but...

Sorry, OP, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that no one's taking your "side," no matter how many ways you try to justify your or DH's actions. He should have looked at the site or passed it on to you.

Yet you are blaming this teacher for giving your daughter a zero for something that was not completed...
