My DD is adamant that it's not 'cool' to buy teachers gifts and that it's viewed as sucking up.

1) If you're a middle school teacher, do you receive gifts?

2) If you have middle school children, do you purchase gifts for their teachers?

3) When they have multiple teachers (I'd be buying for ~10 people), what do you typically purchase?

Thanks! :wizard:

No gifts are given to teachers at DS' middle school (and he attends an affluent private school where most families can afford gifts so it's not a cost thing). He also says it's "not cool". I checked with a friend whose sons are a couple of years older than DS and she confirmed "no gifts in middle school". It's a big change from our elementary school where families give gifts to the classroom teachers, the PE, art, music, etc. teachers, the policeman who patrols the school, the janitor,.... :santa:

This is my DD's first year in middle school so we don't know if it's cool or not. She's in 7th grade and has 6 teachers.

She wants to give them gifts.

Since there are so many teachers this year we need to cut back on the dollar amount. We are giving each teacher a $5 gift card to Dunkin Donuts.

Okay, good to know. One more thing marked off my to-do list. I can be down with that! :thumbsup2

My oldest who is now a senior would give gifts to teachers that she loved.

My youngest who is now a 6th grader will probably not give any gifts. I don't know, I have not asked her.

No, it's not usually done. The kids do love to give cards though! Maybe you could buy her a box to give to teachers and friends.

I get the middle school teachers $10 McDonald's GC. Yes, it's "uncool" to give gifts at this age but so is everything else. Why would I forget about someone who's with my kid everyday just b/c my kid says it's uncool? There is a lot of them so it's really just a little something for them.

My 8th grade son specifically asked if we could get his teachers a gift this year. His reasoning is he really likes all of them. This is the first time in Middle School we have done so. We got Panera gift cards.

Well crap, DS is in 6th grade this year and IS going to be an uncool suck up. I sell Thirty-One products and bought each teacher a lunch tote in Sept (got them 40% off), they have been monogrammed so he will be giving them. DS doesn't let things like that bother him though, he really likes all of his teachers too.

We've done it twice....in the 5 years we've been in Middle School. It is uncool but I found this great deal on highlighters and gave each teacher a cup o' highlighters. I've had 2 of them ask if I was going to do that again:rotfl2: . The other time was a "just because" gift of a bag of chocolate...which I also sent to high school with the oldest for her fav. teachers.

If your child doesn't want to give gifts then don't.

We are crazy marathon bakers here, and usually bake before school is out for Christmas break. My oldest took plates, boxes, bags, etc. of cookies and candies to the teachers she liked all the way through school. I think there was one year she felt a little awkward about the coolness factor, so she just took a tub full "for the class" and put it on the teacher's desk (he took home what was left after class). Nobody called her a suckup, because they were too excited about treats.
