Most teachers would loss their jobs if they decided to take a vacation during school days, as apposed to parents who have kids and take them out of school for a vacation. It makes it a little harder on a teachers family to plan vacations.
Parents just yank there kids out of school whenever they want? That’s pretty poor parenting if they do. My parents never did that and wouldn’t ever plan to do that with my kids.

my point stands, as most parents with school age kids wouldn’t just take kids out of school for a week and go at breaks same as teachers. At least around here.

We pulled our kid out for a few days when she was little - first and second grade, if I recall.

Since then we have stuck to spring break - ours is not tied to Easter so it is usually not too bad.

Teachers are definitely more restricted on travel times than most people.

You may have noticed the parks are full of kids literally any day of the year you go? So yes there are plenty of kids who miss some school to go on vacation. We did it several times, after clearing it with the school and making arrangements for school work to be done early or caught up after, Our son made it through school just fine, despite our poor parenting.

In Canada there is literally zero penalty for doing this. Students sometimes go overseas for 1-2 months for wedding celebrations. High school students even, and teachers are to provide work and instructions.

In Ontario we can pay school boards ($250 per day) for two personal days but they cannot be attached to a long weekend or before a holiday.

If we are sick in the days leading up to a holiday period we must provide a sick note from the *exact* day (so you must haul your sick self to the clinic & pay for a dr’s note)- if the note is dated the day after you are charged a personal day and will not be reimbursed for the cost of the note. So yeah 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m a teacher and at the moment we are travelling in July due to my sons university course. Once it is just me and my hubby my plan is to go only in the October holidays

Yup, when I wasn't working we did it almost every year of elementary school. Now I'm a teacher again, and if I have a longer break than my kids (Easter) we take them out a day early or so. Already took DD out for a day for the 50th and will take her out an extra day beg Easter too. She's taking HS classes in 8th grade and her grades are all 95+.
Flights are cheaper so it works better. Feb break is our favorite but we'll go in August too.

Why do teachers do that? Its not a teacher schedule, its an anyone with kids in school schedule, parents of school age kids are locked into the same schedule too basically.

Sorry not harping on you hhisc16, but see this posted around often enough about teachers complaining about it, it aint just yall ya know?

We are taking dvc on spring break in March (6-12). Plan is to do Disney on spring break (ours is early march so too cold for beach) and to go to the beach (destin, fl) on fall break (just did our first fall break there earlier this month, was fantastic)
Understand as a parent.
Students are scheduled for 180 days a year, but allowed 10 "sick" days. (My brother called them "vacation" days.)
Teacher contracts are 190-195 days in my public school district.
As a public school teacher, I am allowed only 2 personal days a year.
(My personal days cannot be taken on a Monday or Friday or the day before/after a holiday.)

Yeah the price inflation for flights and hotel rooms during April(Easter) Vacations is just crazy, February Flights are only slightly cheaper. When Easter falls on our April Vacation we go in February instead.

In January 2022 we are taking our kids out of elementary school for the first time ever, because we having been to WDW since April of 2019 and feel a break from Covid and all the other stuff is warranted. If they were in high school it would be a different matter, and we probably won't be taking them out.

I'm not sure I'm in love w/ the idea of Disney in summer... looks miserable.
It’ hot….and ponchos in the rain sure don’t help that….and crowded, but it’s not THAT miserable! Yeah, I know, qualifying with ‘THAT’ means it’s a little miserable ….but it’s still fun. As much as we say we don’t really like it we always do it!

As others have pointed out….while teachers are on the same schedule as kids they definitely don’t have the same flexibility, in terms of being able to go during the school year. Parents can pull kids out of school and go any time they want, if they are so inclined, and teachers can’t. As I always say, unless you are a teacher or live with one you really don’t know what it’s like to be a teacher!

And it's not like you can just wait around for the cool weather in Orlando...There's just "miserably hot" and "not quite as hot" haha The old joke is that there are 2 seasons in Orando: January and summer. An exaggeration but not by much :)

I was pulled out in 4th grade and there are many steps. Also truthfully it was worth it. Granted I was a kid but my parents have no regrets and truthfully looking back I don’t either.

I actually want to homeschool my kids not because of what it taught or risk of getting sick (I’d also have them do as manyacrivities as possible to make sure they can make friends and interact with others) but because if I want to be able to take my kid anywhere I can and I will be able to have them complete it beforehand or so that they have a very easy amount of work on vacation. I personally don’t think it’s fair that kids and parents of those kids who have to take vacations when they can have to jump through a lot of hoops. Especially after this pandemic when virtual learning is becoming more of an option.

I hear you….but some do that, yes. Not that it’s something we really ever did (when my wife was on maternity leaves) but parents can, and do, do that. In that regard, non-teacher parents do have more options than teachers.

This is the sad reality. I do feel bad for teacher and admin/school job parents because they don’t have a lot of options

Ahhh….but someone will surely pipe in and point out that teachers “only work 9 months out of the year” (as if ), and they have lots of vacations and snow days, and, and….

I mean, I know most jobs are hard, but most non-teachers don’t really have much of an idea of what it’s really like to be a teacher.

My wife is a teacher. We book spring break, July and August. So within the school holiday schedule. We sometimes book in early December if she can get an updaid leave granted -- or sometimes it's just a Daddy Daughter Disney vacation ;)

Here I'll do it.

Id love to have a job where I get 2 months off in the summer, 2 weeks every christmas (vs hoping I can get it), a week off for thanksgiving (vs hoping I can get it) a week in october and a week in march.

Teachers just like to complain ;)
You forgot the :duck:.

I couldn’t be a teacher. One, I don’t have the patience. Two, I like to be able to go to the bathroom when I have to, you know, go to the bathroom. Three, considering all the hours they actually work (including nights, weekends and, yes, summers)…..teaching’s got to be one of the lowest paying hourly wage jobs of any job, anywhere.

Plenty of districts are hiring. Shouldn't be that hard for someone like you!

(Yes, I am needling you for being a Chelsea supporter.)

Exactly. I’m a sub so I have a little less structure but it is definitely difficult and I see it firsthand.
