Ok, I have a question for you, but I'm not going to tell you my opinion on it (right now anyway). I'm just curious what you guys think.

A parent gives their child's preschool teachers an end of the year gift. The gift is a gift certificate, for an independent mini-market, and can be used towards gas or the deli. The parents own the mini market. Basically, no monetary output from the parents, with a possibility that more money will go into their business from the recipient of the gift certificate.

What is your opinion on this scenario? Again, I'm just curious....

I don't see any issue here :confused3
When someone gives you a gift you graciously say "thank you".

The monetary output from the parents is the cost of the items purchased by the teachers, up to the amount of the gift card. Maybe the parents are hoping the teachers will spend more in their mini-market than the amount of the gift card, but it still costs the parents the amount of the card.

As long as the school as no policy against such gifts, whats the problem?

Any chance I can get free gas I really don't care where it is from! LOL

I sell Stampin' Up! and when I have had a teacher who really likes the stuff I give them a gift certificate. I have also made and packaged up sets of cards for gifts and they have always been appreciated. When I was teaching I had a student and thei family owned a restaurant and I got a GC from them-and I was delighted because their fod was delicious!!!:thumbsup2

In the end someone is paying for something-even if you own the store the owners are paying for the gas or the merchandise before they sell it.

As long as it's a gift certificate and not a percent off of a purchase, it's fine-- as long as it isn't out of the way for the teacher and as long as all the parents aren't chipping in (and it's benefitting the one choosing the gift card). Lots of stipulations.

Ok, maybe it is time for my opinion...;)

I'm actually fine with it, and I am of the "be gracious" camp. In no way am I knocking free gas!

I was asking because I've read threads regarding "is this tacky?" and I was wondering if the DIS folks would say that this gift fell into that category. Just doing a little "research"...LOL

I think I would appreciate that more than some little trinket a parent bought at a 90% off sale after Xmas (in an attempt to comapre it to something that was a nominal expense to the giver).

I'd LOVE IT!!! Free gas? Bring it on!

No way could it be tacky. If someone would be offended by it, then they can just pass it along to someone who might appreciate it.

A great gift that saves the teacher money. Who cares if the parents own the station?

If I were a teacher and knew one of my parents owned a gas station, I would be HOPING for a gas gift card if they gave me a gift :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

We had a family in our old school that owned a Subway, they often donated Subway food for various events, etc. We all loved it.

Perfectly fine. The parents/business are eating the cost of the $25 or however much the gift card is worth. Like saying "come to our store and take stuff for free."

I think it is a nice idea.

Me too.

Who doesn't like a gas card. Oh and don't think for a second that its no monetary outlay by the owner. There is an extremely small profit margin on gas right now and possibly for some stations none at all.

I was THRILLED when I got an end-of-year thank you gift certificate to my student's family's ice cream stand. Who doesn't love a free ice cream sundae? It wasn't a huge monetary value card, but I was delighted to be thought of, and my student was pleased when I came in to use it. :) I think giving a gift certificate to a small store, whether the parents owned it or not, is a great gift. It supports local business.

The only Christmas present I got this year from a student was a pair of earrings. His mom makes jewelry to sell at craft fairs, and he gave each of us a pair (3 female teachers). We were touched, and he picked out the beads for them himself, so that makes it more special. I don't care that it wasn't an expensive gift. The fact that the family thought I was special enough to get handmade earrings just makes me all melty inside!
