Here in Newport News Virginia:
Abigail Zwerner won her case against the school system ( and assist principal who sucked) . She was awarded 10 million instead of 40.
So happy for her!

Hopefully? Presumably? I'm not sure, one article I read didn't mention anything about it.

Parker has also been charged with eight counts of felony child abuse with disregard for life in connection with the shooting -- one count for each bullet that was in the gun, according to the Newport News Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. A trial on the criminal charges is scheduled to start this month.

I wondered about this too so I did a little digging-

initially the district tried to get the case dismissed claiming it was covered under worman's compensation but the judge ruled that being shot by a student was not an expected occupational hazard which allowed this case to proceed as a civil trial (good on you judge).

while no insurer or risk-pool has been named in court filings, local coverage and legal experts note that the school division participates in a state-administered risk pool that provides liability protection for public entities.

sounds like unless the amount is thrown out on appeal that there should be funds available.

I believe the assistant principal was covered under an umbrella policy, issued either by the school district or the teachers union as part of her employment. I can’t remember the specifics. I read it in one of the articles.
