Teacher Shot By 6 year old student Wins Case

This was the Civil case, right? I understand the child's mother served a bit of time for neglect & drug charges but it already out.

the asst. principal now faces her OWN charges and could serve time-

Parker has also been charged with eight counts of felony child abuse with disregard for life in connection with the shooting -- one count for each bullet that was in the gun, according to the Newport News Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. A trial on the criminal charges is scheduled to start this month.

I’m curious where the $10 million comes from. The school district budget? Their liability insurance payout?

I wondered about this too so I did a little digging-

initially the district tried to get the case dismissed claiming it was covered under worman's compensation but the judge ruled that being shot by a student was not an expected occupational hazard which allowed this case to proceed as a civil trial (good on you judge:thumbsup2).

while no insurer or risk-pool has been named in court filings, local coverage and legal experts note that the school division participates in a state-administered risk pool that provides liability protection for public entities.

sounds like unless the amount is thrown out on appeal that there should be funds available.

I believe the assistant principal was covered under an umbrella policy, issued either by the school district or the teachers union as part of her employment. I can’t remember the specifics. I read it in one of the articles.
